That couldn’t have been the splash hire they had in mind. Some schools are finding the coaching search pretty tough this year. Arkansas can’t even find anyone that will listen.

The P5 schools are refusing to admit that there has been a shift. Money is great for all the P5 schools now...a 32 million dollar deal at Rutgers is the same as a 32 million dollar deal at FSU without the headaches of expectations.

AM figured it out and realized the amount of money you have to offer to get "your guy" but other schools do not want to admit that is the new way. But the schools are trying to dictate the salaries and it doesn't work that way. This is like free agency in sports, once the players realized they had the power, the salaries went up.

Not exactly a splash hire.

He has a similar resumé to Frost when we hired him, only with 2 more years of experience. Both coached in the AAC and had offenses that score a lot. He should be able to get talent easier at FSU than Frost here.

He is a very, very, good coach. He has turned down many D1 programs even some Power 5 teams last year. If he hires the right assistant coaches he could be very successful there.

Good coach. I thought he would probably end up at Ole Miss or Arkansas. FSU fans should be happy with this, but after convincing themselves they were getting Bob Stoops or Brian Kelly, they are probably pissed.

I wanted him if we had whiffed on Frost. Surprised ASU didn’t hire him but his ties to the fired Graham probably hurt his prospects. Great recruiter and relates to kids.

Maybe he’ll take all of his Memphis assistants with him.

Just found out he is the coach at Memphis. Yawn
Appears to be a pretty darned good coach. They might have got it right. I've watched Memphis some and they've looked well coached. I think IF he can deal with the pressure, he might be pretty good there.

He's inheriting a MUCH better roster than Frost did to start with. He'll get a top flight QB right away too I would bet that will fit his offense.

Norvell is a great offensive coach. He will be successful at FSU. Remember FSU is really only competing with Clemson in the ACC... so should be in the mix year after year.

Not sure that Mizzou, Arkansas, and FSU upgraded that much to justify their costs. Maybe Arkansas didn't have a choice, but FSU has essentially paid about $40mil to hire Mike Norvell.

If you told me Urban Meyer than maybe $40mil is worth it, but the Memphis coach. I'm not so sure

FSU didn't have much choice in canning their coach. Their internal problems are really bad and weren't fixable by that staff. I think Arkansas and Mizzou screwed up. Nothing would make me happier than to see both of those schools be crappy for decades. We can recruit Missouri.

Splash hires are few and far between. Young coaches like Campbell, Rhule, and Fleck all chose to stay at programs not on par with FSU because of something called job security. They know they can make good to great money at places without the prestige, but also without the stress of coaching at a place with heightened expectations.

Winning 7 games at Iowa State gets you an extension, and pay raise. No matter what people will commend Campbell because he is winning more than he is losing at Iowa State. 7 wins would get you the hot seat at Florida State. 9 wins gets you fired at Nebraska.

Splash hires? What is that anymore? Nick Saban isn't leaving Alabama. Urban Meyer isn't likely to return anytime soon. Bob Stoops isn't coming back either most likely. So what is a splash hire? Jimbo Fisher, Brian Kelly? Like it or not, the era of splash hires is a pipe dream. Ohio State has hired Jim Tressel, and Ryan Day as their last two coaches sandwiching the Urban Meyer hire, which was gift wrapped for them.

USC hired Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkasian, and Clay Helton. Not exactly big names.

Notre Dame hired Brian Kelly from Cincy. Texas hired Tom Herman from Houston. Not exactly splash hires.

Michigan got gift wrapped a splash hire in Harbaugh, but before that they hired Brady Hoke. Dabo Sweeney was a wide receiver coach nobody heard of.

So when I hear splash hire I just can't help but laugh. Before their gigs at the elite institutions they would later run , I bet you wouldn't say Jim Tressel, Ryan Day, Tom Herman, Brian Kelly, Clay Helton, Steve Sarkasian, Dabo Sweeney, or Brady Hole were splash hires. That term is akin to finding a unicorn. They don't exist..

FSU fans were delusional, outside of Stoops they were going to be disappointed .

Power 5 coaches rarely leave for other jobs now . When Nebraska, USC, Texas, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, Florida, or any other top level job can't get guys from Baylor, TCU, Iowa State, Minnesota, or Kentucky you know the term splash hire is overused.

Ummm..ok...but Frost certainly was a splash hire :p And spending $40M on Norvell just looks like putting lipstick on a pig.

It's amazing every job in this country was and Isis a waaaaaay better job to inherit let Nebraska tell it. They start making excuses for winning even before a coach coaches his first game now.

I know plenty of FSU people and followers and the last thing they believe is they have a good roster. They think Jumbo left the program in shambles!

Players weren't going to class, coaches versus the players, scandals, starting QB got kicked off the team, players leaving and infighting. I showed a couple of em your post and they say you have NO IDEA what you talking bout.

If that guy wins fast they say it will be a MIRACLE!!

I'm not talking culture. That was WHY their most recent coach had to go. I'm talking PURE TALENT. Speed most importantly already on their roster. I agree their PROGRAM is a mess. The difference is they have more talent within 50 miles of their campus than we do within 500.

Great talent being in the area....you are very correct. That athletic department is pathetic tho, very weak AD, roster's a mess, Jimbo dumped on them, boosters running the asylum. It leaves alot to be desired....
