Offensive Summary

I’m not sure how many of you read the article from anonymous B1G coaches and some of their thoughts on Nebraska, but one of the people (that I’m assuming is Brian Ferentz) said something that I’ve been harping on for years. If you run the offense we run, you make sacrifices, and one of those is having a defense that can’t be as good as its potential because you put them in bad spots many times. Now, he goes on to say that the defense can’t be good because the style of play in practice doesn’t allow for it, but I’m not sure I agree with that reasoning. What IS interesting though is how we practice could be a decent talking point. We want a ton of reps for guys, but we do not correct things on the field, we correct it in the film room (for the most part). This anonymous coach would say that’s detrimental, but I think it’s like anything else, you have to believe in what you are doing. It’s just like us believing in morning practices due to the science, but Penn State shifting away from morning practices due to the science. At the end of the day just believe in what you do and you should be fine. But with that said, our offense really left us hanging last year. Take the last game of the season for example… in the 3rd quarter, our defense forced 2 3 and outs which resulted in negative yards for Iowa and 14 points for our offense. We tied it all up based on our defense getting us the ball back. But the 4th quarter, for whatever reason, was a different story offensively. Our defense starts the fourth with another 3 and out, and our offense returns the favor failing to get a first down. Luckily, our defense again forces another 3 and out against Iowa, and we are all feeling pretty good about ourselves. Unfortunately, our offense yet again goes 3 and out. While the next possession for Iowa wasn’t a 3 and out, it still only netted 19 yards on 6 plays, and a punt. Our offense AGAIN goes 3 and out and the game is still tied 24-24. Our defense then forces a fumble on the second play from Iowa to get the ball back to our offense. We then go 6 plays for 9 yards offensively, and after our defense did all that for us, it finally broke and allowed the game winning field goal.

I don’t mean to pour salt in a wound and relive that, but for all the heat Chinander gets, games like Iowa are not our defenses fault and if we are going to run the offense we do, they have to win those games for us. We were 72nd in scoring offense last year, and Chinander had us at 66th in scoring defense. That just can not happen with how we play.

So what went wrong last year? There’s probably a multitude of answers, and gone is Troy Walters from last year. But since it’s spring, I’ll dive back into something I brought up as a possible issue that stopped our development and improvement for 2019. If you remember, last year, Dedrick Mills wasn’t here in the spring, JD Spielman and Wandale Robinson both sporadically sat out of practices, Kade Warner was out during the spring as well, and I believe Jack Stoll was wearing a green no contact jersey. So if Adrian Martinez wants to work on timing and getting better, who is he working on that with? If you look at the spring game stats, our leading rushers were Jaylin Bradley, Miles Jones, Austin Hemphill, and Brody Belt. Our leading receivers were Todd Honas, Wyatt Mazour, Jaylin Bradley, and Miles Jones. I don’t need to point out the correlation, but I will, did any of those guys have anything to do with helping or hurting us in 2019? No. Martinez didn’t get the reps he needed as we were protecting him a bit, but I also get it from the coaches perspective, who was he going to work on those things with? We have to make sure we progress this spring and don’t take any steps backwards. And if our offense doesn’t roll our defense in the spring, I will be worried. We have a 2 deep OL that can steamroll our DL. Let’s dive into the positions.

