more like a minor league system. The best players at lower levels leave to see how they'll do at the next level or at a program that is performing at a higher level right now. It's kind of like the LeBron & KD syndrome where players just want to be on the same team with the other best players rather than compete against them and make their current school better.

I hate the portal.

Lower level schools will love and hate this. They will get good players out of high school that big schools ignored because they filled the roster with transfers. But also if those players turn into Cam Ward types they will transfer up in 2 years

Kids have always had this opportunity thru recruiting, portal adds another layer to it but kids have been able to play on same team if they so desired for a very long time. Bottom line, if the kid(s) are good and they have options, then they already had the power to make this happen. Having said all that, I hate the portal and NIL. Working your way up and commitment are long lost values for many.

It will go both ways. The players who couldn't cut it at the major programs will transfer down to lower levels, so it will even itself out.

this goes against the narrative that rico's time is now!

do players want to:
1. sit on the bench, on a team with a good record
2. get actual playing time, with a team with a lesser record

Scouring the portal will become the better method of recruiting. Teams will have film of athletes playing against college opponents and once they transfer, they can't transfer again. Better than recruiting projects out of HS who may jump just when they were getting good. Portal guys are the new juco. But with better credentials.

There are plenty of Power 5 transfers playing at winnings programs in the real playoffs right now in FCS. There always was this fairly easy downward mobility to FCS, but the sheer volume of players transferring now that are not finding homes at Power 5 schools means many will go FCS. Most also find that actually playing and winning is fun no matter where you are, even in smaller stadiums.

I hate it personally, but am all for it right now if that's what it takes to win.

Also hate it. BUT there's only so much room at the Alabamas of the world and there's plenty of room for a program like Nebraska (and dozens of others) to make noise in the Top 25. Just be competent, which is apparently a lot harder than it sounds.
