We were at a family gathering over the holidays and found out from listening to an in-law this is a sensitive topic for many.

So I think it was Andrew Dice Clay who did a bit about how it was more "okay" to talk about how/when/where you **** your wife/girl than it was to chat about money or politics...Sadly, I think he was right.

It’s tricky. There is a difference between making a large amount of money and being wealthy.

I rarely - if ever- hear wealthy people talk about how much they make. They are usually very open, though, to share information on business and investments. The bulk of their assets are usually appreciating assets.

On the flip side, it’s not uncommon to hear a W2 wage earner talk about being paid an amount they think is a lot of money. Their assets are typically tied up in depreciating assets.

Typically if you need to talk about how much money you make, you are trying to make up for some (or several) other inadequacies.

always seems to be like that..

poor people flaunt money trying to look rich, and rich people suppress outward signs of money trying to look poor.. there is always an angle, and so whatever is on the surface, is usually an indication of things being the other way around.

My wife and I make enough money enough to live comfortably. But we do not make enough to afford $50k per year to afford to put her mother in a nursing home.

Whoever said "money can't buy happiness" doesn't know what they are talking about.

OP is joking, but makes me think of MiL who still even after 20 years of marriage thinks my wife's finances are her business whatsoever. "Oh got your winter bonus? How much?". Finally does not ask this specific but did at one time.

Whatever amount you make, live below it. Life is stressful enough without financial woes.

I am a 1%er earning $41.21 per hour plus bennies. I also have unlimited laser printing privileges and do not finance my waterbed, all while having an apartment with a fountain view. All thanks to Coach Letterman and his principles.

I was friends with a very rich family once. They owned farmland (lots) they rented out and owned buildings, etc. Like Nikk said, other than having a Cadillac and Lincoln in the modest 2-car garage, you would have never known outwardly the extent of their wealth. I learned from their circle most wealthy people never say they are rich or wealthy or loaded, but occasionally mention they are "fortunate". I also learned rich people have an outfit for everything, tennis, golf, gardening, you name it. A big time suck of that family's day was changing into the appropriate outfit for the current activity at hand.

I have never felt better dressing like a hobo than I do now. Thanks NS!

Sadly, I can't provide any evidence beyond the poor looks.

I take exception to the put down of the hobo. There is a huge difference between a hobo and a bum. At least the hobo works for a living. pun was intended. (I'm from the Hobo capital of the world).
