Yea. It has been for 70 years.

The oligarchs, fortunately for you and me, care not about the daily dealings of the every man.

If that’s your excuse, it belongs in one of those little bags made for dog poop.
Do they have the power to control the daily dealings of every man?

They also had more affordable healthcare and education. It's not just because of cable or smartphone plans that some younger people are falling into debt. I don't even know many people in my age group that have cable TV and just use a cheap Netflix subscription instead, so in many cases they already are cutting back where they can.

Healthcare is too expensive, I agree....though nowadays young people can stay on their parents' health insurance until they are 26. Most should be able to find a job that provides health insurance by age 26. Though I would agree with those that say health insurance should not be tied to your job, as this makes it harder on small business owners and entrepreneurs. But there are tradeoffs in everything in life.

Education? Again, there are affordable options, and if you pick the right major, college is still a good investment. Personal Finance should be a required course for every high school student in the U.S. They didn't have so many useless degrees, and useless administrative bloat, back in the old days.

I suppose in theory.

Can you name a land that doesn’t?

Hell, even that beach Leo DiCaprio landed on was eventually ruled by an oligarch.
So, we are at the mercy of oligarchs.
Just so happens that our nation has some of the worst ones, due to the money at stake.

For profit healthcare, for profit prison, for profit education.
All are abominations. Wish they weren't but corporate capitalism has really showed it's ugly head.
The US should be ashamed to call itself a developed nation.

i have 2 millenials.
id put their grit and resolve up against most.
generalizations.

I'm a Corporate Trainer and have worked with hundreds of Millennials. Society has grouped them into one mass collective centered around laziness and victimization. It's unfair and misguided.

The majority of them are hard working and driven like people in all age groups. what's funny is many of us non Millennials act like 40 year old, or 50 year old, or 60 year old lazy and useless people don't exist.

True. Millennials are way over generalized in terms of their collective behavior. There are certain truths that factor in and need to be accounted for. The price of higher education at a university has become absurd for what you get. Many of them have been saddled with huge amounts of debt which has squeezed out their ability to purchase automobiles and houses. Cheap money has made assets like houses overpriced and out of reach for many. I wonder how many are leaving college with a lot of debt and have a low skill set to show for it. Sadly they are going to join society and be disillusioned with the cost of living compared to their wages.

My kid is 16. I don't know what she will do for a living, but I'm damn certain she will be debt-free in her early twenties and will have a degree. She does not need to repeat the mistakes that I've made.

Are you a victim?
We are all victims to a varying degree from this messed up country.

A culture of lack of empathy is by design.
What is needed is to explain the origin of our culture, wherein the United States, powerful groups and their enablers have created an empathy-devoid culture. In this case the genesis could not be more clear, as famed primate scientist Frans de Waal asserts, “You need to indoctrinate empathy out of people in order to arrive at extreme capitalist positions.”

I'm 34.

the US ruling class has done nothing to actively stand in the way of what I want to do with my life, or limit how much money I can make while doing it.

if your experience has been different, look in the mirror.
I was dumb when I was 34 as well. Sad times
America has an interesting history and some great people along the way. Overall though, it continues to operate poorly and the citizens go along with it as boot lickers. Patriotism has become a disease.

Yikes. Yeah, I don't consider myself a victim in any way, so you can exclude me from your group, and I'm a long way from the "powerful groups." Have you lost all agency? Are you just a pod? Can you do nothing to be successful (I'm assuming you don't consider yourself a success or accomplished based upon this entire thread)? You sound like a baby, and I sympathize, because you kinda sound trapped.

Just wanted to expose the notion that America is still a free market where anyone can prosper. Older generations throwing stones was the catalyst. Luckily they are on the way out. Most selfish generation.

American culture breeds people like you and that is the problem. Our society breed sociopaths
This is not intended to be insulting, but aren't you the same poster who plays vids all day and argues strenuously about how terrible it is that you can't legally get baked all day long? I mean, this "my country blows and is rigged against me" thing just isn't carrying a ton of weight as I envision you sitting in your gaming chair in a dark room in the middle of the day rolling a fatty. It sort of sounds like you aren't really giving it a good go, and you sound like a spoiled brat.

calling an entire generation selfish amidst a dozens-of-posts-long 'woe is me' thread sure is something.

It is. The road there will absolutely be bumpier for some than it will be for others, but suck it up and make yourself better. Sheesh, what a bunch of sissy talk.

I work 40 hours a week. I don't advocate smoking weed all day. People should be able to if they so choose though. The drug war however is one of the biggest injustices America has brought to the world.

I don't play video games all day. I research on my time off.

The gamestop event alone should show that the market is not free and it is socialism for the elites, capitalism for the rest. Gotta have money to make money in the system. Many don't have those means so they become the working poor.

No. The smart thing is to not participate in their game. So many have battered-wives syndrome. American culture is terrible for the health and well-being of its subjects.

Ahhh, it's all those slick hedge-funds guys keeping us down. Do you like your job? If not, do something to improve yourself to get a better one. Are you jealous? I think the problems in this country have a lot to do with the way you think and feel victimized. There are things each one of us can do to improve our situation if we don't like it. It's going to be harder for some than it is for others.

Gamestop was ultimate proof that current capitalism in America has become unsalvageable and isn't for the lower classes.
I'd rather do something to improve society and that means fundamentally changing it.
Lack of empathy is sociopathy.

I feel awesome. Best Country on the planet, as least it has been. I'm thankful every day for the opportunity in this Country, even if it means having to deal with a Country getting dumber and softer by the day, or that I'm not Nancy Pelosi or running a hedge fund. The culture, at the moment, is bad because in large part, people by into the absolute nonsense coming out of washington and the media. People are too dumb or too dependent to do anything about it. You, actually, are the one who is acting beaten down; maybe you should do something about it. Maybe you should run for office, or move to Europe.

if you had $200 6 months ago & bought GME with all of it, you'd be up to $9k as of the closing bell on Fri.

I made $40k on GME in 36 hours, and am no financial expert. American capitalism sucks!

We were thinking of New Zealand or Canada.
The US was bought for many years ago. The US is the worst in the industrialized world in practically all categories. What you are feeling is nostalgia.

I bought my first house in 1981 and the interest rate was 17.25%. Carter was the president until January 1981 so he was not the president at the time of my purchase but his policies for the 4 previous years he was in office were the reasons for the high rates. I had a friend that actually had a rate over 18.00%.

I started a thread before it spiked. I was telling any and all to hop onboard.

you must've been too busy doing 'research' to notice.

oh, and I also just donated half of that, plus 48% of my 2020 earnings, to the greatest charity of all - the IRS

so, it's more like I got ours. you're welcome.
