OT: BB Student Section - Creative Fun or Unsportsmanlike

Over the weekend, at a college BB game, several Colorado State students chanted "Russia" to a Utah State opponent, who is from Ukraine. The Colorado State head coach and athletic department apologized to Utah State. Apparently, the Mountain West conference is investigating the situation.

Was this good, clean fun and a creative way of trying to get under a player's skin, or did it cross the line? What do you think of the university's actions?

Since this is confirmed that it actually happened, not a fake story, I’m going with rough as hell student body pushing the line but don’t think anything other than knock it off lecture is needed. Feel like I’m getting way too old but I heard worse for most of my time in basketball stands, football stands and baseball fields.

Remember a HS team playing BoysTown back in the day and heard a ‘we have parents’ chant… think this is in As poor of taste. Lasted about 10 seconds til an administrator eviscerated them, publicly. Stopped the damned game, lol…

(Russia aside, we have zero business in Ukraine. It’s a money laundering scheme for the Executive and Legislative branches being presenting the guise as actually beneficial for us. Europe’s problem…)

Hey, let's yell "earthquake" at players from Turkey or Syria. That's some funny stuff. Only 3,400 dead at the latest count. (To be clear, this is my attempt at sarcasm.)

Some of the responses on this thread seem to lack any humanity. That's sad.

not all jokes are funny. many step over the line. shall we throw everyone who's dared to utter something cross into the ocean?

words: the horror!

What you should have said...is that "in retrospect I can see how this crossed a line and those who did it should be held accountable". Instead of doubling down.

For those that believe this is over the line, buy a little or buy a lot, answer me this. What do you draw the line at? What is the acceptable edge of making jokes trying to get in another players head trying to distract from the other team? What other areas are not allowed? Since there seems to be more people who see that says, a inappropriate or worse act by the student body let’s provide some specific examples of where that line is so that we don’t have to just do the pattycake pattycake all cheer cheer Rara. Everything is Kumbaya. Give us some examples of that on the edge. Thanks.

I, for one, will not rest until every statement made by every person on Earth is okayed by a panel of linguists from every possible background within the context of what's both ever happened in human history & what's happening at this very second in time

Won’t give specific examples as I don’t have any, but my jokes and judgements stay away from anything that is not self -imposed. Things that people can’t control/or didn’t choose should be left alone.

First of all, this is crossing the line. To you king_kong, when the f*** is a chant about a war and people dying a f****** joke? I’ve been to war. It’s not a joke. You’re an a**hole even saying some stupid s**t like that. The people involved should be dealt with and not with a lecture. It’s disgusting and it’s inexcusable. There are ways of talking smack in sports that is all in good fun. But, this is not one of them. Never will be.

Ukraine supplies 90% of the higly refined semiconductor grade neon for our microchip production both in the US and Taiwan.

In case you're not aware these chips in our MANPADS, Javelin, and HIMARS rockets are what is taking out 100000+ invading Muscovites whom are tying Ukrainian citizens hands behind their backs and burying them in mass graves like the one in Bucha Ukraine.

Without a good supply of refined neon we are going to have a hard time defending ourselves let alone Ukraine or Europe.

Ukraine supplies 40% of the world's krypton gas as well. Not to mention is also a huge wheat exporter to many nation who are not food self sufficient.

What WILL happen is people will migrate in mass to where the food is. And that means Europe. If Europe is saddled with untold numbers of migrants, they become less of an effective ally for the US in regards to our policies involving nations that don't have a problem threatening the United States.

You can't play geopolitical checkers all your life and expect your grandchildren to have the same liberty as you enjoy. Some wars are more serious than others.

Great post, and I’ll take my schooling as it comes. That said, you know as well as everyone that those well-placed in Gubmint are securing multi-generational wealth with this… it’s just mostly a sham.

My response would be that of a brilliant late US Supreme Court justice who, when asked what constitutes pornography, stated "You know it when you see it."

Yeah speech is great until someone says something you dont like. Mobs are formed this way. Its the same as it ever was. What I find funny is what is acceptable and what is not, according to the whims of said mob at the time.

If it is Bidens greed or the Bidens acting as agents for the Democratic party getting rich off their positions in government in a quid pro quo, being monetarily rewarded and/or gaining speacial influence with foreign nations like is suggested, that danger to our republic, although is serious if it becomes precedential, is less serious than a gun in your face right now....as is the threat of nations invading nations sparking world wars.

I would rather see production and manufacturing come back to the US and then we could just stay out of the BS overseas because then we control the means of production, but right now we have policies in place that help our...frenemies and weaken ourselves, purposely undermining our natural advantages in order to gain local allies against the Soviet Union such as China.

Back in the 80's, Mizzou had a good basketball center named Steve Stipinovich. He reported that a crazed gunman entered his room and shot him in the shoulder, minimally wounding him. Later, he admitted he had accidentally shot himself.
From a published story:
"After three days in seclusion, Stipanovich returned to action in the most pleasant environment possible—at Oral Roberts. Nobody exploded popguns or flashed WHO SHOT STIPO? WHO SHOT STUPO? signs, as fans later would at Kansas and Kansas State. Nobody wore bandages with fake blood gushing out, as spectators would at Colorado and Oklahoma. "

I relay that because I remember our own student section shot off pop guns when he stepped on the court in Lincoln.

Different times for sure.

That’s a LOT different than taunting a Ukrainian over that awful situation. It’s like going to a Holocaust survivor meeting dressed as Hitler. Awful awful behavior. And I was at the Mizzou NU game in Columbia when Stipo’s own Antlers ridiculed him with catcalls. One of my buddies was the grand Poobaa of the Antlers. Helluva guy actually that any Husker fan would love to drink beer with.
