Least favorite position coach

About a tie between Bob Diaco and Kevin Cosgrove. Chinander is a very close second.
1. Kaz - DL coach under Bo. Wife beater, hot headed dickbag, and Iowa guy. The holy trinity of a-holes.
2. Bob Diaco. His douchiness was unparalleled. I’m still feeling the strain.
3. Reggie Davis - RB coach for Riley. No personal hate for the guys personality, I’ve never seen a coach here be less engaged with the job. He didn’t recruit, didn’t interview, and his RBs were below average.
It’s hard to fathom how bad the Frost era was. Between him as a HC, Duval at S&C, Verduzco, Barrett Ruud (loved him as a player, but couldn’t recruit), Chins as DC. We had a lot of bad coaches out there.

Kaz was a pretty good coach, but the guy was an absolute asshote. I can't believe some of the things he would yell at players during practice.
Whipple irritates me. Partly because the Pitt coach was 100% right. Can't win playing Whipple ball. Partly because it might have been the worst fit for an OC that Frost could find and only we would hire such a terrible fit.
Cosgrove, Elmo, or Banker. Awful.

I don’t know if our line will be a strength.but I do believe Rhule gave Raiola a second chance because of the **** show we had with Frost and Whipple butting heads on the direction of the offense. I t has to be tough to come up with blocking schemes when you’re not sure what the identity of the offense is and you can’t pick your own lineman recruits.
I believe there is part truth in that but also part of it is what I put in my post. It’s only a 1 year contract and Rhule said himself he will be involved in Both lines.
Meh Frost was the terrible fit. Whip was a hail Mary for that pos of an ex headcoach
Our returning lineman looked good as freshman, then Duval either turned them into statues or injuries cut their season short. Benhart as a freshman was night and day better than last season. My theory on Riola is, if he was good enough to get a job as a coach in the NFL, especially at his age, he's doing something right. Whipple controlling blocking schemes made Riola look like he was a garbage coach. Rhules teams at Baylor looked mean and physical. Let's hope we have that same identity too.

I'm sure it played a small part but I think Rhule missed on his first choice and had already probably looked at tape and the roster. The players seem to love him and I'm sure Rhule could tell from the tape we were a straight cluster. Plus Donovan fits his mold of being young. Won't take much to erase the Frost stank.
How Rich Fisher was hired I’ll never now.. He did play for Colorado is all I remember..
No idea but he's connected enough and seems like a guy with a plan.
Think about it. The guy has been a head coach for 10 year at 3 places. And I can't think of any hire down to admin positions he wasn't connected too. And he hires a relatively random oline coach? I think he missed on plan A and got good vibes from Donovan. Think about Donovans actual background. Comes from a family of maulers. Good center on prolific Wisconsin running teams. I don't think last year was the style Donovan wanted and Rhule could probably see that.
I think the only coaching job he had after leaving NU was a high school job which he got fired from after a few years. Bizarre hire by Pelini for sure.
Might be easier to name the ones we liked. LOL
we’ve had like 1 or 2 good RB coaches since Solich.
If you want to see how many bad Assistant Coaches we’ve had in total, do a “where are they now” on some of the old ones. Likely won’t find many coaching in P5

All I could find on Fisher was that he ended up as a volunteer assistant at Boston College after he was let go as a high school coach.

we started fumbling all over the place and the historic NU workhorse I-back got replaced with one dimensional, crouch right crouch left, lord right lord left...
I'm more a let the rb do most the heavy stuff, so your qb ain't beat up and keep defenses honest with his arm every 5th play or so..

Wagner currently appears to be out of football. Last job was HC for Blair Cliff where he went 12-30. He never coached a P5 team again after leaving Nebraska
Elmassin - currently out of football. Last job was DC @ Ferrum. Coached 1 year @ Purdue after leaving Nebraska. Otherwise always coached at lower than P5 level after leaving Nebraska

Downing is out of coaching. He never coached at P5 level after leaving Nebraska
Gilmore, Randy Jordan, Busch, and Norvelle did well after leaving.
So about half the staff was good, half bad. Can’t do that when running a P5 level program. And we can go down the list of other AC for Bo, Mike, and Scott too and you’ll see a lot of Cronyism. Which is what scares me about Matt but I know how “sensitive” some of you all with any criticism so maybe the 5th coach is the charm.

Good research. Age/experience and connections were factors in post-Nebraska career trajectories as well. Jordan and Bush were somewhat younger. Gilmore and Norvell had connections. Cosgrove and Elmassian were relatively older.2005’s coaches

Bo gave some young guys (Ekeler, Papuchis, Garrison) their first big chance and they have since proven to be good FBS coaches.
My novice opinion is younger guys can often be a good gamble as position coaches. They'll usually work and recruit hard, be open to learning new concepts, and relate better to the players.
Neither Verduzco and Austin had any business being a D1 Level coach. I never liked Phil Elmassian (Elmo). He was a Terrible DB coach!

I would rate one and four lowest, not because they're unimportant.....they are important. But both can be covered somewhat by other staff members.
Two and three though, absolute must-haves.
To me, these things sort of intermingle a bit. 1 and 4 are connected and 2 and 3 are connected.
There are programs that depend mostly on development and recruiting players that they hope have potential and there are programs that depend on recruiting the top players, where there is a higher floor.
If you are a coach at Iowa St, the middle 2 are the more important. If you are a coach at Ohio St, then the top and the bottom are more important.
A position coach that excels in all of these areas is worth his weight in gold. Have we ever had one? if so, who?
