I've been following Husker recruiting all my life. Been on this board since 2004. I used to be able to tell you recruits names, HS, etc, etc. Now with the transfer portal I don't even know who's on our team anymore. Every day it's this QB is now in the portal. This guy is entering the portal. In all honesty I don't even follow signing day or recruiting anymore. If we get this high profile player I'm like Ok. Great. But he will be gone in a year or two so why get excited? Maybe I'm just apathetic because our team has been **** for so long. Maybe it's just getting older I don't give two ***** about following a bunch of entitled kids on Twitter. Coaches getting huge buyouts for doing nothing. Coaches changing teams every year after saying they're committed to a school. Every year watching Bama, Georgia and Clemson in the title game. Apathy has set in. Just win and maybe I'll get pumped for NU football and basketball. Until then. Just kinda over it. GBR maybe again one day?.?....

I used to get geeked about recruiting, but don't anymore. I don't care about how anyone did in winter conditioning or at the spring game. Do your work on game day and get known. WAY too many kids have washed out.

The Rivals of the world can only blow so much smoke up our *** until we say enough.

I don't care who's going to be the next in Suh or David until they actually put together a body of work.

Yup. I don't care what 4 or 5 star HS stud did in HS. Most of those guys go to a school and if they're not named starter from day one they transfer. What if Brook had done that? He never would have had his chance to shine at NU when Frazier went down. Probably wouldn't have won a National title that year. The portal and NIL money has changed the game. And not in a good way.

I'm kind of in the same spot, but I don't think it's due to the portal (at least in my case). I joined the site in 2006. I've basically stopped watching or following college football about 3-5 weeks in each of the last 6 or 7 seasons, but it's because Nebraska has been horrible, and it gets tiresome watching the team make the same mistakes that are never corrected over entire seasons.

I used to be able to tell you who the Heisman finalists were, where they were drafted, all sorts of random college football trivia type stuff. Now I just tune it out and honestly couldn't even tell you which teams have won many of the recent national championships, but I could still tell you year by year who won in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

Me too. I was always college ball first. NFL second. But that's flipped. May have something to do with my Packers playing at a high level as opposed to my Huskers looking like a clown show circus. Be great if the Huskers would pull their heads out of their asses sometime soon.

I take notice of when we have a good class with highly ranked recruits but that's it. Used to go to recruiting dinners and such. Now I realize it's not a good use of my time. Also not willing to discuss or make arguments for a kid who's never suited up for us based on what he did in high school.

When recruiting is emphasized, I pay a lot of attention to recruiting. However, it seemed pretty obvious early on in the year that the recruiting wasn't going so hot this year so I admittedly haven't paid as close of attention as years prior. I will say that once they hired Mickey Joseph, my interest in recruiting came back as he's actually offering SEC caliber recruits (thank god). Yeah they're probably not going to get the 5 star they offered but at least they offered rather than give up without trying.

If Mickey can land the next Justin Jefferson and Jamarr Chase I'll get excited for NU football.

I use to read Street and Smith's like a bible back in the 80's. I could tell you where most of our players we're from. Now it's a combo of me being older and not so interested, the fact that we've sucked for too long, and that it's been the Alabama show. Bottom line , Nebraska football isn't holding my interest anymore.

college football has fundamentally changed with nil (pay to play) and the portal (free agency). sure, it's easy to say: well players are just getting some of that coaching money, well deserved.

the problem with that rationalization is that it leaves out the third pillar, the fans who fund the enterprise.

college football fans in large part don't follow the nfl closely, nor with the loyalty they show their school.

my sense is that the more the college game drifts towards the league model the more fragile fan loyalty will become as shown in this thread. we may be left with watching it on tv instead.

Yup. Lindys, Street and Smith's, Athlon. Every year I'd buy my Husker bible and read it cover to cover. Now, by the time it's printed half the players are gone. Just hard to get excited about a clown show every year of games we shoulda won.

NIL and transfer portal are quickly becoming a splash of cold water waking us up to the fact that the sport will never be the same (for better or worse). The college game of yesteryear is quickly dissolving, forming into something totally different.

I'm pretty sure we've offer 5 star players every year. Even without Joseph.

It has become the semi-pros. We take pride when local kids become good players on a national stage, but if we suck interest will fall way way off. The influence of money has degraded the product a lot. It's stupid that I'm even calling it a product. It is what it is

Girls VB are still winners. Good luck to Coach Cook and the ladies tomorrow. GBR!! Men's baseball too.
I think we'll get past Pitt. They're good, but not particularly tall and their level of competition is nowhere near as good as ours.

But then Wisky or Louisville in the finals. Yikes.

Best scenario. NU beats Louisville in the title game. Cook announces his retirement at the same time Louisville coach Dani Busboom announces she's coming back to Coach NU. Lol

I'm pretty close to apathetic myself. I'm a recruiting junkie, but it's plain to see that we're now 2nd or 3rd tier in the recruiting world. The top programs are still all in on the top HS talent, but clearly not us. We're digging in the scrap pile for transfers with the rest of the mediocre programs while trying to convince ourselves that it doesn't matter that the top HS four players never even considered NU.

I agree with the observations about enjoying college sports far less than I used to, but I don't blame it on the players. Players didn't demand ridiculous contract extensions for coaches that mean absolutely nothing when it's time for them to move on to something better, or time for them to get fired. Players didn't pursue weird-*** conference realignments that wrecked longtime rivalries in the name of pursuing TV sets.

You can't turn college sports into a filthy, multi-billion dollar business in which a bunch of old --cks get insanely rich, then expect the players to act like it's still 1977.

That's another one that is destroying CFB. Mega conferences. NU in the Big 10. CU in Pac 10. Texass, Mizzou and OU in the SEC?? Wtf happened to the Big 8?? Oh right. Greed and Texass!! Just ridiculous.

My interest in Husker football has dropped dramatically in recent years. The reason for this it twofold: 1) the product on the field being poor; and 2) too many other things going on these days in the real world that are far more important that have my attention.

If we had a better product I might care more, but that's not going to happen (at least not on any consistent level) until we get people in charge who understand the issues the team faces on a fundamental level - namely that we will NEVER be able to consistently beat out schools like Bama, OU, Texas, OSU, etc., for pro-style QBs, WR and OL. T.O. understood this.

I think this is the issue much more than the portal or NIL. If we were relevant we would be eating up recruiting & portal movement info.

This is so on the money. I felt an allegiance to Husker players because they were for all intents and purposes committed to us and Nebraska to them. But I am older and moved away because we live in a more transient society. I realize now that my daughter is a sophomore at UNL that I am never playing for the Huskers and in fact that these kids (and yeah they are kids) are as immature and under pressure as she is. Furthermore when I was growing up, Nebraska was one of the few schools on TV often; now every school is on TV which dilutes the product. The combination of UNL sucking now for 20 years and my getting older and having different perspectives means that I will take a little glimmer of hope when we get the Tom Lemming Conference Championship Trophy but it does not move the needle beyond that any longer.

I sort of feel like this in a way. I bought way more Packer gear this year than Husker gear, but just can't quit my team and never will, but I have really got back into the NFL again and it does help the Packers are lookin solid.

I am pretty much with everyone ITT as you can tell. Was a premium member a long freakin time until a few months ago when I canceled… no sense in paying for recruiting coverage when I don’t give a sheet. Now back to the free board for me. Don’t follow spring ball now, won’t buy any Husker gear. Admin clearly are idiots.
I’ll see how USC does with Riley. Other than that I just follow the Bucs because of Brady.
Hopefully we will have a good team again before I die.