Quarterback

Returning: Adrian Martinez, Noah Vedral, Luke McCaffrey, Matt Masker

Recruits: Logan Smothers

Remember last year when I told everyone we had the deepest QB room in the conference? I still remember telling people Vedral was much better than he showed in the 2018 spring game, and people didn’t believe it. Then come 2019 season, people are clamoring for him to start over Martinez. Social media is a funny thing. If I thought our room was deep last year, now imagine that we have everyone back, but replaced Andrew Bunch with a four star recruit in Logan Smothers. We have an embarrassing amount of talent there. I still am extremely confident in stating that Adrian Martinez is our starter against Purdue, but he will have a shorter leash in season for 2020. What I will find interesting though, is who the backup is. If Martinez is rolling like he is a preseason Heisman candidate, do we put Vedral as our #2? If there looks to be struggles or injuries, our future is definitely with McCaffrey or Smothers. You also have to wonder what they are going to do with LM. Sometimes you look at a guy and say “I can’t believe we aren’t playing him”, but moving him to WR and splitting some of his reps from QB may not help him develop as much as he needs. Remember, LM has only started at QB for 1 year as a senior in high school. But long story short, we have plenty of options. I think if we get rid of fat Adrian Martinez and he’s healthy, people are going to forget all the things they were saying negative about him this past fall. His ceiling is higher than anyone else’s for the 2020 season, and that’s why Frost is rolling with him. Luke McCaffrey as a junior may have a higher ceiling than Martinez, but not right now. Not this year. Logan Smothers (who will be here for the spring) and him are going to be fun to watch battle it out.

Runningback

Returning: Dedrick Mills, Rahmir Johnson, Ronald Thompkins, Brody Belt, (Wandale Robinson)

Recruits: Sevion Morrison, Marvin Scott, (Will Nixon)

So this is where it gets tricky, because priority #1 is keeping Dedrick Mills healthy for the fall. If we lose that guy, we are screwed. But priority #1B is finding a way to not make Wandale Robinson need to shoulder such a load in the backfield in 2020. Especially if JD Spielman is gone. We brought in a great crop of talented freshmen RBs, but that’s exactly what they are, freshmen. Remember, we all were extremely high on Rahmir Johnson, and it just didn’t click for him right away (not taking anything away from him, he redshirted last year). But I do think we have a couple guys more ready for D1 ball coming in. We need one or two of them to show they can spell Mills for a series or two. And I would love to tell you that’s what this spring will be about, but Morrison and Scott don’t get here until the summer. So Johnson needs to separate himself early, and Thompkins needs to get back healthy.

Wide Receiver

Returning: JD Spielman, Wan’Dale Robinson, Demariyon Houston, Jamie Nance (Chris Hickman)

Recruits: Omar Manning, Zavier Betts, Marcus Fleming, Alante Brown, Will Nixon

Keeping JD Spielman on here for now, but it’s not looking good currently. So we have 4 scholarship WRs for this spring, which is not ideal at all. Especially when you think that the keeping Wandale Robinson healthy is going to be a priority (he struggled with that last spring). It is a big 15 practices for guys like Houston and Nance. There are some big dogs coming in, and a guy like Alante Brown will be here for the spring. We MUST get Omar Manning and Zavier Betts qualified. And it will be interesting to see what they do with Chris Hickman, he’s still pretty slender, so moving him outside could be an option. However, if you do that, your TE room gets upperclass heavy in a hurry with the departure of LeGrone. But we are worrying about 2020, and if you grab Fidone over in Council Bluffs, you should be set at that spot. I worry a bit that Houston and Nance couldn’t see the field when we so badly needed people to step up last year, but it is what it is. And it won’t get easier for them with highly recruited guys coming in. What will be interesting is how we manage practices with such a thin WR core.

Tightend

Returning: Jack Stoll, Kurt Rafdal, Austin Allen, Travis Vokolek, Chris Hickman

Recruits: Zero

Deepest room with experience on the team. And last year I told everyone you would see a ton of 2 TE sets because of it. I was wrong. However, with our lack of depth at WR and our experience at TE, I think you finally do see it for 2020. Vokolek who sat out after transferring from Rutgers the coaches are extremely high on, as he is basically a mix of receiving and blocking that is tough to find. You return a steady Jack Stoll, and a guy like Austin Allen has pro scouts drooling with his potential. Kurt Rafdal always shows well, but his consistency is lacking a bit, so it’s a massive spring for him. We need to bring in at least 2 recruits in the 2021 class here, if not 3. But I’m not worried about TE, it will be fun to watch and see who separates themselves.

