I'm thinking it is someone outside of the names that have been mentioned or Kyle Whittingham. Just a shot in the dark, but I just have a feeling about it. Also, if Severe and others who think they know are right, not many names on that list provide an 80% approval rating.

I could totally see that happening....and Nebraska will suck.

Hires like that are lottery tickets. Maybe you get fortunate. Most likely you get disappointed.

Nebraska had to settle for Bob Devaney. A coach with a 78 win%. After interviewing 3 other guys who turned down the job. Ray Nagel with a 20- 19 record, John Ralston with a 23-9 record and Duff Daugherty with a 49-23 records. All are win % below Devaney. And has sucked hiring anyone since.

I have no doubts they would try "hiring outside the box."

Well at least we're getting closer to knowing who it will be. I'd think Trev would want it wrapped up as soon as the regular season ends in time to support the early recruit signing. Trev should have had plenty of time by now to complete his analysis.

Yeah, I mean it is going to be a difficult situation, but at this point, if the coach is Urban, Petersen, or someone not coaching, let's announce it now so we can really get going with the recruiting. If it is a current head coach, I understand having to wait, but as time drags on, I just don't see MJ being the guy. I think he could still be the guy if you paid for some coordinators, but Saturday was ugly again.

I’m anticipating that he will announce the hire on Saturday/Sunday after black Friday’s game, unless there’s a candidate is still coaching another team..

No. That was legendary. But I'm saying had the university not got turned down by 3 other guys, all of which had inferior records, they would not have got Devaney.

Devaney hired Tom. But Devaney didn't win titles until AFTER Tom Osborne changed the offense.

After Tom changing his offense and winning those titles, Devaney probably considered Tom a safe bet to succeed.

Devaney was reluctant at first to take the job, he told Duffy Daugherty that the facility’s were very poor and he wasn’t impressed.. Daugherty told him if you go there you can win a national championship..

the coaching staff - coordinators, position coaches etc should warrant salaries near the top of the BIG - regardless of who the head coach is

I don't like the narrative that Mickey might be OK as long as we pay top dollar for coordinators and staff

I'm still hoping MJ finishes the season strong enough to get the nod, but wow it looks like a steep vertical cliff to scale from here.

Garret Riley, current OC at TCU. Comes from good bloodlines of successful coaching (brother is Lincoln Riley)

Who do I want?
Who do I want that I think we might also be able to get?
Who do I think Trev will hire?

All different answers.

I'm still on the MJ bandwagon. This season was a loss before he who shall not be named was canned. Nobody was going to turn this dumpster fire around this season. What I do like is that these kids really aren't showing any quit and that says a lot about Mickey. I still say give him a couple seasons and see what he can do.

It is very concerning to me that MJ has apparently given Whipple complete deference, when what Wipple has been doing this year really isn't working - bad Oline or not. Wipple's offense apparently worked last season at Pitt with a QB good enough to start in the NFL as a rookie (albeit not with a lot of success), but when else has it been successful? And how often will Nebraska have a QB who will start in the NFL - ever, let alone as a rookie? Yeah, we scored some points against mediocre/bad defenses - less than stellar secondaries. If MJ is truly HC material, he needed to have the nads to step in there by about mid-3rd quarter and say Wip, this clearly aint going to work, lets try something different. If they come out agianst MN with Purdy dropping back 35 times, I will be completely off the MJ train as HC. I'd still love him staying on as a wide receiver coach, but not HC.

I think Joseph has done an admirable job with the ****** hand he was dealt, but hasn't made a strong enough case for dropping the interim tag. If NU can pay Scott Frost $5 million a year to go away, it can surely attract someone with a more proven track record. From the list above, Klieman and Leipold are not my top choices but I think they are the most realistic.

I will be a huge MJ supporter if named - but if your resume is an outlier compared with other candidates or you aren't considered a viable candidate for a similar position by your competitors then you better do something remarkable while the interim to get the job - that hasn't happened yet IMO

everyone uses Dabo as an example - he took over a team that was 1-3 against power 5 teams and went 4-2 including beating their rival - S Carolina (who was 7-4) 31-14

if he goes 2-4 he isn't Clemson's head coach

Unfortunately for Micky he now doesn’t have the QB to help him win those games… From what we seen Saturday if Thompson doesn’t come back, I don’t see this team winning another game with Whipple’s passing offense..

