What's the damage in the 2 games they lost or the game NU won by 3 TD's?

A backup likely would not caused the win to be a loss, but may have turned either of the losses into a win.
Thompson won the job, if you take him out of a game, it gives the appearance that you have lost confidence. Secondly, if the back up comes out and goes 7/7 150 yards and a TD or 2, now you have an unnecessary situation to deal with. Even if the coach says the starter is still the starter, the fans, the media and all the people on these boards will be calling for the back up QB.

the QB is the leader of the offense. Getting the back up ready is what practice is for.

Ochaun Mathis and Tommi Hill spoke to reporters briefly after leaving the Frost-firing meeting:

"But both Hill and Mathis described a problematic culture that had developed under their former coach. Asked what needs to change with Nebraska football, Hill said the Huskers need to cement “more into a bond.”

“Being more into a whole circle,” Hill continued, “not two circles.”

I understand. I coached middle school girls basketball for five years.

Yes. Overall roster size needs to shrink to about 110.

If the roster size in the BIg Ten road games is 75? Those are your supposed 75 most important players, the 110 still accounts for an extra 35 kids who could be on the squad serving some type purpose.

110 is 4+ deep in all positions and includes long snappers, punters, kickers, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trev and Mickey, next year will reduce the size of the overall squad.
Imagine walking on to play for Frost. 🤢

150 is nuts. Carry a couple of walk on QBs for sure but man we’ve got trim it some

There’s actually been quite a few walk ons play for Frost. Those kids walk on to put on that N, not to play for Frost.
I couldn't bring myself to turn down a scholarship to walk-on these days. Huge financial gamble.

Tommi Hill is the one in the ND game the announcers were talking about doing tic tok dances on the sideline, the one freaking out when we 'stopped' them on 3rd down, when really they picked it up. Showboats every overthrown ball his way, rapes the receiver on every play. I mean, I want to see some passion from the kids too, but know your role, know the game and situation. He should be PISSED they arent curb stomping a team like ND. He should not be dancing on the sideline, unless he made some crazy behind the back intercepetion or some shite. Which he did not. Id like to hear from a player like Nelson or Rhamir or Reimer as to what the issues were.

Agree, but, as you say, if "the backup comes out and goes 7/7 150 yards and a TD or 2", maybe, just maybe NU is 3-0 or 2-1 instead of 1-2.

During Frost's tenure, it made no difference how much, as you say, "the fans, media and all the people on this board were calling for the backup QB", Frost stayed with AM, and he stays with CT.

Nebraska fans clamoring for a change in QB's goes all the way back to the mid 60's with Fred Duda and Bob Churchich, it continued with Jerry Tagge and Van Brownson, and as recently as Tommy Frasier and Brook, and into the Crouch and Newcombe years.

Throughout NU history, the backup has made a difference, in some cases, between a win and a loss. It didn't mean the backup was going to win the job.
I thought I qualified my position in my post. In a perfect world CT will remain healthy and lead the team. He's done a really good job and a move to the backup only serves the purpose of seeing how they respond when it's a real game.

I'm well aware practice is for getting the backup ready to play. That has served NU so well in the last 4 years with Vedral, Bunch and Smothers right? They got them ready in practice too.

I imagine the OU people have looked at last years OU-TX game to see what CT did to throw 5 td passes and what OU did to offset areas where CT wasn't as good at. Whatever area showed less effectiveness in CT's game will be used again.

Thanks for the points Tuco, I'm not really interested in defending my position since I'm not clamoring for a QB change, just not as interested in possibly setting up the backup for failure in the event CT does go down to an injury.

When you have two transfers say these things it's pretty telling you have a problem that won't go away until a few butts are thrown out. I believe Joseph will do an adequate job of finding the players who really want to play and those that don't. I think we kind of went through this with Pelini, we had players who wanted Pelini and players who didn't and thus a divided room. One thing is for certain we never had this when Osborne was coach, the team was totally united and not divided.

Edited: The difference is winning and knowing a Head Coach is committed to winning and not as much interested in playing favorites.

To further this, I've always been of the school that a Head Coach making a QB change in mid-game is clearly defined by that coaches commitment to winning.

Osborne, on many occassions, sat his starting QB down in the 3rd quarter when the offense was sputtering, for whatever reason. Sometimes after a couple of series he re-inserted the starter and most of the time it lead to winning.

Just in recent years, we don't have to look any farther back than to Clemson and Alabama.

Dabo Sweeney benched his 2 year starter, Kelly Bryant, and inserted true freshman Trevor Lawrence. It paid huge dividends for Clemson and Dabo.

