Okay, let me try explaining this a different way. Owen is making a good point, a valid point, just not a point that addresses the question that began this thread. I'm not arguing that she must prove or disprove racism. What I'm saying is that the person who posted the video did so ostensibly to demonstrate an argument that undermines the notion that the Georgia law is racist. The video does not make said argument, it makes a separate point.
Okay, that makes sense. But I don't agree that she makes a separate point because her interviewee keeps telling her she doesn't get it. I think she does, but on a more profound level than he understands. Appreciate your clarification. We seem to be looking at this from different piers, but you're being logical and I appreciate that.

Regardless of one's viewpoint on the Georgia law here is where I come down (and I've said this repeatedly) - Sports is there for entertainment, not political discourse. I've said multiple times that when it invades the stadium, arena or whatever field of play that's when I stop watching and stop spending money on it. So, since MLB has decided to make the baseball a political event that's it I'm done. I would also tell the University of Nebraska the exact same thing, and this is coming from a donor and a multi-decade season ticket holder for football, men's basketball and volleyball. So far I still control my checkbook and wallet and I still have the power of the pen and I'm not afraid to use or not use it (to write checks). I attend the games to get away from the continual political raging going on in the public arena.

I’ve often found that people don’t really get mad when there is crossover from sports, musicians, and business into politics. They get mad when they disagree with them.

Where was the outrage for Goya, My Pillow, and Chachi?

I’m now a racist because I charged a woman tax on her dogs prescription. Regardless that It’s the law. Charging lawful tax now makes you a racist. I think my dog may also be a racist. She barks at squirrels.

Nah, he got probation and some community service - after making up some ******** story about how mental and physical ailments caused him to fill out his ex's ballot and forge her name on it, all the while having no idea he was doing something wrong.

Agree with you that mail-in voting works great in Colorado, and everyone in both parties who has half a brain wants to keep it. Some things are better done in person, though. For example, I long for the days when blowharding gasbags who think everyone wants to hear their red-hot political takes could only inflict them on the fellers down at the local Casey's General Store or coffee shop, sparing the rest of us.

Is Georgia trying to get rid of mail-in voting?

Where did I mention Georgia? Go squeal at someone else and tell them what they can and cannot watch on TV.

I'm just looking for an answer. You keep commenting, and you were discussing mail-in voting. What's wrong?

I responded to someone else about a voter fraud case in Colorado, without saying a single word about Georgia. Is that okay with you, or have you expanded your hall monitor duties beyond what people are allowed to watch on TV?

You sure are the sensitive one. No, it's not okay, you are grounded. Put your phone by the fridge and clean up your room.

Huh? There was tons of outrage. I think all Goya did was say Hispanics (citizens) have been more prosperous under Trumps policies vs Obama.. which is a fact.

a looong read

Here are the most significant changes to voting in the state, as written into the new law:

“The Election Integrity Act of 2021” expands in-person early voting dates and hours for most counties, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting. The original drafts of the legislation would have scrapped all weekend voting aside from the second Saturday, but changes were made to now allow both Saturdays of the early voting period to hold voting and gives counties the options to hold voting on Sundays, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting.
The legislation also requires three weeks of early voting and expands the hours the polls are open. The changes were made in response to opposition from racial justice groups who said the proposal targeted black voters who traditionally participate in “Souls to the Polls” voter drives that take place on Sunday’s, according to NPR.

Myth: Voters Won’t Have Access To Water While They Wait In Line
One of the provisions bans volunteers from handing out food, water or other items to voters standing in line.
Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia Andrea Young criticized the law, including this specific provision.
“Senate Bill 202 is an anti-voter bill that attacks absentee voting, criminalizes giving Georgians a drink of water to their neighbors, allows state takeover of county elections, and retaliates against the elected Secretary of State by replacing him with a State Board of Elections Chair chosen by the legislature – not the voters.”

President Joe Biden also criticized the provision, according to The Hill.
“If you want any indication that it has nothing to do with fairness, nothing to do with decency, they passed a law saying you can’t provide water to people standing in line while they’re waiting to vote?” Biden reportedly said.

“You don’t need anything else to know that this is nothing but punitive, designed to keep people from voting. You can’t provide water for people about to vote. Give me a break.”

Fact: Voters Will Still Have Access To Water & Are Not Forbidden From Bringing Their Own Food Items

“No person shall solicit votes in any manner or by any means or method, nor shall any person distribute or display any campaign material, nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector,” the law reads.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, said in December that the state would crack down on “line warming” which includes giving voters gifts of any kind to “inappropriately influence voters in the crucial final moments before they cast their ballots.”
The law, however, still allows voters to have access to water, despite claims to the contrary.
“This Code section shall not be construed to prohibit a poll officer from distributing… or from 1828 making available self-service water from an unattended receptacle to an elector waiting in 1829 line to vote.”

