I disagree, this offense requires a short passing game because it has a relatively stripped down zone read game. The short passing game takes pressure off of the run game, limits qb contact, and spreads the defense out and wears them down....but...it requires good timing between qb and wr, and great blocking by wr and lineman...especially in their ability to get downfield. Both qbs struggle with their timing, at making crisp clean passes to the exterior, and our blocking on the outside is mediocre when our walkons are in, and non-existent when the younger, less experienced guys are in. That means we have to rely heavily on the run game, which we aren't built to do...and we have to use the qb too often...which has lead to injuries and ball security issues. The deep game feeds off of the sucking safeties in the box to play the screen and exterior passing game. This offense actually works somewhat similar to the WCO...it should have extremely high completion %, with easy rhythm passes for the qb, and then a qb hit to the TE for big yardage when the d sucks up on the screens. Mix in the zone read, and single back running game for balance. We just don't have the personnel...because we really have one playmaker in wandale and then whichever qb is playing. UCF had an all-conference TE, WE, RB, and QB.
We don't have a short passing game...so we are running on early downs...we don't have a running game so we are 3rd and long too often, and neither qb can hit covered receivers on 3rd and long with no pass protection. I bet if we can get a few more yards on exterior passing...get to 2nd and 3rd and short, then use zone read/play action we will suddenly have guys open. Right now everything is broken and relies on pure athletic ability or broken plays for yardage.
