Well fans have always indirectly funded college athletes legally in a limited way through providing enough money to colleges to offer scholarships and limited stipends. And of course there have always been the cheaters funding college athletes under the table in illegal says.

I wondered how long it would be before fans could basically pay salaries to star athletes. Looks like with NIH, that day has arrived. Unless there's new rules put into place to "level" the playing field it looks like no holds barred for the present.

Top team advantages??? Coaching. More money here won’t change a thing.
I agree that coaching is the number one key to success. But it's also naive to think that ability to recruit the best athletes isn't important as well. And that's what NIH does, it allows you to offer a financial incentive to get the best athletes. Whether we like it or not, that's the situation. And ability for a school to get the best athletes is also a factor in attracting the best coaches to that school.

Frost has been in the top 25% of the B1G recruiting every year with the exception of the most current class. He has failed to manage, coach, and develop better talent than most teams we play. Another step better of athletes with our poor coaching won’t make much difference.

Nope
That's not what colleges sports is about. If someone wants to offer them something for playing. So be it.

But fans shouldn't be expected too.

We don't even do that for pro sports.

Recruiting.
2018 #21 (6 4*, 18 3*)
2019 #17 (7 4*, 21 3*)
2020 #20 (10 4*, 15 3*)
2021 #20 (4 4*, 16 3*)

Prior to this year, all 4 years NU was in the top 21 Recruiting classes nationally.

Which 4* left between 2018 and 2020: 14 7 offense 7 defense

Where are the Top 20 finishes? Where are the winning seasons?

What is the common denominator?

So you're implying we don't need to try to recruit any good athletes because it's hopeless? Is that what you're saying?

I'm not answering for Big Red but if I went 12 times a year for 4 straight years to a nice restaurant, they kept serving me prime cuts of steak that keep coming out raw or burned,
I wouldn't blame the prime cuts of meat, but I might be willing to pay a couple more bucks if they fired the person who kept burning the steaks and hired a higher quality cook.

In the real world, I'd be a former customer.

Not at all. But with our head coach, you can bring in Bama recruits, but he won’t have Bama results.

Ohio State and State Penn are already doing the same thing nimrod.
If Minnesota does it, I'd drop dead before I contributed a nickel to it.

I like how the last 2 full years have gone on the field. So I'm a fan at the moment. But that could change at any time. I have ZERO INTEREST in watching sports during any year when my team isn't good. F them all.

Hmmm….Let’s consider the return on investment their fans will get versus our recent performance???

If I had to write a check to the US Govt or this opportunity based on ROI, I’d have to think about it.

Recruiting services over rates players that go to schools that have big recruiting fan filllowngs. (Hey he had an offer from northern iowa and South Dakota but now has an offer from Nebraska and was bumped to 3 stars ). Mathematically that creates a biased system that makes us look higher than we are.

It's funny to me that some fans are so anti-NIH. Nobody is forcing anybody to contribute one red cent to NIH. If some diehard fans want to do it, that's their choice. If some more casual/fair weather fans don't want to do it, that's also their choice. No problem, each to their own.

IMO we should just be glad that NIH makes fan contributions legal now for all schools as opposed to the rampant historical fan cheating at some schools in the past.

If I don't pay for play, then I can't get pissed when the team doesnt look good? How much do I need to pay? How much of it is going to the players? How is my investment split between ownership?

I'm laughing at the irony of a NIL donation appeal on the board for "the poors"

You're preaching to the folks who can't or are unwilling to even pony up $9.95 a month. The ultimate group of bandwagon fans.

NU needs to create something like the "stock sales" of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers shares are essentially worthless, but I'd expect them to be slightly more tangible "ownership" to the average Husker fan.

I'm old enough to remember when an additional 5-cent cigarette tax in the 70s's funded the construction of the Bob Devaney Center. My grandfather always said he personally paid for a row of seats.

And coaches decide who to bring in. There's no sense in taking away giving to your church or favorite charity in order to throw money in a giant giveaway pot.

Or we choose to spend our money elsewhere. A fool and his money are soon parted.
