Playing our first game on the road against conference opponents? How about we play a tuneup game against a team we should beat and work out the kinks a bit.

Agree somewhat, but we’ve been spoon-fed this line of we’re close, it’s coming, just wait… for years on end now.

You’re likely to get some pretty honest opinions this year (warranted or not), regardless of it being a new coach, new players, etc.—I’d say the gravy train is on the clock in terms of fan loyalty and where they’ll decide to best allocate their time and money going forward. Not sure they’ll hang on for another 2-3 year ‘it’s coming down the pike’ message.

Is “the juice still worth the squeeze?”, I guess we’ll find out in the weeks to come.

I'd rather know up front where we stand, rather than pussyfoot around with some cupcakes.
It's not like we scheduled Bama to start the season. It was the freaking Gophers.

I agree. It's not that we should shy away from good opponents but when you are rebuilding it's good to get an easy win or two before tackling more serious competition.

I'd rather play Bama. If you lose, well that is expected. You have gotten a measure of where you need to get to. You probably build some confidence even if you get smoked. If you win, well, that's just about as good as it gets.

dont think anyone would build confidence getting smoked by alabama week one.. and dont think sims would still be walking unassisted

I agree somewhat but how about we get one of these games at home?

It’s half our fault because we agreed to play in Dublin against Illinois and then Covid hit that was canceled and again we played Illinois because it was canceled again so we play them week0

So what do we ask Northwestern to play over in Ireland again…

B1G knew years in advance we had Colorado schedule for September 9 so what does the conference do they schedule Minnesota for Sept 2 and the game gets moved to August 31..

our beloved conference, which allows our fans to pound their chests about media dollars and delude themselves into thinking money will make us more competitive, schedules these games

Seems like ever since we joined the Big 10, the scheduling has worked against Nebraska-- making everything more difficult. But yes, playing against a physical team on the road that knows it's system inside and out is a horrible matchup for Rhule's team on the first game out.

It's a positive that the team looked as good as it did. Take away half the turnovers and stupid avoidable penalties and it's a totally different result.

Minnesota had to play their first game against a conference opponent too. That team is not good. This should’ve been a tuneup.

I have no problem playing a solid/decent P5 conference opponent week one. Like you said, it wasn’t a top 10 team, it was fvcking Minnesota. But what I do have a problem with, is having 2 back to back road games against P5 competition to start the season, with a new coach.

I can’t think of a better way to **** on our home opener than going 0-2. Sure the place will be “mostly sold out” but the vibe won’t be the same…

Unfortunately, NU is so bad there are very few teams in college football that would be considered “tune-up” games for the Huskers. Does Georgia Southern ring a bell? That model has come and gone. I don’t like it but it is what it is.

We could, were it not for the fact that it was the SAME bad COACHING we have seen for the pat 20 years. Same as it ever was. Making Frosty coaching mistakes in game 1 is not a positive sign.

It's our partially our fault. No one wants to watch MN play Illinois or Purdue in the opener. And everyone knows Nebraska fans will tune in and casual cfb fans will have a mild interest in NU. And the Big 10 knows we won't compete for championships because we always find ways to lose.

So we are the perfect storm. Everyone gets to use a bad team that still gets good ratings.

Bill Snider used that for a tuneup for the big 8/12 let your players get some confidence by playing several cupcakes! This crap about playing a conference game right out of the gate isn’t good for the conference. Who ever looses is behind the eightball so 1/3 of your conference teams have one loss after the first game. Not to smart

We actually had the lead in all 3 of these August games. All were winnable until we went all "Nebraska" on them.

But I have to say I agree with the overall sentiment...NU could have benefitted from a tune up game, this year especially.
