5.5 3* recruit with offers from Pitt, Iowa, BC and UNC. Three years with Whipple and he finished 3rd in the Heisman balloting. But also, the fact that the starting Oline was composed of 4 5th year players and 1 4th year player didn't hurt. Rivals rankings for the Peach Bowl starters were 5.7, 5.8, 5.4, 5.7 and 5.5 left to right

To compare Olines, some of the names that might be on the topline for NU this fall:
Anthony 5th year, 5.5
Nouili 4th, 5.4
Corcoran 3rd, 6.0
Teddy P. 2nd, 5.9
Williams 6th, NR
Benhart 4th, 5.9
Banks 4th, 5.7
Lutovsky 2nd, 5.7
With coaching, there is a competent Oline in there somewhere. Maybe a guy like Benhart levels up in response the a new coach.

One of the radio talking heads say that the coaching staff is expecting good things from Lutovsky. They think he's going to be very good. So you've got 4 guys who started games coming back other than Lutovsky. You would think that Raiola can make that work.

Actually, six guys on that list have started games. I didn’t put Hixson on the list nor Piper, and those guys have started games. If Raiola has something Austin didn’t in terms of coaching, there is some game experience to work with in the room.

I see some of those guys and I think even Barney could have made them at least solid O linemen. I don't think it's rocket science. I think it was very evident to Frost fairly early this last fall that he was going to have to make a change. I believe that he was trying to follow Tom's M.O. by having our O line consultant work with him so he didn't have to fire him. Didn't work. We were markedly better the next week after he was fired IMO.

Only took until fall of year 4 for Frost to figure that out? Very first game of year 1 I knew Austin was in over his head.

For all of the bitching about Cotton, his results clearly exceeded those of his successors.

I’m happy you frame Pickett’s success with the experienced and fairly talented (stars) Off. Line. Too often we treat them in isolation when it’s a symbiotic relationship.

Pitt was lucky in that they had he sweet combo of a well coached experienced quarterback and an experienced talented offense line. That combo get you a lot of wins.

You bring up a few good points:

1. It took Whipple 3 years before his QB made a significant jump. Pickett was a 1 year starter at Pitt prior to Whip even getting there, so he was used to the speed of the game and being a QB1 etc..Picketts stats during Whipples first two years really didnt change much from his pre Whipple season. AKA he didnt really make any type of positive jump in his game. AKA Whipple is not a quick fix coach. Whipple will NEED to be a quick fix coach in both his OC and QB coaching this year, cuz he has 1 year to make it work or he is out of a job. At Whipples previous OC stops, he was also not a quick fix coach. He will again need to be in a one year time frame, which he simply has never been able to do up to this point.

2. The 2nd issue here is the O line which you said was important, and we have a few guys injured right now who we hope will get better and be able to play...but another large issue is we hired an O line coach with Zero P5 college experience on his resume and who is also kinda green an inexperienced overall. So he is going to have to adjust to the differeences between the pro game and the college game as his guys wont have nearly as much time to "get it" as his guys in the pros did, cuz they can work on that stuff after practice where college guys have..ya know classes and studying..plus spending time chasing that $$$ for NIL..

Seems like a tough hill to climb in order to improve everything enough to win enough games to get another year...

I think SF is a narcissistic asshat who thinks he can makeup for the deficiencies of his staff. Clearly he can't. Also he in no way resembles TO.

If Teddy is physically ready, I could see an early OL of Teddy LT, Nouilli LG, Corcoran C, Lutovsky RG, and someone other than Benhart at RT.
