Smothers redshirt gone

Didn't make sense to me. I don't know why Masker or Harberg couldn't have gone in for a couple of snaps at the end of the first half.
IF Adrian comes back, Smothers could redshirt next year so he would still only be a sophomore after Adrian was gone. IF Adrian doesn't come back, Smothers would have 3 more years to play barring an injury in which case it could be 4. That's enough. I think the thinking was that Adrian might not be able to come in and we were deep in our territory. We've heard in the past that these types of scenarios are talked about with backup QBs in advance so Frost knows what they want to do. I have no doubt that Masker could have handed off quite nicely. That said, they ran zone read for Smothers and the kid has the potential to make big plays with his feeet.

Just being a smart ***. I assumed he meant Martinez but mixed up his number with T-Mart.
But yeah I agree... Frost either doesn't think highly of Smothers or was clueless to the fact that it burned his RS. I get that it's unlikely he'd stay six years anyways, but why waste it for such a meaningless moment in the game?
No doubt given Adrian's injury problems this scenario was discussed prior to the game with Smothers. Adrian was playing with an injury once again and there was some doubt that he was going to be able to return to the game. The TV commentator who was on the field during warmups said that Adrian was wincing when he warmed up and that it appeared he was nursing a side injury. My bet would be ribs with how much he gets when he's throwing the ball.
Um no. Smothers would already be in the portal IF he had said that. Smothers thinks he'll be the starter next fall. He's not going anywhere.

Completely irresponsible on Frost's part. Staying or transferring, dude just blew a year of Smothers' eligibility. There's seriously nobody else on offense that could take 2 snaps to run out the clock? Come on, man.

Sorry, you're right. What I meant was he burned a game of his for a meaningless play or two because of an equipment malfunction, if I remember right.
It was the end of the half and he elected to run the ball two times to end it. The equipment manager could have burned his redshirt with those two meaningless plays
Can’t imagine this level of foresight by the staff is surprising. The fact that we haven’t given him more run considering the incredible failure of this season is even less surprising. We should play Martinez in Q1 thru the middle of Q4, then put anyone else in there. Tongue firmly in cheek……kinda.

Kinda think they were gonna run some offense had the 1st qb run had gone for more yards. Is Smothers the back qb? Isn't that who replaces the starter?
Smothers has the kind of speed to take a zone read 50+ and put us in the position to kick a field goal to end the half. Frost said before the game that they were going to let it all hang out and probably take more risks than they would have earlier in the season. I have NO doubt that Smothers was on board with giving up the redshirt option for this year. At the time of Adrian's injury it looked unlikely that he would return according to interviews after the game.
What is even funnier is all of the Husker fans who "like" this Hawkeye troll's posts.
