Refs should have asked Gretna coaches if they wanted to run clock, but didn’t. So that’s where the mistake was made. However my question for the experts is: Gretna snapped the ball on first down after the tackle inbounds and Flores spiked it on the play on which the penalty was called, so it seems to me it should have been a deadball on the spiked ball. I have not before seen a play blown dead for an illegal participation. You usually run the play and team then takes the play or the penalty. So the penalty came on a deadball (incomplete pass) didn’t it? Why would you go back to the prior play, which was the one where Gretna was tackled inbounds?