Offensive Line

Returning: Brendan Jaimes, Matt Farniok, Boe Wilson, Christian Gaylord, Broc Bando, Trent Hixson, Matt Sichterman, Will Farniok, Cam Jurgens, Matt Anderson, Brant Banks, Bryce Benhart, Jimmy Fritzsche, Michael Lynn, Ethan Piper

Recruits: Turner Corcoran, Alex Conn

We return everyone. Every single starter is back. But is that our best play for our best line in 2020? I am saying no. You look at the guys returning, and we have so many options that Coach Austin has to be extremely happy. This is a going to be a position group that will be fun to watch in terms of “do we stay with what we’ve been” or do we go with a different lineup as we think that elevates our game? I’ll say we go with the latter and we see a new face on the offensive line in 2020 despite returning all 5 starters. What Coach Austin is going to figure out is if we have a viable option at RT between Benhart, Bando, and Gaylord (throw Corcoran in there for good measure). If we have someone that can get it done, then Farniok to LG becomes a real possibility. We also have a guy like Ethan Piper chomping at the bit to take Hixson or Wilsons spot, and as I’ve said before, if that guy isn’t a 2-3 year starter for Nebraska something went horribly wrong. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, if you remember after the 2019 class signed, I stated that the S&C with the OL recruits was going to be so cool to watch. Guys like Anderson, Banks, Fritzsche, and others came in lean and athletic. Who was able to put the weight on and keep their athleticism? Who is going to be ready to step in when seniors Jaimes, Farniok, Wilson, and Gaylord are gone? Long story short, we have about 8 maybe 9 guys I think our coaches are comfortable playing right now. It’s just putting the pieces together in the best fit. I also think that our S&C is going to be fun to watch with the 2019 class where we brought in a bunch of tall, thin, and athletic guys and tried to put weight on them. With guys like Jaimes, Farniok, and Wilson, it afforded us the luxury of having 2 years to get them ready instead of needing it instantly.

Defense

This is going to be real interesting. This can be argued, but you could actually say that the defense had a better year than the offense. Scoring defense was better than our scoring offense, more guys invited to the combine, and quite honestly like I went over in the Iowa game, they did what they needed to for us to win in several games with the style of play we run offensively. And while we sat and said “this guy doesn’t fit our scheme” or “we need to run a 4-3” it was great to hear that after a decade of us actually running a 4-3 and people stating how Vincent Valentine, Randy Gregory, and others were better suited for a 3-4. It all comes down to development. I’ve showed this on another thread, but Ed Oliver is actually smaller than the Davis twins, and dominated as a 3-4 at NG. Aaron Donald basically had the exact same write-up as the Davis twins for his combine where they stated “not a 3-4 guy, best suited for a 3 technique in a 4-3.” Well, he didn’t earn defensive player of the year in the NFL until Wade Philips brought the 3-4 to the Rams where he thrived. I also find it funny people think we just can’t recruit OLBs and NGs to Nebraska. Well… we got the #1 NG on our board for 2020 in Nash Hutmacher, and if Diaco/Riley wouldn’t have messed things up, the starter for Wisconsin’s top10 defense from last year lived about 10 minutes from Memorial Stadium. We can get NGs. But what about OLB? Think about Luke Gifford only playing one full season at OLB, and in that season gaining honorable mention all B1G. Again, grew up about 10 minutes from where we play on Saturdays. You then look at a guy like JoJo Domann who may be our best defensive player, and it’s not hard to see that the two positions people say we can’t recruit actually aren’t that difficult. Hell, our noseguards could all be from a 250 mile radius. All I’m getting at is you have to adapt what you are doing to your players strengths, something I think we didn’t do as much as we could last year. It doesn’t get more athletic on the DL than the Davis twins, and at NG with Darrion Daniels it doesn’t get quicker, but leaving them in 2 gapping much of the time left our fans thinking they were getting owned or not good. The things they do didn’t show up in the stat sheet (although Khalil Davis was a top 20 DL in sacks for 2019). All of the negativity there reminds me of when everyone couldn’ t wait for Tommy Armstrong to leave, sometimes you have to be gone before people appreciate what you bring.

