Because, who wouldn't rather be called Coburn?

(The pride of Laurel, NE, by the way...)
I did not know that. Amazing.

Wow, how anyone watched that game and thinks the refs impacted things is beyond me.

That was one of the best officiated games I have seen, the game had great flow, the Skers made some really tough shots.

This was a right time/right place type game that just fell apart for the Huskers in the last 2 minutes.

I agree that up until those last few minutes of the game and in overtime that the game was called well. Things fell apart for those refs though when it became apparent that NU actually had a chance of winning. The missed free throws and that last possession of regulation was our own fault but it shouldn't have been necessary to make those FTs OR score on that last possession if the refs didn't sh## the bed. IMO they didn't want to be the crew to take Illinois out of a top 2 seed. They allowed the goon from Illinois to commit BLATANT offensive fouls on multiple plays that led to that game getting tied up and then a win in OT. Yes we still could have won but our guys were playing against 7-8 guys at the end of that game. You're in denial if you can't see that.

they probably should've just forfeited because the schedule was unfair

It was a home game. I said they should forfeit some of the away games. Precedence was set with Wisconsin's football team so the games would just be no contests without a L attached to them. Winking

they're going to win a game @ MD this week

I also think all these games in short order have helped gel this team

Ha...Why would the refs care who gets a 2 seed?
If you are going to come up with crazy theories at least make them sort of interesting.

Sure but why would the refs care? It doesn't make sense, they don't get anything out of it.
Refs get a paycheck from the B1G. It's in the best interest of their future employment and game assignments to be sure that things go the way that is most beneficial to the league honchos. It's the same reason some of the calls go the way they do in football. Making a call that costs say the Buckeyes a spot in the playoff would be career suicide.

I mean...okay? I guess.
But NU shot and made more FT's
The fouls were 19-20

We have to stop with the referee and B1G administration conspiracies theories.
Where is @stucknks to call you all pussies and whiny babies?
IF you watched those last couple of minutes of that Illinois game you have to admit regardless of your fandom that the officiating was horrible. NU got hosed on multiple plays even though the earlier part of the game was called pretty well I thought. They let Cockburn get away with murder that led to Illinois being able to get a driving lane for layups. In one play he grabbed our guy's arm and pulled it down so he couldn't contest the shot AFTER he had shoved Walker 6 feet up the lane to clear out It was terrible but you see that in every conference in the country whether it's football or basketball. It's just the way it is. No doubt IF NU were good and in the national spotlight we would get some of those calls against the bottom feeders too. Denying that is just being naive.

Cockburn should have fouled out with several minutes left in the game. You can't shove your man out of the lane to clear a path for a driver or at least that's what the rule book states. That's an offensive foul. I don't care what the foul numbers were. NU got ONE questionable foul call earlier in the second half and Illinois's coach lost his mind. After that it all went Illinois's way. It's the way it goes when you're a bottom feeding program.

great but that doesn’t mean the refs missed a call because it was Illinois and Nebraska. There are 10-15calls a game for both sides that don’t get called.

I thought Brockington got fouled at the end of the game. Surprised by the no call, and had the roles been reversed we would have a 10 page thread about how the officials screwed us out of a win by not calling that a foul

In real time I thought it looked like there might have been a foul there too but I didn't see a replay that showed a foul. That said, IF that had been an Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, etc etc player that drove in for a potential game winner against the Huskers do your really think they wouldn't have gotten a foul call there? The refs had zero incentive either way in the Penn State game. Penn State is barely a rung above NU on the food chain. I understand your point about whining about officiating but when it's that blatant it deserves attention.

I thought the Illinois-Nebraska crew made it clear from the beginning they were not going to call anyone for snowplowing the lane. I hate that, because it's unfair to the defense and it makes no sense to allow it while enforcing the ever-so-evil dribble handoff screen that so many officials love to call. But I wasn't expecting them to make that call late in the game, after letting it happen for two hours.

Like I said at the time, if that call's clearly not going to made, take advantage and clear the lane for McGowens.

I watch a lot of Big Ten and Big East basketball games and I just see refs doing their job. The fact that Cockburn had 4 fouls tells you something.

As far as the Penn St game goes, you really think a ref has enough time to see a play, determine if the play was a foul, then remembers this is Penn St vs Nebraska, no one really cares and thinks No Call, time to get to the airport?

Well maybe he should think about getting another job if they’re not taking it seriously enough...

It isn't about getting to the airport. It's about the outcome of the game. I guarandamned tee you that those refs are influenced by who is playing in the game and the potential ramifications of calls made at crunch time. They're human. Geezus, Cockburn was literally pushing Walker 5-6 feet up the lane like a damned pulling guard. NU would NEVER be able to get away with that against Illinois.
I don't know why you think refs are such noble beings beyond reproach. I've known more than a few and they regularly joked about some of the calls they either made or didn't make depending on who was playing and who the coaches were.

Kofi I think, has fouled out of 1 game in his two years, he doesn't foul a lot. When you have position and a teammate drives and you turn and seal that is okay.

You also have to remember that he is almost 300 pounds and no fat, the dude is a monster, people are hanging on him all the time with no calls being made, if they called legit, he would shoot 25 FT's a game

Officiating..If their running to the airport not wanting to make the correct call..

Ok, I agree.

My point to Dingle is that I don't think refs put that much thought into making individual call in a game. Now I will say that some crews allow for a more physical game, like the Illinois crew did and some crews will allow the players to play like the Creighton Villanova game this past weekend. Like I said, I just don't believe they make individual calls, at a random time in the middle of the second half, based on where one team is in the standings as compared to the other.

Those prejudices you are talking about are in place before the game. It affects how they call the whole game, not some random call in the middle of the half.

Some coaches get a T called quicker based on reputation. Some, like Jay Wright, can literally coach on the court, like he is running a practice, and nothing is said. But that isn't determined with 12:34 left in the first half. A ref or a crew may let play get physical, but it was that way the whole game, we only pay attention when we believe it affects the outcome.

I watched much of their game v. Illinois.

N has the ball with 16-seconds left. game tied. the mayor calls timeout. (Knight seldom did that.) The mayor draws up something. The ball is inbounded. N guard beats the ball into the court ... 8,7,6 ... horn. N froze. Never got a shot off. Lost in OY.

Coaches' end game and end half tactic of trying to get the last shot off just as time expires completely baffles me. It's ignorance on steroids most of the time. Coach: let me show how smart I am. Player: just let me shoot. Coach: but I'm smarter than you. Player: just let me shoot. Coach: shut up, Fran's talking about me.

Here again, N coming off 25-straight B10 losses with a chance to actually win a game and the mayor puts them in rigor mortise.

I would say it was more of a poor design than any sort of paralysis by analysis. As I said in this or another thread, why bring another guard to set the screen, knowing that Underwood was going to switch on the screen. Bring a big out, set the screen and either create a mismatch or create space for a shot or pass. Also, as someone else mentioned, start the play with more than 6 seconds left on the clock.

That works, but I think you just give the ball to Teddy and let him work. He's the most versatile 1v1 player you have and you might as well use him in situations that suit his strengths.

What really blew the play up was Ayo (don't want to look his last name up) aggressively hedging the pick and surprising Trey with his defense. I don't really follow the college game as much, but I would be surprised if there is a guard with better draft potential than him.

I think Ayo is a late first round at best but he is a hell of a college player and I am guessing first team AA and maybe top 2/3 for Player of the Year.
