Wish they’d stop by my house. Friggin crabgrass
If you do your own fertilizer and weed care, this is what I did for years and loved the results.

In the fall over seed with Turf Type Tall Fescue and apply starter fertilizer. In the spring fertilize again with starter fertilizer; this is high in potassium fir strong deep roots and enough nitrogen for the green color. Buy some Weed be Gone and spray it in the spring to get on top dandelions and clover then during summer spot spray as they reappear. As the crab grass pokes its head up, cut it out and spray with weed be gone.

Only fertilize twice a year with starter fertilizer and as the fescue smothers out your old lawn it becomes stronger and requires less water. The fescue will also smother out the crab grass and the Weed be Gone takes care of the rest.

This works and the results will blow you away and you will save tons of frustration over thr multi step programs that don't work. I had a landscape company for over 25 years.

Do you over seed only in the fall?

Any recommendation for fertilizer brand? I followed the instructions to a 'T' with the Scotts on my tall fescue and got bad fertilizer burn the last couple times.

The only thing I don't like about fescue is when I get those clumpy spots with broader/coarser blades.

Can you avoid those?

If you are in Omaha, where do you buy your grass seed in bulk? I need to over seed about an acre and a half with fescue.

A lot of married doooodes posting about lawn card ****...love it!
My wife doesn’t care one iota about the lawn

I keep it pristine as a shot over the bow of my neighbors

Everyone driving down the street knows exactly which houses contain winners, and, conversely, losers

It’s a matter of personal pride. Appearances are everything in life, despite what the losers/havenots try to tell everyone

My grass is dead as well as any dryland crops here. Anything not irrigated and green is a weed

Gotta disagree with you kong. In my world, its root hog or die. I don't water, fertilize or give a crap as long as my neighbor to the west mows and weed eats my yard every week. (I pay him).

In the winter, my neighbor to the east keeps my snowthrower in his garage, when it snows, he does his drive and sidewalk, then does our drive and sidewalk. Works for me, Living the dream here.

I view the yard the same way as I view people who drive expensive cars. They pull up to a stop sign in a car they can't afford, to try to impress people they don't even know.

Appearances don't mean ****. I respect your opinion, I just don't agree.

That's what makes the world go 'round, right?

I use a brand called Flagship 24-0-6, once in early Spring (when soil temps get close to that 50 degree mark), then Freedom 17-7-6, 4-6 weeks later, then Milorganite around Memorial day, July 4th and then again around Labor Day and aerate and over seed with tall Fescue blends in Fall and sometime late September to mid October another application of Flagship. I order it through Yard Mastery. Some guys love Milorganite and that is the only product they use the whole season. It is a great product.

You can also get Prodiamine or Dithiopyr pre-emergent herbicides with Yard Mastery. They have good guidelines as to what settings are needed for different spreaders. I hand weed as I mow but I also sometimes use Ortho Weed killer product as well.

Really happy with the results the past couple years.

In the car example it means that it’s not about the car being nice but rather you keep it clean and well-maintained regardless if it’s a crap box or a Bentley. If you live in a crappy house, you keep it clean, yard picked up and mowed. It’s personal pride in your things which reflects in other areas of your life too.

(I like the Dave Ramsey-ism by the way 😁 )

I’d suggest going to the Grass Pad..

One key having a nice yard is having irrigation system..

Anything worse than renter not taking care of his yard is home owner who is to lazy to spend the money or maintain his yard…😡
If some home owner can‘t do it than he should hire a lawn service to do it..

I work with a guy and he was talking about his lawn and his neighbor, I guess the guy annoys him a bit and he said "I always mow my lawn a bit short than his and keep it greener, just to piss him off" hahaha

I feel like the price of mowing a lawn has been the same forever.

Kids do it for 20...
Lawn service does it for 40...

Have those prices changed at all in the last 30 years???

Depends on how big your yard is, my price I pay is $50.

scarlet, don't agree with this either. For one thing, I've owned my home since 1991, and my home is plenty nice. I'm not a lazy guy, I could do yardwork, if I wanted to, but it actually helps both my neighbors. One financially, the other, so he doesn't have to invest in a nice snowthrower. As far as I'm concerned, it's a win-win for all 3 of us. I choose not to do lawnwork.

Unless you live in a HOA, its nobody's business how your yard looks as long as its mowed on a regular basis. You can't show any city ordinances that says your home or yard has to be well manicured, because some people live in dumpy neighborhoods.

My older brother, until @ 10 years ago was in charge of all the grounds at Lowry AFB, Colo. He had every yard looking immaculate, but its something that he truly enjoys. I don't. Plus, it was his job.

In my world, when a man gets to a certain point they can do as they choose and not concern themselves with thinking about keeping up with the Jones'. I never worried about the Jones', because a lot of them are dead *** broke trying to impress people.

I know I'm a total outlier here, I've never given a crap what people think about me.

With starter fertilizer, it does not matter. Starter fertilizer is a slow release and harder to burn with. With the Scotts programs if there is rain within a specific time (48hours) the herbicide does not work. When you use Weed Be Gone, there is a smaller window; you can apply it only where needed and use smaller amounts. Targeted areas are better than blanket coverage.

A few years ago I noticed an interesting phenomena. Normally I drive around in a dirty old farm truck wearing a ratty Carhart shirt and ball cap. At stoplights women would glance over at me and quickly look away. Then in the evening I would be cleaned up, sport shirt, driving my wife’s Lexus RX350. Totally different reaction from women at stoplights….. I literally laughed out loud to myself when it happened time after time. Same guy inside the clothes. Same balance sheet.

You keep disagreeing people that are saying people should maintain their lawn and keep it looking nice - but then it sounds like you are keeping your yard and sidewalks looking nice 😂
I don’t think you are the outlier, just because you don’t enjoy it or do it yourself, you still see the value in keeping your place looking good!
