The rule is when the punt returner does this he can’t advance the ball if or when he gains possession it becomes dead at that spot.
That metric has been quietly thrown out the day after Barta retired, no way Iowa uses that to term Junior now. IMO, KF retires at end of next season and new HC doesn’t retain Brian. This allows KF to fade away with grace and the yet to be named AD avoids being referred to a hatchet man from the get go.

I read the rule and I do see technically how the refs made the call. That being said, if that call was made on us, we’d be crying BS as well (cue the NU / TX 1 sec game). Signaling for a fair catch when he was not in a position to catch and every MN player trying to hit and tackle him - nobody thought he called a fair catch.
Like I said - I’m glad the refs made the call because it really helps the Huskers, but I just don’t believe our fan base would be so agreeable if the same call on us.

Agree, As an Iowa fan I think he is right, Total B.S. from Iowa fans, I expect Iowa to be fined by the Big offices. I believe Iowa should have been penalized 15 yards for the fans unsportsmanlike behavior, That said I believe P.J. should have been penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike behavior for chasing various officials all over the field of play and it would have been offsetting penalties.
12 yards in second half is embarrassing with no words. They can say the punt return call back cost them the game. But ultimately it goes back to their offense . Every . Time. But KF will stand up there and talk about the wins. So long as they win 7 games BF isn’t going anywhere - which is good news for all of their opponents.

I have no doubt an idiotic nonsense rule was technically applied "correctly" and I look forward to learning more each week about esoteric rules that have never been called before except by Big 10 refs when it decides the outcome of the game

No, if you are going to field the punt you can point, but can't wave your hands. If you do, regardless of whether you hands went above your head, once you field the punt the play is dead just as if you called a fair catch. It's not a penalty, so it's reviewable. The only difference appears to be that with an invalid fair catch signal the kicking team will not get penalized for tackling the player fielding the kick.
Hand has to be over the head for a legal fair catch. An illegal fair catch results in a dead ball once fielded and no penalty for tackling the receiver.
