Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but I think this is the week we finally take a few shots downfield. I'm going to say 4 attempts beyond 20 yards. If someone finally has to defend the deep ball , it would go a long way towards opening everything else up.

Weather could impact things.

Lubick’s game plan talk points right back to coaching not having their guys ready to execute the game plan.

It seems like, we took more deep shots in the opener in 2018 than we have the last two seasons.

We probably don’t throw up many “50-50” balls because it’s more like “70-30” balls... with the Defense having the advantage over our WRs at this point. Will be interesting to see if they open it up against the Fighting Illini!

c'mon Frosty. just dust off the old playbook. Start with a lot of option, pitch and dive plays to suck up the safeties, then throw in the occasional play action pass. Give Crouch a call if you have any questions. 20 throws per game. That's it.

if we throw 10 deep balls, we will have at least 3 picks. Luke doesn't have the arm to complete them effectively unless the wr's have space

You have to have a line that can protect for more than 2 seconds to be able to throw deep shots. A running back who is an actual threat to lend credibility in the play-action game also helps a lot. NU has had neither through 3 games. PSU had Luke running for his life most of the day and we haven't sniffed a 100 yard rusher from the RB position.

It takes about 2 brain cells to run a go route, it's not that we can't send anyone downfield. That's not a talent issue. It's that 1) We can't give a QB time to look for long-developing routes 2) Our QBs don't see their receiving options well 3) The QBs deep accuracy is poor

Our WRs are the whipping boy for this offense but the fact is there isn't a position group on that side of the ball that is truly a strength.

You gotta block long enough to throw downfield

I appreciate this sentiment, but it's simply not true.

there is nothing stopping us from attempting a deep pass down the sidelines at the top of a 3-step drop. literally not one single thing.

you don't need to protect any longer than a short route. you don't need to see if the guy's open. you identify one on one coverage, you close your eyes and throw it to a spot. that's it. very simple.

based on what?

he's the only QB who's completed a high percentage of deep passes on the roster over the last 2 years.

how hard is it to complete deep passes off trick plays?
He doesn't have the arm strength to make all the throws

I can’t agree with this more! 100% spot on.

We need to get better pass protection from our OT's before we can start taking a lot of shots downfield. On most of our downfield passes, the OT's would get immediately pushed right back into the QB by smaller DE's.

I agree, this is the week to start. I think we need to attempt at least 5 or 6 of them. I don't expect Luke to hit on all of them but we need to hit a few. We need this to get the running game going, we need it to keep our wide receivers happy. It just has to start and this is the perfect game for it.

Yes, I think if we even try just a few but connect on at least one deep ball (even with rain) then it'll pay huge dividends in the run game.

just do what armstrong did, throw a bomb and hope someone runs under it.
