I was curious about Gus Mahlzahn's coaching resume, so I decided to do some research today and thought I would share it with all of you.

He would be one of my top coaches for our next head coach. One thing that gives me pause is the no huddle hurry up offense as I think it is a terrible fit for the Big Ten West division.

Head Coaching Career
  • 2012 : Arkansas State
    • Record : 9-3, 75% win percentage
    • Conference Record : 7-1, 87.5% win percentage
  • 2013 – 2020 : Auburn
    • Record : 68-35, 66% win percentage
    • Conference Record : 39-27, 59% win percentage
  • 2021 : UCF
    • Record : 5-3, 62.5% win percentage
    • Conference Record : 3-2, 60% win percentage
  • Combined
    • Record : 82-41, 66.67%
    • Conference Record : 49 – 30, 62% win percentage
    • Conference Championships : 2012, 2013
    • Bowl Record : 2-5, 28.5% win percentage
  • Why this could be a good hire
    • He’s 56 year old, so this may be a destination job for him
    • He has 9 years of head coaching experience, 7 of which were in the best conference in college football
      • Additionally, he coached those 7 years in the same state as the best football coach / team in college football
    • He consistently wins at a 60%+ clip
    • He would be moving to a MUCH easier division in the Big Ten West than the division he played in at the SEC
    • I see him as a guy who could consistently get Nebraska to an 8-4 record (year in and year out) with a shot to sprinkle in some 10+ win seasons 2 out of every 5 years
  • Why this would not be a good hire
    • He went 12-2 in his first year at Auburn; after that he went 10-4 once, 9-4 once, 8-5 3 times, 7-6 once, 6-4 once. He got less successful as time went on at Auburn
    • History tells us Gus would probably get Nebraska back to 8-9 wins per year, but he’s probably not going to get us back to 10-11 wins every year; question is, does he become Bo Pelini part 2 or can he win at that 8-9 game annual pace and have ~3 special seasons every 10 years
    • Hurry up, no huddle offense
      • The hurry up, no huddle offense is a bad fit for the Big Ten West

He runs first and sets up passing off of that.

He would be better than what we are currently working with but that’s not saying a lot

He had an elite QB at Auburn that could cover up any warts. After Cam left came back to earth.

UCF is going to the B12. He’s not going to Nebraska after seeing how this story is going to end. Besides, do you think he could turn this thing around?

Anyone want to dig up the threads from when frost left UCF about how much better Nebraska is than UCF? Our programs are on different trajectories. One is positive and the other has plateaued.

NGEbraska is what it is and will always be. Good news, you’ll still have a packed stadium because, what else is there to do in Lincoln? Enjoy being the B!G doormat of your conference 😂

With utmost empathy: Nebraska is a has been program. I appreciate you have pride in where you live, but with the competitive nature of CFB now compared to the 90s, or whenever NEB was relevant: no player or coach sees value in living in NEB. Face it: it's not Frost, it's Nebraska. Will be fun reading Nebraska Football history in the Yale and Rutgers section. I swear CFB needs relegation...

I think we should just keep using UCF as our minor league system until they find a good coach.

Keep hoping, but the list of coaches who want to coach at NGEbraska is pretty slim.
You guys have the most delusional fanbase in college football

Perhaps UCF is not a good measuring stick for success. They are a team loaded with talent playing inferior competition week in and week out. Perhaps a better measuring stick for success would be a coach that goes to a crappy Group of 5 team like Umass or New Mexico State and turns their programs around.

Lofl @ that commuter school with a football team.

Because Nebraska is Nebraska they will always be relevant. And are really just the right hire away from being a top 10 team every year. Ucf? Who gives a ****.
