Did we actually have fans that didn’t know who Mike Riley was?

Honestly, I did not, or at least I paid so little attention to Oregon State that his name never took hold. When a friend called me and asked what I thought of the new coach, I was like “who the heck is he?”

So I’m guilty as charged! 😁

Greg Schiano.

Yes, everyone knows who he is, but he's basically Riley in terms of a matching resume and an attempt to find a coach that's the opposite personality of the previous head coach.

Resume: two stints at the same school, a brief and mediocre run in the NFL, never won a championship in anything, a mixed bag of college seasons (just enough winning not to get fired), zero ties to Nebraska or the midwest.

My Dad called me the day MR was hired. I was at work working on a piece of equipment. It went like this:
I answer the call with: What's up ya old fooker?
Dad: Mike.. Fookin'.. Riley
Me: Mike Fookin' Riley? What do you mean?
Dad: That's the Head Coach we just hired. Mike... Fookin'... Riley.
Me: Who the Fook is Mike Riley? (As I say this, it dawns on me) Oh, that loser from Oregon State?
Dad: Yeah, that loser from Oregon State.. Mike.. Fookin'.. Riley.
Me: What a bunch of idiots.
Dad: You got that straight.

A conversation with my Dad that I will never forget. ... Mike... Fookin'... Riley.

Riley did in fact win a Grey Cup in the CFL

Gary Patterson would be like a Riley hire. Obviously we know who he is and he had success at TCU. But he’s old, he is currently a consultant, he’s below .500 his last four years as a head coach. That would be a WTF hire to me.

Riley was an excellent HC during his younger years, winning a gray cup and engineering upset wins in the PAC, but he appeared to have lost something over the years, perhaps his schemes were out dated or he just didn't want to work the 16 hour days anymore. He was the wrong guy for NU.

Yep and let's hope to hell we don't repeat that by hiring Mickey Joseph based off silly emotion

Schiano would do better than Riley. Winning at Rutgers ain't easy. The current Oregon state coach is better than Mike Riley and has them currently winning in Seattle on espn2

My brother and I had Husky season tickets so I knew Riley pretty well. I had to tell all my friends in Nebraska about Riley. They just knew the propaganda the OW-H and LJS had put out on him. I was back for Memorial Day weekend that year he was hired and must have had 15 people listening in on my critique on Mike Riley around #6 tee box. That is how vividly I can remember it. Many were dismayed on what I was telling them. Most assumed he was going to be a good coach. (By the way I just finished watching the Huskies win their game against Oregon State. May make the news in the morning. There was another scuffle between the players at the end of the game. This one was near the Oregon State bench).

We know who Matt Campbell is probably mostly because he’s in the Midwest but he would be only slightly better than Riley at best.

I think his biggest problem was his recruiting. He’s a bright coach but at this stage probably best off as an analyst

Anyone that has coached any team to a winning record at any time will be an improvement. PJ Fleck is toying with Nebraska. Again. Our coaches have zero clue what to do. Again.
