It sounds like they want to go to a 3-6-6 format with 16 teams in the conference, giving 9 conference games per year.
If they added two more, probably 3-7-7 and 10 conference games per year. I guess the 4 west coast teams would be each others designated rivals in that case.

Not a surprise whatsoever. B1G was prepared for a while now to take Oregon and Washington IF but only IF the PAC collapses. The key though has been the B1G did NOT want to be accused of being the one to destroy the PAC which would have happened with the departure of Oregon and Washington. So they're waiting for someone else to do that dirty work and take the first step.

Guarantee they go to 20 teams within the next 8-10 years. SEC, ACC and Big 12 will do the same.

You have to believe that the B1G will dominate, along with the SEC. We'll have the best of everything. NU just has to get back to winning football. There''s no reason they shouldn't dominate the B1G West.

Except there isn’t going to be a B1G West division anymore. So we better be prepared to compete against OSU, PSU, Michigan, USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington. I hope Rhule is the coach who can get us there. For 22 years, both in the Big 12 North, and the B1G West (except for the first two years) we have played in the weakest divisions in college football and failed to win a damn thing of importance. So we are now going to have to step it up big time if NU football is to avoid falling into the bottom tier of B1G road kill.

In order to keep up, SEC will take Clemson and FSU from the ACC, destabilizing that conference.

Then the Big 10 will take advantage of that de-stabilization by offering Notre Dame a place at the table, with either North Carolina or Virginia as the fill-in 20th team.

And then the SEC will go to 20 with any combination of Miami, UNC, UVa, VaTech, NCSU and Duke.

E'erbody else will suck hind tit.

I haven’t heard that and not sure who would think about it in terms of one conference “killing” another. It’s all about fans. The B1G fills huge stadiums, gets massive TV contracts and the PAC just doesn’t. They just flat out don’t care about football as much in that region of the country. They have other **** to do with the mountains and the ocean.

I don’t know if the switch will move the needle for THEIR fans at all. But they will be piggy backing off of our fans’ viewership with us now watching our teams play their teams. So they will have more eyeballs on their games which is what they’re seeking. Everyone playing more games and better teams just equals more money, ad revenue, etc. It’s a win for everyone at the top so it’s inevitable. I won’t mind it either though.

I get that the world is run by football, but unlinking Carolina/Duke basketball would unquestionably be the biggest jolt to any college sport tradition, ever.

When it’s all said and done it will just be a couple of huge conferences vying for tv dollars without the NCAA policing things. What could possibly go wrong?☹️

A-greed.

I'd be in favor of college football separating itself from the NCAA, which would allow the Olympic sports, including basketball, to re-organize along more regional and traditional conference lines. Think 1978.

I wonder if the Big 12 will try to poach Arizona, ASU, and Utah. Arizona and ASU have a lot to offer, but also have a history of underachieving. Better coaching hires would go a long way for them. Utah is an easy choice to pair with BYU and capitalize on the LDS market.

Eventually it's going to be one NFL-like organization of top college teams that will have monopoly power in terms of negotiating media deals. They may have divisions or conferences within that organization (like the NFL) but it will be one single organization facing off with the media and orchestrating a national championship playoff.

Not gonna happen anytime soon imo. The B1G has also vetted Texas, Kansas, Mizzou, and Texas A&M. The B1G is taking on a huge task integrating USC and UCLA into the conference the logistics alone are a huge undertaking. UW and UO are begging for invites but I don't see expansion happening soon. If/When ND wants in they will get in and the SEC and B1G really want the ACC schools more than they do UW and UO. They don't make travel any easier as it's a 3 hour flight from LA to Seattle. It's also a 3 hour flight from LA to Lincoln. It actually makes travel even more of a pain and doesn't make the money pie any bigger. Not sure why everyone wants UW and UO. B1G can do better.

This is pretty much the plan. The 12 team playoff is just a short term arrangement and the 2 conferences will break from the NCAA into their own football playoff. Anything beyond 40, only waters down the profits.

Duke and North Carolina are going to stay in the same conference. Some of you are nuts. Also the thought that Duke will be left out in the cold is nuts too.

I agree, Oregon and Washington can join the Big 12. The B1G should focus on ND and the Florida schools Miami and FSU.

The B1G was already guilty of that the day they poached USC and UCLA from the PAC 12.

I don’t think it splits quite like this from an east / west divisions but I agree on those targets.

While cable TV viewers isn’t as big of a driver as it once was, Washington is still a huge market.

Oregon doesn’t make as much sense from a dollars perspective, but I think they want a 4th west coast team. Its a new brand of CFB but it would be nice to keep some regional rivalries intact. I think they end up picking up Washington and one of UO/Cal/Stanford.

Notre Dame seems to want to stay independent, I don’t think that changes. So I agree they’ll go hard after UNC and UVA, with Georgia Tech and Miami being the other candidates.

All those schools fit what the B1G is looking for from an academic and research brand too.

I was referring to the Nebraksa/Iowa/Minnesota/Wisconsin pod. I know that things will change. With the additions of Oregon and Washington, USC/UCLA will have natural rivals to bring to the conference.

Oregon and Washington don't want to join a dying conference.
Big 12 is actually being proactive in expansion. If they add the Arizona schools, CU, Oregon and Washington they'll have a path to the 12 team playoffs. Of course they're not going to make the same money as the big dawgs but they won't die.

It may have changed now with a new commissioner but before the commissioner turnover the plan was to have a west coast roster of games for the night airwaves complementing the more easterly teams and providing a more complete package for media consumption. The thing that held it back was the B1G not wanting to be accused of destroying the PAC. They wanted somebody else to be that villain so they could just swoop in. And that villain could yet be the Big 12 taking 4 teams that may become unhappy with the new PAC media prospects.

Mountains and oceans aren't keep people on the west coast from being rabid football fans. It's 12 saturdays a year.

Everyone is busy in the fall, even up north. Even in MN and Wisconsin your talking duck hunting, deer hunting, fall fishing, harvest, etc. Weather in September/early October is fantastic up there most years. It isn't like December/January when people are stuck inside.