But let’s go half full with the glass here… I’m hoping that the sum of the parts as a whole will elevate the defense, even though I believe we take a big step back on the DL this year. I think we have talent at LB and in the defensive backfield, so can they get it done and pick up the slack? I’m hoping so, but the gap reads are going to be much more difficult for them this year compared to 2019, and we will be starting Honas/Miller against Purdue with the new guys sprinkled in. Now I do say that with an asterisk, because I’m wondering if a guy like Greene or Mauga-Clements can get on the field against these spread teams? Let’s just dive into the positions, it’s all a guessing game anyway.

Defensive Line

Returning: Ben Stille, Deontre Thomas, Damion Daniels, Chris Walker, Jahkeem Green, Tate Wildeman, Casey Rogers, Mosai Newsom, Ty Robinson

Recruits: Marquis Black, Nash Hutmacher, Pheldarius Payne, Jordon Riley

We lose 3 guys that went to the combine, but what’s nice is Stille and Thomas did well spelling them last year and even earned some spot starts. I’m not worried that much about DE, we have some pieces there to get it done. Throw in guys like Casey Rogers, Jahkeem Green, Tate Wildeman, Mosai Newsom, and you have options. But Green needs to get in shape, and guys like Wildeman and Rogers were bit with injuries their first year here stunting their development. Pheldarius Payne and Jordon Riley are also guys you can count on at DE who may be able to slide in to NG. At NG, Damion Daniels and Ty Robinson will get the lions share of the snaps. Green, and true freshman Nash Hutmacher will be options as well, but the amount of bodies we have there make it so we can use the 4 game redshirt rule with Hutmacher to put some space between he and Robinson. Riley also can help us at NG, who is an underrated recruit in my opinion. I just worry about Daniels and Greens conditioning, we’ve been wanting DD to get better at that for a few years and it just hasn’t happened. And we are going from 50+ starts with the Davis twins an Daniels, to guys who will be starting for the first time. This will be interesting to watch develop over the spring and fall and who Coach Tuioti leans on.

Linebackers

Returning: Colin Miller, Will Honas, JoJo Domann, Caleb Tannor, Garrett Nelson, David Alston, Jackson Hannah, Jamin Graham, Nick Henrich, Garrett Snodgrass

Recruits: Eva Mauga, Niko Cooper, Keyshawn Greene, Blaise Gunnerson, Jimari Butler

I combined ILB and OLB because we are going to be doing a ton of experimenting with who plays inside and outside like last year. Like OL, this will be fascinating to see what develops. Truly we could start four guys that have some pretty good experience between Domann, Miller, Honas, and Tannor. But is that what’s in the best interest? We struggled on third and longs last year when Miller, Honas, or Barry had to cover backs out of the backfield, so do guys like Greene and Mauga get that weakness out of the offenses cards? Four stars Jackson Hannah and Nick Henrich (who was another freshman bit by a serious injury first year that hopefully didn’t stunt his development) probably will have a big say in what happens this spring. For all of the crap that Dewitt got, I was actually impressed with how different Alex Davis looked from 2018 to 2019. Can he do something like that with Garrett Nelson? Nelson struggled not having his hand on the ground like he did in high school, but he showed flashes of toughness and run stopping that make him a big part of what we want to do against Iowa and Wisconsin. But this is all going to be so tough for our LBs as we lose the 3 experienced guys in front of them. They are “erasers” which basically means if the DL doesn’t hold their gap, they have to quick make up for it and jump to “erase” the mistake in front of them. They now will have a DL not as good at that as Davis x2 and Darrion Daniels was last year. How will that look for us? Year 3 in the system should help a ton there.

