Assuming no health-related issues

Will Huskers adopt DEVO’s ‘Whip It’?

will fans spray Reddi-Whip after a score?

inquiring minds want to know

It’s a good question I’ve also asked. Hard to judge Whipple when he has no OL to run plays effectively.

I think he’s probably done after his year but I could see them discussing one more year of whip and then transition to the next era of husker football. Maybe a focus on defense in year one of MJ.

Exactly. I can see the brilliance as the play unfolds - just to see it come crashing to a halt due to poor oline play.

I question if his health has him WANTING to coach anymore though.

And the stress of coaching at Nebraska is not good for one’s health (regardless of any healthy compensation).

Whip said he would ride Mickey’s coattails. Would think a guy like him would want to exit on an upswing.

I want him to stay on, that's a definite. Been very pleased with his offense sans a terrible line.

I think Mickey will want him to stay. He will need a new DC and some stability on offense, while changing schemes and fixing the defense would be nice.

Also could Mickey and Whip convince Palmer to stick around?

Gotta fix that oline first thing though unfortunately. #1 priority imo

The passing offense can be potent and Grant has abilities. But given the Oline play, opposing teams are stoning the run and making NU one dimensional. Jet sweeps and some runs by Thompson have to be mixed in.

Maybe if Palmer's NIL exceeds an unfavorable draft rating.

I also see him staying on for 1 more, if he can manage it, but also in helping with a transition plan for the offense.

Hope not. I’d like to see Mickey pick and choose his own staff. I don’t see it including Whip. Could very easily be wrong.

Good question. I have no clue what MJ would envision for an offense in the future but keeping Whipple, at least short term, would help a lot with continuity.

I don’t like Whips offense. It’s ok, better than Frosts but we need the next guy in ASAP. If Mickey stays he needs to let go everyone except Beckton and that’s why I worry he might be hired… he could keep a few guys that don’t deserve it

One would think Mickey would want his time to start with his guys in place, especially knowing that Whip may retire in 1-2 years. I would like to start my tenure with my OC from the jump. You avoid just getting the ball rolling and change again when he leaves. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he stays though.

On the topic, does he have a three year contract like Mickey?

For sure fixing OL and S&C is vital. I wouldn’t mind seeing us go back to 2 OL coaches if we need to.
Wasn’t Dan Young sort of an asst. OL coach and also handled special teams.

Did there ever end up any truth to Whip having declining health? I honestly wouldn't mind to see what he can do for a couple years.

hope so

heard today someone talking about the difference between play callers and play designers

Whip is the former, our previous guy is the latter

there's a reason our best player is wide open all the time when we need it most

HCMJ has mentioned several times being HC is not overwhelming because he can lean on Whip who has been a HC before and has years of experience. MJ probably wants his own guy in 24, but I could see him keeping the Charmin squeezer one more year.

If MJ is retained he needs to just clean house. I feel like we have some decent coaches in the room, but at the end of the day, outside of Applewhite, I'd can them all just to start over. There has been a few bright spots, but need a total restart. I thought maybe you could keep a Fish or a Beckton as they seem to be good coaches and recruiters, but at this point I think we just need to boot everyone outside of Applewhite as he is new and seems to have done a good job.

If Whip is getting too old he could be an "analyst" for the offense. He got Addison and now Palmer the ball when the D knew they would be targeting them.

Good point! Save this health, yet still benefit from his wisdom. I like it - if it must come to that.

I disagree. He should definitely keep Bill Busch. In fact, without Bill Busch, likely we don't beat Indiana or Rutgers and MJ doesn't get the job.

If he was smart (or whoever the next HC is), he'd retain Whipple as OC. Whipple is one of the best in the game when he has big time talent and coaching at OL. You can see glimpses of how good the offense can be with superior offensive line play and superior/smart QB play (very few interceptions) - look no further than his last season at Pitt. There was brilliance in that offense that year.

The S&C are fine as these dudes are conditioned and strong as fk and there isn't one team that has out muscled them or taken them off of their feet as it's been just all mistakes due to learning a brand new system. The problem with the OL is 2 things, 1 we lost a surefire Outland Trophy and Rimmington award candidate in Jurgens as he left and could've played another year and the other was Autin's OL playbook had been completely scrapped when Riola came on board and now the OL is learning a whole brand new OL playbook that is on the opposite side of the spectrum than Austin's and not only that, has anyone looked at the OL room as Hixson is the only true blue Senior in that room as this is his 6th year and I don't count Williams as was only a transfer from the portal. If people are thinking that they should be barnstormers right now are absolutely dilusional and should have their heads examined as this new system will take time as the OL room has to unlearn the former system and just like after Frost got here Chin's D got better every year including the DL up to last year but look at we lost as that was a huge difference maker as those were old dudes in the system. Chin should be faulted for not coaching up and developing those behind the rotoation during those years.
