Human nature drives us to create "order" out of chaos. 18 teams wouldn't accomplish that because simple math is a huge factor in that desire for order. The most likely outcome in the long run is that we will have a 64 team division and an 8 team playoff among the 8 subdivisions, and a 2nd 64 team division that does the same but there will be 2 national champions. Extra-division games will continue to exist but it'll be limited to teams included in the division directly below "1-A". No more matchups between an Alabama and a Fordham, or Nebraska vs Omaha Clown School.
