OK, Question on New Offensive Staff

Maybe I just missed all the new staff news, but is this correct or am I missed something?

Becton - Hold over TE coach
Joseph - New WR coach and recruiting coordinator (already announced)
Whipple - New OC/QB coach (likely TBA as soon as tomorrow)
Raiola - New OL coach (likely TBA as soon as tomorrow)
Busch - Probable ST coach (?)
Brown - Probable RB coach (?)

Has Brown been announced as RB coach? Is Busch likely? Both already on the staff.

Obviously it would be 1 more full time assistant than is allowed if ST were to become an official assistant. So does that mean that the ST coach will remain a staffer but not an official assistant coach?

Maybe dumb but maybe Scott can take ST (on field of course) with Busch (booth/meeting room)

I don't see why Dawson wouldn't continue to be the official ST coach on the field during gamedays with Busch handling all the ST coaching/recruiting duties at other times. I think that's the way some other P5 schools are doing it.

Because as an analyst he wouldn't be allowed to coach or recruit. Only reason he can recruit now is Nebraska is under limit of coaches so they were allowed to "activate" approved personnel but as each new coach is hired an "activated" person must come off the road

At some point, if he isn't on the active coaching staff, no more recruiting

I was wondering that about Brown too, Since he was on a recruiting trip to see the number 2 rated running back...

Why would a kid listen to him if he wasn't the coach or knew who it was to sell him on the idea of Nebraska.I think Brown would be a good choice as a Running Back Coach,, Since he has put people in to the NLF at that position.

Brown went with Frost and Joseph. They weren't necessarily selling him on Brown being the future.

Well yes he can't go out to visit kids at their schools/homes if he's not a full time assistant BUT he can analyze film until the cows come home and make decisions/choices. And the kids can see him during their on campus visits.

He's already been doing that for a year...his value is actual recruiting but if not active then he is wasted

he might not be able to coach or recruit IF he stays as an analyst but he can watch from the booth and relay to an active coach what he sees. I would be surprised if some "analysts" aren't also helping with play calls.

I don't know but my guess is that Busch becomes more in charge of ST duties, basically the coach in everything but name and gameday field presence. He can be active in analyzing film for recruiting purposes and helping to make decisions. No, he can't go out on the road.

So if Frost had Mickey who's from the state and him why would they need a 3rd coach who isnt going to be his coach?

Brown will remain on staff probably in the role he had previously. He'll be a familiar face and Ron Brown's reputation nationally as a recruiter always used to be really good. Why not have him go along. No limit on the number of assistants.

Why do they sometimes take the entire staff that's allowed to travel for an in home visit? Because they want to impress the recruit. More Coaches = Bigger Impression. Plus I think Ron Brown enjoys those kind of trips. And I suspect he will be the RB coach next year.

Still think Brown will be RB coach and no full time ST coach...only way that changes (full time ST) is if one of the D coaches leaves and Chins takes a position group, just my OPINION of course

Well I'd disagree on that comment. The front 7 on defense were pretty good this year IMO and Dawson was part of that. I like the defensive staff and it wasn't touched.

Now I'd agree that special teams were a disaster and I think that's why they'll give those responsibilities over to Busch.

I wonder if Beckton is under consideration for a position at Florida or Miami, and Frost is waiting to see if he leaves? If he does, the that could open a spot for a full-time Special Teams coach. It seems like the WR, OL, and RB coach could all help coach TEs.

Sounds like Beckton and Fisher might be being considered for the U. Both would suck to lose.

I pretty sure I read where Dawson doesn't really want to coordinate ST.

I could see a lot of moving parts. If someone else (like say Dawson or Beckton) leaves, I could see something like Busch coaching safties and Dan Jackson coaching CB's and they split ST.

So, this was posted in a diff thread but:
With Tuioti all but gone, move Dawson to DL, hire Busch to coach OLB/ST, have Chins help at OLB. Hire a full-time RB coach. Although I like the idea of the guy from Pitt. Would have instant chemistry with Whipple.

Not dumb. If Frost took on special teams with Busch, his ego would demand that more practice field time and attention is put on it. Special teams would have to improve. Suddenly a player wouldn’t be returning punts only to improve his draft stock. And it would hopefully keep him from clouding up and complicating the offense even more than it already will be.

I’d rather Frost stay away from Special Teams. I don’t want to see the Special Teams get too cute. Best thing is to let Frost be the CEO and face of the program.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such a concerted effort to ensure a head coach does as little coaching as possible.
We are going to try to win in spite of our head coach rather than because of him.
I wonder if he is even going to be allowed on the field during practices or will they try distract him with “CEO” duties during this time.

Ok let me ask you this…What coaching has he really done in four years?

Throw out his first year because the kids were adjusting to a new scheme but the last three years were regression for the Offense and Special Teams has never been addressed. I mean the record speaks for itself.

Good grief, of course there is coaching going on. The quality of it can be questioned and perhaps the organization as well. Frankly, no one here is at practice so I have no clue how anyone would know.

It reminds me of a parent who called when something allegedly happened in their child's classroom and they want me to do something about it or want more clarification. My first response is, well, there are two of us that were not present and have zero information except for what we have second hand which may or may not be accurate. The best course of action is for the parent to contact the teacher and if they still have concerns, then get back to me. I rarely had a parent get back to me. The point is WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON unless we are there! We can see results, that is it.

Truth is, he should have been let go and this little compromise/experiment likely won't last very long if he is allowed to continue as before.

You could have just written the last sentence and the part about questioning the quality of coaching which is the message I was conveying.

I don’t have to ‘be present there’ to see what kind of coaching the Offense and Special Teams is receiving. The record speaks for itself and the coaching down there for those units hasn’t been good enough the last four years.
