Agree. Terrific coach and good guy. I got to know him when he played for the Colts. In my humble opinion, he is destined to do great things.
The question is why wasn’t he hired as a dc by someone? Personally I thought he would end up in the NFL.
Yeah didn't he turn down NFL coordinator jobs last year? Weird that he would only get hired as an analyst at a crappy program. If he was going to take an analyst job, you'd think he'd go to Alabama or Ohio State.
That blows. I was looking forward to not having to deal with him for a while.

He’s got a $1M buyout from Wisconsin that gets nullified if he takes a FBS or NFL coaching job this year. Hence, he’s an analyst this year. He will be back in a coaching role next year, almost certainly as a DC somewhere
A million dollar buyout is chump change these days to hire a DC for a P5 program.
Don't know if that dude is married or not BUT this sounds like one of those "I will just wait a year, maybe two, until I find the right job, it will be nice to stay home with you" things.

I guess with his buyout he has the luxury of being picky with what job he takes.
For starters, Wisconsin is paying him $1 million this season for doing nothing. If he takes a DC job and works 80 hours a week, he'll probably still be making the same amount of money as he would taking the year off. Some coaches have used that time to observe other coaches, gain some experiences that make you a better coach or just a better looking candidate.
The second reason is maybe he wasn't interested in taking another DC job. At 40, it's just the right time to become a head coach and with the million dollar buyout, he can afford to be very selective. I guess this analyst position means that he stays involved in the game and works fewer hours with a coach he respects.
It would be odd IMO for a Major program to hire an analyst to be their head coach. I suspect he didn’t get the offers he thought he was going to get. Perhaps we’ve over valued his expertise.
That's a good point. I wonder if there's more to the story with Leonhard- like how did he handle the interim coach situation? Did he politic behind the scenes or not exit gracefully? I really don't know. He was perceived as the guy Wisconsin fired their HC early in the season in order to keep. Was that totally wrong?
He’s married with kids I believe, has like a 30 acre acreage outside of Madison I seen on a b10 show last year. Something might be brewing for him at Illinois

This could be "coach in waiting" type thing but Brett said today that Jim would basically only work like 4 days a week so he could be home with his family on the weekends...so it really might be just a guy who wants out of the house.
Interesting, maybe he just wants to slay poon during the week when the wife is home.
