This is a topic that I'm interested in see what the data shows. How many P5 schools that have won a conference title in the last 5 seasons had a head coach that called plays - offense or defense?

SEC - none. Conference champions were Alabama, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Alabama

Big Ten - none from my understanding since Ryan Day didn't call plays as HC. Conference champions were Ohio State, Ohio State, Ohio State, Ohio State, and Penn State.

ACC - none. Conference champions....Clemson times 5

Big 12 - Lincoln Riley does. Conference champions were Oklahoma times 5

What this shows, IMO, is that you don't want your head coach acting as a coordinator and head coach.

ND's head coach hasn't called plays in years too.

Tom Osborne should have let Frank Solich call plays. We would have been much better.

So all of those SEC coaches are defensive coaches so I wouldn’t expect any of them to call plays. So that leaves you the following 4 coaches who could call plays.

James Franklin
Ryan Day
Lincoln Riley
Dabo Swinney

Half of them do.

How many of the SEC coaches are involved with the defense as much as Frost is with the offense?

I don’t think Orgeron is, but I know for sure that Saban and Smart are very involved with the defensive play calling. They have veto power on every play call, so in essence, if they don’t like the call, they call something else. Might as well call the plays.

What your info shows me is that you hire a defensive minded coach as your HC.