Defensive Backs

Returning: Marquel Dismuke, Deontai Williams, Dicaprio Bootle, Cam Taylor-Britt, Quinton Newsome, Braxton Clark, Noa Pola-Gates, Myles Farmer, Javin Wright

Recruits: Henry Gray, Ronald Delancy, Tamon Lynum, Jaiden Francois

The best coach on our staff has the best and deepest room on the team. It’s embarrassing in a good way for him. You have guys like Dismuke and Williams who should be your starters at safety, and a guy like Bootle who will be one of your starters at corner. Cam Taylor-Britt who we have been raving about his ability and upside is somehow already a junior with not as much action on the field as his talents would lend you to believe, but he’s a guy they can trust. Braxton Clark when we moved Bootle to safety last year filled in great at the cornerback spot, and I believe we see him and Britt battle it out for the other corner spot. What will be interesting is what they want to do with their nickle spot. Taylor-Britt and Newsome are big enough and athletic to handle it, but do you want them on the field more? Guys like Pola-Gates who is super skinny since he had a serious injury and wasn’t able to hit the weight room hard, and Wright who had a major injury and had a great frame we were working to see where he could be (OLB or S) make it so they aren’t as advanced as we had hoped right now. But it doesn’t matter when you still have guys like Farmer and the recruits you brought in. I truly think we have one spot open, and the luxury of multiple options to fill them. We will start 3 seniors this year, so all these freshmen and RS freshmen will be jockeying to see who takes over for the many open spots in 2021. We will be more than fine at DB this year, which between the experience and talent here, could cover up for our DL. Remember last year, the Deontai Williams first game season ending shoulder injury put us in a tough spot to where we were even putting Bootle at safety for some games. We won’t have that issue in 2020.

Summary

It’s going to be a fun spring. OL and LB have so many story lines that I’ve outlined, what do we do? Experience and keep our battle tested guys there? Or do we go with the high ceiling new recruits and just deal with it for a year? You have places like RB where your starter is settled, but you have to find viable backups. WR where you are begging for anyone to grab the wheel and be a leader only has 4 scholarship guys there for the spring, how does that change our practices or help/hurt offensive development? In 2018 our line improved all the way thru the season, you could say that about 2019 as well, but for some reason our line pressed the reset button to start 2019, so the improvement just got them back to where we were at the end of the season prior. I don’t see that happening this year. What do we do at LB? Tannor and Domann will run out with the 1s first day of practice, but is there a guy on the inside that can give Tannor a run for his money outside? We will try a lot of options there.

The good news is I’m predicting a Nebraska victory at the spring game this year, so we will start out 1-0 (and 0-1 I suppose).

Several groups will have good competition and others will need to work quickly in the summer and fall to develop that depth.

I just needed some actual football talk. If I see another corona thread I may jab an ice pick in my ear!!!:eek:

Well, you had better get used to it, because for at least the next 2 - 3 months, most talk is going to be on the Coronavirus.

I doubt it will impact the football season (but who knows), but I could easily see the administration cancelling the Spring Game. Actually, at this point, I would guess it is probably more likely it will be cancelled than not.

If we have a fair number of active cases of the Caronavirus in the state at that point, it would be irresponsible of our administration to not cancel the Spring Game. It may even be mandated by then that large gatherings of people would be temporarily illegal.

We rarely agree, but I think you're correct in this regard.

Did anyone else notice that SSO wrote about how he was interested in Dewitt and how he improved Alex Davis and if he would be able to do the same with G Nelson???? I thought maybe it was an old article, but he mentioned Walters being gone. Just strange because a new coach for OLBs would seem to be a bigger deal than what he wrote.

So on the Dline it looks like Damion and Riley at NT, with Deontre, Stille and Ty at DE, with Green flexing. Plenty of length and size there. The other guys will fight for spots on the depth chart.
