Gretna v Westside

So somebody smarter than me want to explain why the clock didn’t stop after the Westside penalty and basically took about 2-3 chances away from Gretna at the end of the half???

I didn't watch but explain the situation and I'll try to explain it....if they got it right or wrong.

Penalty occurred on a play that ended inbounds. Since it wasnt a deadball deal they run the clock at the whistle

but in the last two minutes of a quarter if the defense has a flag the offense has the choice to either run the clock or start it at the play correct.

Refs should have asked Gretna coaches if they wanted to run clock, but didn’t. So that’s where the mistake was made. However my question for the experts is: Gretna snapped the ball on first down after the tackle inbounds and Flores spiked it on the play on which the penalty was called, so it seems to me it should have been a deadball on the spiked ball. I have not before seen a play blown dead for an illegal participation. You usually run the play and team then takes the play or the penalty. So the penalty came on a deadball (incomplete pass) didn’t it? Why would you go back to the prior play, which was the one where Gretna was tackled inbounds?

no the play never happened, you don't let the play go with 12 men on the field for safety purposes, but they should have asked the Gretna coach if he wanted to start the clock, they didn't and they screwed up in my opinion.

Yeah this would have been a real sore spot if Gretna had lost that game. They would have gotten some points before the half

If it was assessed as a five yard penalty, then it occurred prior to the snap...if they assessed a 15 yard penalty, that means the officials didn't catch 12 men until after the play started and it is illegal participation and the play happened.

The coaches are also accountable to let the coaches know or ask their options...

Prior to the game, the officials meet with the coaches and they discuss that penalties will be assessed and asks if the coach wants obvious penalties enforced/declined and they should let the line judge or head linesman know if they want anything other than the obvious.

The officials should have asked and at least one on this crew should have got on the OTO (official to official radios) and ask the white hat if that option was given to the coach....Usually the back judge in is charge of knowing all the timing nuances in high school football since they handle the play clock.
