I'm not quite ready to give up on Adrian. This year was disappointing, but remember he actually had a higher completion % and QB Rating than Joe Burrow in 2018. Some LSU fans wanted to move on from him after the 29-0 debacle against Alabama last year.

I have not even watched Fields play this year, so I can't really comment on that. I wasn't including Smothers either. (thus the part on ranking what we currently have).

I would say Luke did exactly what he needed to do when his number was called, and all of Husker Nation saw it. He came in, threw that TD pass that the starter could not. I rank him #1, because in that moment of pressure, he did it, proved he could do it.

I absolutely liked watching how the offense ran under Noah. It was like a machine. I had never seen tempo like that out of them, and it looked like a completely different animal that day. Granted Noah may or may not be able to always make it happen when the pressure is on, but he gives it a solid effort every time. He made the others around him better too. I have nothing but major respect for that guy.

Then you have Adrian. I think his first year, he flirted with being a guy that could do #2, but never saw him bow up to a challenge and defeat it. He's had lots of moments where he could show he could do that under pressure, and didn't. We all sort of gave him a pass, as he was a true freshman.

This year, we saw him slip into #3 type of slot. Often hurting the team more than helping. I personally don't think it has anything to do with an injury or weight or even mental types of things. I just believe it has more to do with his personality type. Some guys are ultra competitive, and I don't believe Adrian is like that.

We will see what all happens, but even if Adrian gets his mojo back to looking more like year 1, he still only sits in the #2 slot for me because he still has yet to prove he can handle the pressure and make it happen.

Luke has already achieved that, with very few reps as you pointed out.
You dont like AM?

We shall see. Maybe if he decides to start spending less time at all the after parties and more time worrying about QB play he will turn a corner. He has basically lost a year though.

Only thing I’m going to bother saying is IF Martinez isn’t working hard he will lose his starting spot at QB (assuming it’s still his). Luke McCaffrey looks very hungry for that spot and Logan Smothers isn’t coming here to hold a clip board either. Those 2 alone will push Martinez hard. We shall see what happens come fall and a few games pass. Adrain Martinez won’t be able to just take it easy, keep making mistakes and all that and keep his starting spot. One of those freshmen stars will take it in a hurry.

Both of those freshman are under-sized. That is why they are so committed to AM. He can take the hits and grind of a 150 carry season. Luke looked fine in limited roles but he couldn't make it through a game healthy...Luke will get the time and seasoning that AM should have been afforded...and they call it a sophomore slump for a reason.

I am also ready to move on. He is not a good QB. Cannot throw the ball downfield. Also has problems throwing the swing pass in stride. Throws behind or over receivers a lot.

Hard to believe the dude got a big head when he only won 4 games that first season. Coaches need to reel in the hype it does these kids no favors.

Watch his freshman highlights when he has good receivers, and then imagine when he has an even better surrounding cast.

I’m of the opinion that if AM beats out LM and Smothers, he will become a record setting QB for Nebraska, and the competition will be good for him. If he doesn’t, then LM or Smothers will fall into this “record setting” role sooner than later.

AM is not a bad QB, he shows flashes of elite ness. If he can make it consistent, and show he can show drives in the 4th quarter to win games, is where he will really shine. He hasn’t shown us yet he is capable of being a “winning” QB at the CFB level.

Edit: If you watch the highlights, you will notice that we are often giving up 30+ points on defense and are trailing behind most of the highlights. This 1,000% has to change, and I’m not convinced Frost has the right defensive assistances to make this happen. On the recruiting front we are at about a B-. We are doing okay at CB/S and Linebackers, but Dline recruiting is slacking pretty bad, and those are the trenches. With that said, you see how Lincoln Riley upgrades his DC and then got torched by LSU. So it’s really hard to judge in a short time period.

So a 19-year-old treated like a god by an entire state wasn't able to fully handle the situation as well as, say, Tom Brady or the late Bart Starr?? Would never have guessed that could happen.
So true. And I think it's not all that unusual for players to struggle with that type of thing. For some of the players at NU, just being on the team goes to their head. Even on the horrible teams we've had recently.

Not sure AM size has really helped his durability. He hasn’t made it thru a full season without missing games in 3 years. That’s not a coincidence or a fluke .

Does not take the weight -lifting workouts seriously. That is why the "mostly poor" 20 pound -weight gain is mostly fat.

Whenever you talk to someone close to the program, it's important to realize that it's just one man's opinion. In a program that large, opinions can vary greatly. But the above quote rings true to me. Martinez just did not look good last year. He didn't just look slow. He was slow, especially laterally. The play that stands out to me was that crucial play where Martinez scrambled and instead of trying to juke and outrun a Wisconsin DEFENSIVE LINEMAN who had peeled back into a spy role, Adrian tried to run over him. He hit a brick wall and didn't get the first down.

If AM loses the bad weight (beer weight?) and buys into the weight program, he could come back much lighter and improve on his speed and agility.

