Gary is out. It will be difficult to grab any rebounds, especially if Keita remains limited in his mobility backing up Walker.

Do we start Dawson or Breidenbach at the 4? If Dawson, we give up some offense and height. If Breidenbach, he'll have three fouls in the first three minutes, so we get Dawson anyway. Either way, we're giving up experience, defense and rebounding against one of the best teams in the conference at their place.

-15 sounds about right.

Gary is going to be a substantial loss for us moving forward until he’s available to help contribute again if we want to have have post season aspirations..

Yep. Reminds me of Copeland's injury a few years ago. Lots of high hopes for the team, but we weren't deep enough to make up for the loss of a super-senior starter.

Some not-so-fun history about the basketball team's struggles to win an NCAA Tournament game.

As you know, the NCAA Tournament used to invite only conference champions and highly ranked at-large teams to its 16-team (then 32, then 48) tournament prior to going to 64 teams in 1986.

During my time in Lincoln (1962-84), the Huskers often had teams ranked high enough to be invited to the Dance during the recent era, but not then. These rankings are based on the Simple Rating System, which accounts for both point margin and strength of schedule.

16 teams in the Dance
  • In 1966, the Huskers were 37th in the SRS, but KU won the conference and earned the only bid.
  • 1967, 55th, and KU was the only Big 8 team.
  • 1968, 50th, and KSU was the Big 8 team.
  • 1971, 51st, and KU was it.
32 teams
  • 1976, 48th, and Mizzou was the Big 8 team.
  • 1978, 28th, Mizzou and KU repped the Big 8.
48 teams
  • 1981, 48th, KU, Mizzou and K-State
  • 1982, 24th, Mizzou and K-State
  • 1983, 39th, Oklahoma, Mizzou and OSU
Then in 1986, when we finally were good enough to make the now-64-team tourney, our all-time leading scorer was injured and couldn't play. Without Dave Hoppen, we lost to Western Kentucky, Moe Iba was fired the next day, and we all figured it would just be a matter of time before our perennial contenders would win a game in the Dance.

You know how that has worked out.

…. And yet our BB team has a better chance than FB at a national championship?

Damn, I miss being excited about our teams.

BB = 0.0% chance.

At least with football there is history, making it possible, but unlikely anytime soon.

There is absolutely no reason for Wilcher to be on the floor. They’d be the same team playing 4 on 5 without him. He’s gonna finish off the Fred era
Without Gary and Griesel what options would you put out there? they really don’t have anything.

fire fred, bring in best young black coach you can find. give him half freds money and turn program around in 2 years. if he dont, rinse and repeat. if he does then double his salary and sign him to a long term contract. time to move into a realistic approach

There’s no rule against one player taking 100% of your shots. Seems to be NU’s best chance in this one.

Been unusual Nebraska has worn their home white uniforms away from home last two away games…

Must be a request for the home team.. Just seems odd..

According to kenpom the 2nd best B1G team at this moment behind purdue is…

Rutgers

Looking like another year with no final 4 teams for our esteemed league

Who’d have thought this time last year neither harbaugh nor Howard would be at Mich much longer

So basically the team is still terrible AND now it feels like Fred really has no plan other than try to plug holes season-by-season with transfers? Has it ever, at any point, felt like Fred was "building" anything?

Next year looks very depressing at this point.

Send him packing, hire Kansas’s (or similar) youngest assistant

Way overdue

I have mentioned that before early in the season. I don't foresee an "experienced" coach from the P5 conferences being serious candidates. Coaches from non-P5 have not worked out because while they may be good coaches and game managers, the recruiting to Nebraska is too much to overcome. Despite great facilities and great fan base, it takes more than a good X/O. We need to spend a good chunk of change to go after a top assistant at a blue blood program, one who has a clear track record of recruiting. Then have him hire 1-2 other up and coming assistants who can also recruit. Within 3-4 years I believe Nebraska would make the NCAAs and win their first-ever game if this is the route they take -- if Hoiberg can't get it turned around quickly.

Back-up plan: John Calipari may be available as Kentucky fans are not happy.

I hope they consider a builder over someone who just bails kids out of their current situation. Limit these ne'er-do-well chronic transfers who are good athletes but overall lacking basketball players. Build a cohesive culture. Hoiberg has the intensity of Barry Collier but has better athletes and worse records. I never saw the want-to with Collier nor do I see it with Hoiberg.

Can we be patient? We've been the epitome of patience. What's a few more years.

K-State takes down the Jayhawks.

One year removed from Bruce Weber (aka Mr. Haney from Green Acres) and they’re headed into the top 10.

Maybe Fred should take notes on how to assemble a competitive roster.