At halftime of the national championship game, Saban benched Jalen Hurts and inserted Tua who then led Alabama to the National title.

I'm not suggesting either Purdy or Smothers is better than CT, likely neither is. But, there can be times where a change in QB is what is needed to get the team to respond. Sometimes it might work, other times it may not.

It all boils down to the commitment to winning by the Head Coach. If its good enough for great, highly successful coaches like Devaney, Osborne, Sweeney, and Saban it sure the hell should have been good enough for Frost.

At a minimum it sends a message to the team that the guy calling the shots is willing to change the offensive leader to his backup in order to try to find a way to win a game.

I felt like Thompson was off in the second half against northwestern. Otherwise, he’s played pretty well the rest of the way. Do you sit a guy if he’s playing well?

The only way you sit Thompson under these circumstances is if you have a plan in place already communicated that the backup will get a series.

That’s my opinion.

CT has played well other than the 1st half 7-7 tie with North Dakota. NU, for whatever reason was missing a spark they somehow managed to find in the second half with 31 points.

I have used this name on here for almost 20 years as a tribute to the greatest Husker announcer of all time. As pointed out above, there is no "jr." in the name, that is a ranking based upon number of posts. This is why I don't post much anymore, there is always some prick like you trying to stir up a controversy.

You say you aren't calling for a QB change, but only provided recent examples of QB changes to defend your point.

The back up QBs at Alabama last year at a combined 24 passing attempts and 15 rushing attempts, in 15 games.

The fact is most teams don't know what the back up QB will do until they are thrown into the fire. Playing a QB in mop up duty against either beaten down defenders or back up defenders of a crappy team doesn't really prepare them for anything or prove they will be ready.

I simply do not see your point in this discussion. Having a back up QB ready, when you have played 3 closely contested games simply isn't plausible. What if you inserted the back up in a game, just to give him reps, where you are tied or up 3 and the back up throws a pick and you lose? It appears you are only looking at the good that may come from playing the backup and not the bad.

Either way, good discussion. Have a good evening

Smothers came in against Georgia Southern and immediately put the ball on the turf. He was saved by a play review and about a nano second of his right knee.
While I get that CT may well get injured and not be able to play for a stretch I don’t know that we want to be putting smothers on the field more now.

we’d be jeopardizing games we have a chance of winning now for the possibility of not losing a game we might have to play at a disadvantage in the future.

Sure but I don’t generally agree with your approach. College football coaches generally play the best QB on hand. If they are winning big they send in the backups. Or if they are a good enough team that the other ten guys can cover up for the drop off in play they might test out the number two to see what he has.

The insurance you are looking to buy with extra experience for the backups makes sense if you are Tom Osborne and you are trying to go from 9 wins to ten, or ten to 12 and a latent injury kept you from a perfect season.

three win Nebraska teams under frost don’t meet any of those criteria. We’d be better served playing our quality qb and getting those around him to play better, or even looking to the other side of the ball and getting the starters to hold a glorified high school team under 40, than to worry about what the drop off is from CT to purdy.

there are first second and third order effects and tweaking the backup qb experience isn’t anywhere on that list.

Agree, good discussion despite our different take.

I'm NOT calling for a QB change Tuco. I may have done a poor job explaining what I meant. I intended to say that TO WOULD occassionally replace the starter with the backup when the offense was sputtering.

It didn't mean he was replacing the starter, he said sometimes a QB standing on the sideline a couple series helped the QB see what the defense was doing.

If I were only looking "at the good that may come from playing a backup and not the bad", do you think I would have pointed out Vedral, Bunch and Smothers? We all seen they were backups for a reason.

All 3 had their chance, and none advanced their position and fans were not calling for them to replace Martinez. Overall, it was a lousy QB room.

I've seen no reason why CT is not still a solid #1 guy. We can all just hope CT continues to play well and avoid injury.

Have a good one.

Wow! So now if ANY player fumbles or throws an interception that player is now a liability & shouldn’t play again. What about a receiver that has drops in a game? Is he a liability too?

I think context matters. CT was playing pretty well. If you’re interested in getting smothers general experience and he’s doing ok then ok. If he comes into a tight game and basically immediately blows it, maybe we should reconsider at that moment in time.

I'm not saying smothers should never see the field again.

Osborne sat starters when he had the lead or the starter got a bit banged up. If the other team started gaining momentum he'd reinsert the starters to maintain the point gap because rankings back then looked at point gaps.