What are the odds he was told to try and do that more often this year though? Based on the whole "not be a candy ***" thing.

Lets hope the new weapons are as advertised, then, lets hope everyones fully healthy, then lets have a real competition.
If the above hopefully happens, it's likely AM is a returning starter. If he doesn't compete well enough, and I see no reason why he wouldn't,AM keeps his job.
SF knows if AMs slacking as some have inferred, starting him over say Luke will create a problem within the team itself, and that wont happen.
SF is looking for leaders, no way AM doesnt bust hump to keep his job.

seems a lot of quotes, so not sure where you got this from, but not sure if from 2000 or the original original poster meant 2020.

However, there is one part of your post that I have highlighted in bold, and that will always cause some problems on a team as far as I am concerned. Doesn't matter if it was 1960 or 2019.

It is quite possible there could be change in 2020, but who knows what will happen between then and now.

I do know that another losing season in 2020 would be a real big problem for a lot of people.
Frost is safe no matter what the record is next year. But I can guarantee the heat for him to can assistants will be to much to ignore. The first 2 years we can all chalk it up to rebuild and fixing the MR disaster. By year 3 there is no more excuses, I can't imagine what another losing season would do to husker nation, the fans, the program, and Frosts mentality. Also as far as recruiting goes year 3 is pivotal, recruits are going to be expecting to see progress. "Come be a part of building something great" probably isn't going to work.

I have no idea what will happen, who is safe and who isn't. There are a lot of things that could go wrong too. Continued off the field sexual misconduct stuff or any of a number of potential landmines can derail lots of good intentions. I know he is being given time, but I think Scott needs to put some urgency into winning. We saw how hard they recruited this year and that was very encouraging. They need to develop guys right now. He doesn't have to win a title next year, but he needs a winning record and a good bowl game showing too. Taking out a higher ranked opponent would also be encouraging. 4, 5, or even 6 wins isn't going to cut it anymore from my viewpoint. If you come in with 6 wins in 2020, you're like that guy who is doing just barely enough to get by.

I think we have to get to 7 wins at a min next year. 8 or 9 to take the heat off.

You just sit there and take it as gospel because thats what chuck said...

Look chuck if you don’t want questions and you don’t want us thinking you’re a total quack job then you should probably back hour statements up with how you “know” these things... until then for all we know it’s pure speculation... and by starting with the injury had nothing to do with his performance tends to tell me it is pure misguided speculation... you can’t tell me an injury has nothing to do with affecting performance

I just don't think Frost would put up with any QB not willing to work out and buy-in. The guy was voted captain by the end of fall camp so I don't think too much of this attitude was apparent, at least at that juncture. I do think he was carrying some bad weight and it slowed him down, the incredibly bad snaps and o-line play through 3/4ths of the season attributed to some of his disappointing play, the injuries didn't help either but I do think he was indecisive and that was happening even at the end of the season when the running game was going, snaps were better and o-line had improved.
I still believe he has a higher ceiling than Luke but I need to see some significant improvement to feel good about him as a starting QB.

Lots of good points....

I'm not sold on Frost being the right guy....but, like every other coach in America, he's at the practices...the fans aren't. Therefore, I give them the benefit of the doubt in making personnel/playing time decisions. If Frost has stuck with Martinez, I believe it is because Martinez has shown at practice that he's the best bet. That may change, of course.....but for now, that's the deal.

McCaffrey and Vedral both showed good things when put in during a game...but I think we forget that the other team didn't spend time prepping for them. I've seen lots of backup QBs at every level come into the middle of a game and perform, only to struggle the following week when named the starter (for whatever reason).

The thing that stood out to me in the Indiana game when Vedral & McCaffrey played was how much better the tempo of the offense was. It almost looked like the Frost UCF offense. His fumble was very unfortunate but otherwise Vedral had a 193 QB Rating that game.

Vedral isn't as physically talented, but seems to be better at the mental side - processing things quickly, which Frost says is the most important skill for his QBs. Martinez really struggled with his reads this season and getting the offense set quickly.

I know I'm going to sound like a broken record because I feel like I am repeating myself. But watching the QBs warm up during pregame, AM was seldom the most accurate of the bunch.

First post here but my opinion is lack of competition hurt Martinez this year. Gebbia pushed him and he came out better for it in 18. Last year he knew he was the man and probably didn't have the pressure to push himself. Defenses also knew what to expect from him and could play to his tendencies. Lesson learned, hope he comes out and is the best Martinez to qb NU.

Right now, IMO, Taylor's career is more impressive than Adrians, though he was a much less talented qb. Taylor could get in a groove he and basically carried the team to the conference championship despite a bad defense. AM, I feel needs to get mentally tough.

And yet Tmart was slagged big time by folks on the board. And maybe check the talent level available of skill players available to TMart vs Amart.
Hell, maybe Adrian doesn’t ultimately level up and one of the young kids beats him out. But I doubt it.
