The chances of Michigan State's defense scoring were much greater than our offense scoring with 22 seconds left.

We throw a pick 6 there, and this board is more bat **** crazy than it already is.

2nd and 16 on our own 32.

A sack and fumble recovery immediately puts MSU in FG range. Much more likely outcome than us gaining 50 yards to get our FG kicker remotely within his range.

After the sack it would it have been second down? I really can't remember.
2nd and 16 with 27 seconds and two timeouts (one timeout assuming you take one after the sack). Ball at 32, needing 30 yards to give Culp a shot.

No brainer. You call timeout. MSU is inclined to play somewhat of a prevent defense there. They’ll give you 10 yard passes. Try to hit a couple of them and break loose for some extra yards. There’s actually a pretty good shot you get into FG range there.

Obviously big blunder by Frost there. But some blame needs to go on Adrian. Four year starting QB, he should know to immediately pop up from that sack and call timeout.

A 4 yr starter would have thrown the ball away to save a time out and the sack. Ty for the info. This is pretty much what I thought the situation was.

Why Frost let the final 22 seconds of the game expire with two timeouts remaining? I really do not understand this decision. Tia
Deep down, he doesn't trust AM.

I always say. AM giveth and he taketh away.

No way. First of all, you don’t need 50 yards. You need 30 for a long FG attempt. 35 for a 50 yard attempt. Culp’s had his problems but he has the leg.

Secondly, MSU should be playing prevent. If they aren’t, you can take a deep shot with a real chance at connecting. If they are, you have time for three underneath passes to get chunks of yards. At least puts you in Hail Mary territory.

Fearing a sack fumble is the definition of fear of failure there. Even with Adrian’s fumbling and our OL problems, odds of that are low.

A long throw to the sideline would have been ripe for picking

They just sacked our QB, so yeah, you nailed it, Tucker was gonna sit back in prevent and let us march down the field.

We've had a freaking extra point blocked and returned this season and our K is a robust 3 for 8 this season.

The odds of us shitting the bed with 22 seconds remaining on our own 32 massively outweighed us getting into FG range and actually making the kick.

The clock management was bewildering. First the QB run instead of a throw to the sideline. Then Martinez allowing himself to be sacked instead of throwing it away. It's like they never practice these things.

*27 seconds. Those extra 5 are big.

The defensive strategy is different when it’s 1st and 10 at 38 with 35 seconds left than it is at 2nd and 16 at 32 with 27 seconds left. Much more inclined to play prevent during the latter, and again, if they don’t you take shots.

Also, we just connected on an 18 yard play before the sack. So if you’re using history as an indicator, a big pass play should be considered likely as well.

If we really don’t trust ourselves in that spot, it’s weird we decided to throw three straight times in OT.

A sack/fumble is not just a possibility for this team. It's likely

If Frost is too timid to try to win the game in regulation, then why take a time out in the first place, after the defense held MSU short on 3rd down?

That's what made no sense to me. I realize the chances to getting into FG are not that great. But if you're not going to at least give it a shot, just let the clock run and take the ball with :20 or so seconds left.

Exactly. And if we’re so worried about sack fumbles or interceptions, why did we throw on 1st and 10, 2nd and 9, and 3rd and 3 in overtime?

Yeah that's a good point too.

"We don't trust our QB to heave one down the field with :15 left to try to get into FG range. Let's just go to OT and then he'll win the game for us!"
