Shawon Dunston is oddly one of my favorite old school Cubs. Dude had an absolute cannon of an arm playing shortstop and would often take his time throwing to first only to send it four rows deep into the stands. Anyone on the first base side better bring a glove to the game to prevent getting killed at least once a game. He also would famously get in crazy hot hitting streaks and go from hitting .253 to .309 in a three week period. The fans in the bleachers would display the "Shawon-o-meter" and adjust his daily batting average after every hit. It was great fun.

Old school baseball was stupid. A completely contactless sport where you start fights with the pitcher for hitting you... only to disregard all of that and try to end the catchers career in the most brutal way possible. Don't worry though, he wore a mask and a quarter inch thick piece of foam so it's cool. Oh and the umps are more corrupt in their officiating than any other sport, including basketball lmao.
Once in a while, a good old fashioned fight at home plate is pretty cool though. Kyle Farnsworth did a motor vehicle homicide on opposing pitcher Paul Wilson on this play. Hilarious. Farnsworth had a 100 mph fastball with no movement on it so he was pretty easy to hit. He also loved to fight. He actually played defensive end in semi-pro football after his baseball days and was pretty good. No kidding. Should have known it long before.

But the best is probably Greg Ellena from Miami. Dude hit bombs and I don't think he ever played a day in the majors.
I believe he was nothing more than a back up catcher his whole career at Miami, until the starter got hurt late in the year. I remember him hitting one dead center at Rosenblatt back in 1985 that cleared the 420 sign.
Dave Winfield is one of the greatest athletes of all time. Was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, San Diego Padres, and the Minnesota Vikings. I think he was a pitcher in college.
Amazing athlete. There wasn't anything he couldn't do.
And yes, he was the CWS Player of the Year as a pitcher.
Mel Allen's This Week in Baseball is the best sports highlights show of all time. Sad that FOX ever saw fit to apply the name to its crapfest version.

I gotta go with Howard Cosell's Monday Night Football recap of the Sunday games. And all in slow motion mind you.

Those were great too. Especially for those of us who only had access to Sunday games on two networks: the Cowboys Broadcasting System and Nothing but Broncos & Chiefs.
But man, they packed a lot of great information and highlights into This Week in Baseball.
I got to attend a reunion cocktail party for one of those World Series A teams out in Oakland several years ago. Met Rollie, Sal Bando, Joe Rudi, Blue Moon Odom,Dick Green etc. Reggie was there but was too busy with his entourage. Joe Rudi and Rollie, and Dick Green are super guys. We just mailed a card to Rollie for him to autograph for my brother's birthday. It was just supposed to be players but one of the team invited a couple of us to come along. Other than Reggie, they're pretty much regular guys that you might find at your local golf course.
That’s cool good for you. in 1973 I was 11 dad and I had a small bet on the World Series, I was a big fan of the Mets and Tom Seaver dad was pulling for the A’s great series but I lost. Looking back at those A’s teams of the early 1970’s I was a little naive to bet against them
