Not anything new, but important to emphasize: While the disappointment is staggering, and we find ourselves numb to the feeling of what good football may look like, I try to focus on the hard work and dedication these guys put in.
I won’t critique their effort or desire too much (save Adrian’s run out of bounds before the marker on 3rd down).
I really feel terrible that our players have put so much “sweat equity” (Benning) into finding W’s and they’ve found themselves on a losing team, most for their entire collegiate career.
We all get frustrated by the mistakes, but the players want it. Most have done enough to contribute to those W’s. We have enough talent for W’s.
The failure rests on coaching. And to be honest, I won’t even be that bitter at coaches because I don’t question their desire either.
But despite any level of desire, the coaches are the ones paid a lot of money to recruit, develop and have their team prepared to win. This is where things have clearly come up short.
As we look ahead, a few players will surely move on elsewhere, others exhaust their eligibility feeling the sting of those L’s stacking up. They should keep their chin held high if they feel they gave it all they had.
A few players aren’t cut out for success at this level, but there’s plenty of guys on the roster who can contribute to the next chapter. I hope those guys stick around. It’s important to retain as much talent as we can heading into the new coaching era.
For Adrian specifically, he’s a good man and has to endure more than his fair share of the blame. The bottom line is he should not have been put in the position to fail because it’s a coach’s job to have the right guys on the field. I also wonder what a different QB coach could have done to his trajectory or how better OL play could have helped.
It’s a sad ending for Frost’s much anticipated tenure, but I want to applaud the roster of men who’ve made the effort, even if they couldn’t make it happen.
Now let’s put the past behind us and look forward to building something more positive under a new coaching regime.