Myth: The Election Laws Facilitate “Voter Suppression”

Another provision Democrats are criticizing is the provision requiring voters show an ID to get an absentee ballot.
An op-ed written by Teri Kanefield calls the new law “Jim Crow.”
Kanefield acknowledges the law expands voter access but then says requiring voters to show an ID presents “unnecessary hurdles.”
Biden also criticized this provision, saying these were “rigid restrictions.”
“This is Jim Crow in the 21st Century,” Biden said in a statement. “It must end. We have a moral and Constitutional obligation to act.”

Fact: Voter ID Laws Are Found In More Than Half Of U.S. States

Residents can receive a free ID Card from the state at any county registrar’s office with proper proof of residency and other documentation.
Out of Georgia’s near 11 million population, approximately 200,000 Georgian’s lack a drivers license or state identification card, according to CNN. That is less than 2% of the state’s population. AJC reports 97% of registered Georgia voters have an official driver’s license or state ID.
For the some 200,000 residents who don’t have identification, Georgia residents can receive a Georgia ID card which has no age restriction. Applicants have to fill out the required forms to receive an ID. Applicants must also provide proof of residency, their social security number and proof of citizenship. Utility bills, phone bills and a birth certificate are just some of the ways residents can prove they are Georgia residents.
Voters will be required to request and return an absentee ballot with an ID, be it either a driver’s license or state ID number. Voters can also verify their ballot with the last four digits of their social security number. Votes can be returned online through an online request portal so long as a voter has their driver’s license number or state ID number, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Voter identification laws are not uncommon and at least 35 states require voters to show or present some form of ID when voting, whether it be by mail or in person. Georgia already has voter ID laws in place for in person voting.

Myth: The New Law “Ends Voting Hours Early”

Biden claimed he was “worried” about how “un-American this whole initiative is.”
“It’s sick. It’s sick. Deciding that you’re going to end voting at five o’clock when working people are just getting off work.”
Biden reiterated a similar sentiment in a written statement the following day.
“Among the outrageous parts of this new state law, it ends voting hours early so working people can’t cast their vote after their shift is over.”

Fact: Voting Access Has Not Been Reduced

The Washington Post gave Biden’s claims a whopping four Pinocchios.
“One could understand a flub in a news conference. But then this same claim popped up in an official presidential statement,” Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote. “Not a single expert we consulted who has studied the law understood why Biden made this claim, as this was the section of the law that expanded voting for many Georgians.”
The new voting law still permits polling places to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and as long as you are in line by 7 p.m. then you can still vote, the Post confirmed.
Early voting access would be expanded for most counties and would add an additional mandatory Saturday, Georgia Public Broadcasting said. Counties can also have early voting open as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m., according to Georgia Public Broadcasting.

Exactly my point. The people now mad about MLB went about supporting Goya and My Pillow to record sales. Now those people want to cancel the MLB.

The food and drink change reminds me what use to happen at schools. There was an "official" count day of like October 10 or something. A lot of schools had credit recovery or drop out programs and enticed non-graduates to spend a day, the count day, at school with lots of food and drink. It was one big party and schools could count those people as students and get several thousand dollars for each if they never showed up again. Then it got out of hand when a school start giving away a car, no kidding.

Obviously, the state eventually figured this out and now reimburses for results.

MLB is a business based on sports, so when businesses based on sports make decisions that alienate a large portion of their customer base to show how woke they are they need to deal with the fallout from that. Not news to me.

You can't distinguish between customers of a company buying a product to support a company vs. a company doing all it can to try to cancel something (in this case, a legislative body) it claims to not agree with? If that's the case, you should stop assuming that you are smarter than anyone.

thats cool for you. But the people who put on the show for your entertainment have just as much right to express their views with their behavior as you do. I kinda understand your opinion but personally the athletes opinions matter to me just as much as anyone else's opinion. Will using sports to make a statement change sports? Yep.
and for some people thats a good thing. I'd rather be feel good about my convictions than hide them for potential gain.

not that i necessarily agree with the decision but they are also appealing to a large portion of their customer base. maybe a larger portion than they are alienating. so in the end maybe its good business decision. idk
my college buddies and I dont care a fig about what you want to label "woke" behavior or ideals. it wont affect your average fan's decision to attend games. just the people who worry about political things i.e. you

I have no opinion on this new law as I haven't read it. What I do is a fact is my brother receive 2 ballots in the mail for the last election. Both were addressed to him and he didn't request either one. Now on paper, he appears like someone who is a likely Dem voter. When he works, it's for near the minimum wage. Has had drug problems and spent time in prison. (Has since cleaned up his act) Was this a mistake or on purpose? Was this an isolated incident or wide spread? I couldn't possibly know but it's fact it happened to him.

TIFWIW.

Yup. Can't wait for MLB to announce it is pulling its corporate offices out of NY, or cancelling contracts with China, or apologize for having an exhibition game in Cuba. What are the election laws in those countries? Oh, right, not much, or any.

One side has selective outrage. That is my entire point. Outrage when a business, celebrity, sport makes a stand that we don’t agree with. Full support when that same business has a viewpoint that is in agreement with my own.

Do you not agree that there is a massive difference between the two? Goya didnt go after AOC, start a movement to smear her and didn't threaten to pull his product from the shelves from her district. His business and his supporters showed their support without trying to destroy the opposition.