I don't see that one, not for the fact he isn't a good coach, just think he is too much of a gamble. I pray Trev has his own plan, we just can't afford to **** this thing up again. I hope he gets an established winner and doesn't go with a mid-tier risky hire.

After another lackluster game, who becomes the head guy?
I think BOB is the most logical choice but I’m not seeing enough smoke about him in Lincoln to believe it will happen. At this point maybe what we need is an out of the blue virtually unknown young coach🤔

Despite the wishy washyness of this board, absolutely nothing has changed since Frost was fired. NOTHING. Mickey is still the placeholder and we are going to hire the best candidate possible after the end of the season. Hopefully before bowl season….which we won’t be a part of unfortunately. Gimme BoB or Kiff if humanly possible. Mickey is an option only if the top 15-20 available say no. There are names that we aren’t even considering as options. Coaches that aren’t currently free and/or not making it known that they are available. Change will be needed for some coaches or programs. Trev is in a good spot to fish around.

If you gamble, you go with Mickey. Most of our hires have been gambles, for me it is time to get a sure thing. There are a few coaches who fit that mold. To me BOB is not one of them.
All of the hires short of giving Urban 20 million for 8 years are gambles. Even then you never know when Urb would decide to bang another coed or kick a player.

I’m not totally against gambling on Mickey. Trev knows him and his abilities vet well

To me there are a few true blue winners out there that have done it for a long time.

Urban - His track record speaks for itself and he would win here.

Whittingham - Yeah, he's never won a natty, but the dude just wins games. I know it's the Pac 12, but he's just a great coach

Gundy - Has stinkers, but dude wins games and has for a long time.

Petersen - A lot more of a gamble since he has been out of the game, but dude won everywhere he went.

I guess for me, I think you get a dude that is a winner and that has don't it for a long time, not just a 5 year window at a smaller school.

Hey, could you flesh this out for me since I'm dumb? Not sure what this means. Also, I voted for Kiffen because I'm sticking with my hopes for a wow hire and he would be it. And he's got a big enough ego and is enough of a mercenary to take the job simply for the raise and the PR that goes with it. My real top choice would be Gundy but it just seems so unlikely he would ever leave OSU at this point.

I feel like we get Leipold because he’s willing to come here. Or Kiffin.
I’d take either, but Leipold really needs to drop that DC and go get a good new DC.
My wish list of at least somewhat realistic candidates would be Klieman, Kiffin, Leipold.
Rhule would be interesting, but I don’t know about that.
After seeing what Klieman did to Gundy with KSU level talent… I’d love to see him with Nebraska level talent. Right now he’s my top choice

Mike'l Severe and others people have alluded to that NU has their guy and that said hire would have an 80% approval by the fanbase. This was said a few weeks ago, so who really knows, but many names associated with the search are not going to warrant an 80% approval rate. Folks like Klieman, Campbell, Leipold, BOB, etc. are probably 50% at best, especially with Mickey sitting there.

3. Dabo Swinney salary: $10.5 million (Clemson)

4. Lincoln Riley salary (estimated): $10-plus million (USC)

5. Brian Kelly salary: $9.5 million (LSU)

6. Mel Tucker salary: $9.5 million (Michigan State)

7. Ryan Day salary: $9.5 million (Ohio State)

8. David Shaw salary: $8.925 million

9. Mario Cristobal salary: $8 million (Miami)

10. Jimbo Fisher salary: $7.5 million (Texas A&M)

11. Lane Kiffin salary: $7.25 million (Ole Miss)

12. Jim Harbaugh salary: $7.05 million (Michigan)

13. James Franklin salary: $7 million (Penn State)

I know it would never happen, but it would intrigue me if Trev went after John Harbaugh. That could be a super fun time. I'm probably in the minority, but I love the Harbaugh's and would love to see us have a tough *** team like Michigan or the Ravens. He makes 9M

Before you jump on me, I know there is no way in hell he is coming here.

If Severe is saying it I would bet it’s true. I’ve thought it was likely for a while. Of course, Dave Wannstedt was all but signed days after Frank was fired and we know how that turned out. Pedie told a booster of substance acquaintance of mine that Wannstedt was coming BEFORE Frank was terminated. 🫤

IF it’s Campbell that would explain ISU’s collapse.
