Just thinking out loud. Do you think the transfer portal can help negate our regional challenges with recruiting? In other words less focus on getting 18 years top 150 guys (4*s) … and more focus on selling playing time and NIL $$$s and therefore the 500 mile challenge is a moot point

Absolutely. Portal can't be the only approach, and we still need top recruiting classes like we've already had (20-25 area). But I think it helps a team like us much more than Bama OSU, etc

What I have noticed, is the top tier teams will get a few portal guys to fill holes. What we have been doing is building the team around them, especially last year.

Reminds me of KSU in the 90s building their teams with junior college players. I think eventually you need to recruit and develop talent or you end up in a cycle of new players each year. Which make it harder to build a team culture.

It hurts us. We aren’t and won’t ever be talented enough to compete at the highest level, so while we can fill gaps, it’s the mid 3* and a few low 4* that we have to bank on staying for 4 or 5 years and hope the team gels and you catch lightning in a bottle and can go 9-3. Best case scenario. Anything better I can guarantee you’re older than 30!!

We can go 9-3 with the talent we have right now. It doesn't take a miracle. Just need the right leader.

Exactly right. Teams like Alabama and OSU have stacked lineups because of their recruiting. The few transfers that those schools bring in are hi caliber. Another thing to consider are the kids that are transferring out of those top schools are probably really decent - because of the vast talent in front of them - and can really help that next-level program like Nebraska

Yes, but there shouldn't be less focus on recruiting top level high school talent. Actually it should incentivize thinking more about quality from the high school ranks and skipping out on reaches because you should be able to fill that with transfers instead.

Portal is like free agency in the NFL. You can pull in a couple of really good players, but you better develop your own talent.
