Pepsi costs $6 because people will pay it.The Athletics arm race is multifaceted. This is why it costs $6 to buy a Pepsi at the stadium.
Speaking of drinks, the Michigan legislature approved sale of beer at the MU and MSU stadiums. Their research (correct or not) concluded it actually was safer for them to sell beer in the stadium because prohibiting those sales led to too many fans getting juiced up in the pregame festivities because they knew they couldn't get it in the stadium. I'm sure though the beer will have a hefty price. But the schools will add to their home game profits. The athletics arms race is multifaceted. This is why it costs $6 to buy a Pepsi at the stadium.

Beamer, Benz, or BentleyA luau and beach yoga at sunset in Hawaii. A guided snorkeling tour in Puerto Rico. Ax throwing in Texas. Tickets to Disney World and Broadway shows. Luxury hotels in Paris and London. Chilled lobster, seafood towers and Delmonico steaks back home in New Brunswick.
Even as Rutgers University athletics continues to run up tens of millions of dollars in annual operating deficits, it shows little restraint when spending on extravagances for its athletes, coaches and recruits.
