25 years ago Nebraska won the split National Championship and played all their home games on artificial turf..
Wrong.. This is the 2022 season still.. Nebraska beat Tennessee January 2 1998..
This isn’t the 2023 National Championship tonight..

with the money we have rolling in from the conference there is only 1 reason to not have real grass in Memorial Stadium - it would take money out of admins' pockets
both the teams playing tonight play on grass so the 2023 champ can already be counted
you are correct. but i think what scarletred was saying is that technically the 2022 championship hasn't been played yet, so until it happens the 97 championship is 25.

The potential for the sh## I saw on a Thanksgiving game with OU in town is a GREAT reason to not have natural grass. It would have been like playing on a parking lot. We had a foot of snow in the stands and -30 wind chill. As long as we live where we do natural turf makes zero sense
so what happened 50 years ago is a good reason?

it's 2023. northwestern has played on grass for eternity in 500x worse weather. same with basically all the teams in the northeast.
heat the field, grow a world class natural surface. we would not be the first to do this by a long shot. happens all over the world, and in many locations with much worse weather than NE
plus, it's infinitely better for player health (something I assumed you'd care about)
Look how much difficulty in the past with injuries we have had when playing in West Lafayette, Look at the crap fields in bowl games that had grass like the Pinstripe and Holiday bowls with footing..

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but the original twitter post said years, not seasons. So unless I am missing or counting incorrectly, don't those arguing either seasons or years each technically have a claim for being correct?

I know you weren’t around in 1972 when Nebraska played in Ames and purposely left the sprinkler’s on before Saturday’s game Nebraska was still in contention for a third national title..
Nebraska had 2 interceptions and fumbled 6 times that day, ISU QB Amundson threw a TD pass with 23 seconds remaining, thank God they missed the extra point and the game ended in 23-23 tie..
After this game is just showed me that it’s was a equalizer for a team that‘s not the better team on the field..

There’s zero reason to not be playing on artificial turf. There’s no statistically different rate of injury between real and fake turf.

Grass will eventually give, which often releases the cleat prior to reaching an injurious load. On synthetic surfaces, there is less give, meaning our feet, ankles and knees absorb the force, which makes injury more likely to follow.
The data supports the anecdotes you’ll hear from me and other players: artificial turf is significantly harder on the body than grass. Based on NFL injury data collected from 2012 to 2018, not only was the contact injury rate for lower extremities higher during practices and games held on artificial turf, NFL players consistently experienced a much higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries on turf compared to natural surfaces. Specifically, players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Of those non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a staggering 69% higher rate of non-contact foot/ankle injuries on turf compared to grass.

I’m saying that’s propaganda by somebody with a misplaced agenda. Now show me the study where they show the injuries with frozen or chewed up turf. I would a thousand times rather play a bad weather game on artificial turf than grass.

I would like to keep players safe while perhaps gaining a little bit of home field advantage. who in hell says no to that?
There is a much larger chance to play on a non frozen field though. Very few games overall in College and NFL are played on frozen fields. That also makes the case for natural grass. Natural grass has higher maintenance costs and higher injury rates.
As for turf, it is basically frozen every game as there is concrete a few inches under it. Get rid of the conete and turf would be best.
