Back in the old days there were services like Max Emfinger, SuperPrep Magazine, and National Recruiting Advisor who had recruiting news and predictions. They would publish rankings and interviews just like today, only in a low-tech delivery like magazines and 800-numbers.

Back in the old days, coaches networked. Talent evaluator like Pierce was worth his weight in gold.

How did recruiting work before all these services...?

A lot better for Nebraska!

Always remember Jeremy Crabtree as a popular source of recruiting news. It seemed for awhile that he was the only source for midwestern recruiting via talk radio and the newsprint channels. Does he currently have any Nebraska based media featuring his evaluations at this point?
GBR!

The coaches watched a ton of HS film. Coaches would send film of kids all the time for coaches to review. There are legendary stories of TO watching film on a guy a coach sent only to see another kid he liked. If I am not mistaken, Hipp was one of those.

The high school coaches were much more involved and counted on by the college coaches, as far as recruiting goes.
The raters were also spread out all over the country. There was input from "regional" guys who would send the top players from their area. Parade All Americans for example, had players from all over. If you were to do a Parade All American team today, the players would all come from a few states or regions. It wouldn't have the national representation.

Do you think coaches aren’t watching as much film as they used to?

I don’t. Every power five school in America and many FCS and group of six programs have someone that sits through all the film and passes off what they think is acceptable to the position coach and the head coach. So the school watches plenty of film but individual coaches not as much as they did in the past

Is this person usually one of those "analysts" we see on a staff or more of some sort of 3rd party consultant?

Who assigned stars and ranked classes? How did schools know who to target?
a lot of relationships with high school coaches, and the best athletes stood out of course
when switzer and dr . tom recruited gill, they didn't need a mag to tell them to

Street & Smith was my go to in the 80s. I wanted to have a basic knowledge before the regular season began.

Today, you can get info instantly. All of it free. It all eventually gets out there.

Coaches are still watching a lot of film, no doubt but in "the day" that was how the coaches learned about a kid, the coach put the film together and sent it all over. Now with Hudl there are instant highlights literally hours after a game. It's just much more streamlined and focus.

It’s a staff position, so I’m sure they’re called some sort of an analyst. They may use a third-party but the analyst is the one that would be using the third-party. If I’m not mistaken , One of the interns over at 247 just took a job with a Hudl and I am pretty sure he sends film to schools. He is from down here and as a friend of my son. He’s always asking on Twitter for film of players to put in the huddle database.
