Fuente's $10 million buyout

Fuente gets $10 million from Virginia Tech since he was fired in November. His buyout dropped to under $8 million after Dec. 1. Virginia Tech clearly decided it was worth the extra buyout money to make a move a couple weeks earlier.

It's interesting seeing all these heralded coaches that fans wanted years ago biting the dust...
Almost like it is one big crapshoot.

His contract might not be officially terminated until after that date OR they agreed with him to fire him now and only have to pay the 8. Details of buyouts are rarely completely public,

I've been saying it for 2 years. When you look back at the names that people lobbied for when we hired Riley, they were all flops in their next job.

This is a really good point. This is why a good/great coach is in such demand. It is also why schools (normal ones, not NU I guess) are fine with rolling the dice again.

Yeah… and ours is literally the shittiest of them all by far and we get a 5th year and maybe an extension… think about that ******** for a while

Shows you how great Bill Moos' list was because rumor had it if Frost wasn't hired, Fuente was next on the list. Yikes.

Kyle Whittingham interviewed, and he was who I wanted. He has not been a flop at Utah.

I'll ask the question... Is Fuente anyone we should consider for OC? I don't know that much about him

Or since the decision has been made, hope they figure it out and fix the issues, so we can start winning.

In general, he has 4 years of OC experience. 2 at illinois state and 2 and TCU (2009-2011) was a qb and running backs coach before, then Head coach from 2012 to now, (memphis and VT).

Doesn't scream home run OC hire, but wtf do I know. He is about the same age as frost, and also played qb in college. (not that that matters)

I do not believe he actually interviewed but he hasn't been an elite coach either. I don't remember anybody promoting Whittingham when we hired Riley. I do remember his name being discussed when we hired Frost. I've watched a fair amount of Whittingham coached games. He seems to be put a pretty good product on the field but I've seen some mind numbingly stupid coaching decisions at crunch time of close games from him. I think he could win 8-9 at NU but I think that would be his ceiling in the B1G. We'll never know.

It would make sense, if this is a model Trev wants to follow, to open up the OC position to whoever Frost wants to hire at any cost and then have the OC (and Frost) hire any other assistant coaches they want at any prices as well.

That 2017 coaching class was all time bad. Best hires ended up being Kelly who is still a ? and Herm Edwards. Everyone else flopped or are floundering.

Some perspective in case folks weren’t aware… VT just canned Fuente, and Frost would need to go 28-4 over the next 32 games just to equal Fuentes record.
I hope people realize why exactly many fans on these boards are not thrilled.
All I can say.. those effin unknown metrics better include 8+ dadgum wins.

yes, if the goal is to match Fuentes' record, which I don't think is important or necessary for him to do going forward.

I don't think he's had any. He's finished first in his division in the Pac 12 a couple of times but he's also had multiple losing conference records. He won the Mountain West in 08.

Nebraska fans want a coach to win conference championships and contend for the playoffs, right? Kyle Whittingham is not a coach that most Nebraska fans want.

Well we'll have to adjust what we're getting in any given coaching search. The only guys who have a proven Bona fide background to get us where we think a blue blood should be are Meyer Saban and Swinney and we aren't getting any of those guys.

Everyone after that is a crapshoot. There's several guys I could think of that could get us to regular 8-9 win type seasons, like Aranda Herman, etc, and while initially good enough if we don't follow that exponential curve in year three you'll be back to the era of kicking out any Jack wad that can't regularly contend for a playoff spot.

It's possible we could get there revamping the offensive staff under Frost rather than hiring Herman but it's certainly more unconventional.
