Appears underwhelming to say the least. Fred needs to win this year and I doubt this guy is bringing in any high profile recruits with him.

It does appear underwhelming, but probably not a lot of top assistants wanting to come here right now....It sounds like Fred is bringing him in to coordinate the defense, as that is what he did at South Alabama and we know Fred doesn't coach defense. He will basically fill Doc's old role.

Fred says he "has a lot of connections to get us involved with high-level recruits.” I'm not sure what evidence he is basing that statement on.

How many top assistant coaches were lining up to come here knowing it Fred doesn't get it done this year....everyone would be out a job?

May be underwhelming....but maybe the best available given the situation.

I like it. The best thing we could do to win more games with the roster that we have is to actually play defense. Since we can't compete man-to-man in the post with most B1G teams lets see what this guy's system can accomplish.

Read his background on another site. Runs the defense and teaches post players. He's developed players at other stops and recruited a few good players.

We gotta be a little realistic here. Our program is in shambles. Up and comers like this might be the best we can do for now. On paper I don't mind it. The only knock i see is that he's from a small school.

As we all know we need defense and post help on this team and he would seem to fit the bill.

We don't need recruits, we need some discipline on this team. If this guy can provide that, it's an upgrade in my book.

bingo. don't have to be talented to play hard. hard nosed teams typically over perform throughout the season. teams that aren't motivated to box out or play defense typically go 10-22

You're saying we couldn't have used a 4 star center or point guard to follow a new assistant coach hire to NU? How about a transfer who could help us immediately? While I agree that playing better defense could help, I'm not buying that a white guy with his mediocre resume is going to be able to get more out of the team on defense than what we've seen. We'll see. I think this hire was one where somebody Doc knew recommended him for the job and the list of applicants was short.

Yeah, well, you can't coach talent, you have to have talent to be able to move quicker than the other guy, shoot better, jump higher, etc. You could have any team at any level "play hard" and at the end of the season not win games unless they have some talented athletes.

It's not an either or proposition. I guess the only thing that would be better is if they were all from Nebraska where every kids work hard.

His connection to Antonio Reeves doesn't look too bad right off the bat.

Very interesting choice. Howard was up to his eyeballs in the serious Donnie Tyndall rules violations at Southern Miss. Only by (eventually) telling the truth did Howard avoid a major penalty. Tyndall is still serving a ten-year show-cause order.
Sounds like the kind of guy we need
