Storylines for offseason

So, thought it would be interesting to think of some storylines that we will see going into the offseason:

1. QB competition
Martinez vs. McCaffrey vs. Vedral vs. Smothers
This one is scary. We all love what we saw in 2018 from Adrian Martinez, but for whatever reason, he lost confidence in himself this season. I don’t know what has happened behind the scenes, but hopefully Martinez can regain his 2018 form this spring.

McCaffrey is a stud, he plays with an edge that Nebraska needs from their quarterback. He will have to develop a bit more physically.

Logan Smothers is coming into a little bit of a logjam, but I think he could compete at quarterback as well. His athleticism and ability to throw the ball are impressive.

2. Coaching changes
I don’t think you will see a change at DC. Chinander is not going anywhere.
I think the change could happen at OC/WR, as it seems as if Troy Walters would most likely want an opportunity to grow and have more control over an offense or a team.

3. Recruiting/Transfers
How does the staff finish the cycle?
Is Omar Manning still a possibility?
Nebraska needs some next level wide receivers, and I think Manning should be the #1 guy on Nebraska’s board if we want to see a true Scott Frost offense.

4. Incoming/Redshirt contributors
Which incoming guys or redshirts have the potential to make an impact on the 2020 team?
  • Marvin Scott- has the physical build/strength to be one of the 2 guys at RB next fall. Should be interesting to see how he fits.
  • The linebackers (Heinrich, Hannah, Reimers- don’t think he redshirted, Gunnerson, Hodge)- Nebraska will have to replace Mo Barry, who struggled this season. Hopefully Coach Ruud can find an upgrade in this bunch. Reimers showed flashes this season.
  • Wide Receivers (Nance, Chase, Betts, Nixon, Houston)- The challenge at WR always seems to be finding a playmaker that can also block for other playmakers. We will find out in the spring which one of these receivers has the necessary combination of athleticism and physicality
  • Bryce Benhart- The transition of Benhart to right tackle seems to be inevitable, moving Farniok to Right Guard. Will be interesting to see how Benhart develops this winter/spring.
  • Those big, long defensive linemen (Rogers, Robinson, Hutmacher)- Really interested to see what the defensive line looks like with these guys. The big question will be which one of these guys can play behind Damion Daniels at the Nose position. Will it be Hutmacher? Robinson? Keem Green? They will need to find someone to spell Daniels.
5. The status of the departed-
Will Maurice Washington, Katerion Legrone, or Andre Hunt be back on the team? Washington’s on-field impact is tremendous, but I think this ship has sailed. If Washington returns to Lincoln this winter/spring, it will be a surprise, and is sure to cause a bit of controversy.

In no specific order:

- recruiting class

- which redshirting players will contribute or surprise to become starters

- LB talent, WR deep threat, and DL depth

- attrition, which happens every year.

- changes to the recruiting style. Focus on getting more commits before the season starts.

- do any of the suspended players return?

- replacing a departed member of the coaching staff (by choice or not).

- transfers coming in. We will take some.

Will Frost learn how to win tough games???

will he learn to keep going to what works??

Will we have any success with special teams??

will he start a QB that is capable of playing in this Conf??

Will he ever develop a rhythm on offense that works for more than a Q?

I did like the improvement of our OL through the year. I don’t like our QB at this point. He sucks. Blame the WR all you want but just put a fast guy back there and run the ball for f##ks sake.

Will we ever utilize our TEs??? What is the deal with this? They are good players and are rarely used

I’m not seeing any amazing qualities from a play calling standpoint. Maybe that starts next year?

meh, waste of a year but I’ll be back next year and I’ll probably whine some more this year too

If Luke wins the job, Martinez will transfer. Then our QB depth is shaky with Luke, Vedral (not good), then Smothers. Let’s say Luke gets injured before that tough stretch to finish the year and it could get ugly. Mike Riley is looking to have more wins than Frost his first 3 seasons.

This works both ways.. Luke has nothing but good film and could transfer too. Would rather have aidrien leave tbh.

Need more passing TD's should be a storyline. Was just reviewing the stats for the season and we only threw 12 passing TD's all year long. WOW that is bad.

We have to massively improve with WR talent. We are lucky to even win 5 games with only 12 passing TD's.

The ‘more td passes needed’ view point isn’t an offseason thing is it? Isn’t that covered in recruiting/newcomers?

Yeah. I would take Luke too. But I feel Frost has a soft spot for Martinez since Frost went through the criticism from fans as well when he played. I think he will protect Adrian by starting him to start the year but Luke will play as well. Kind of like Tua and Jalen Hurts at Alabama. But man that end of the year schedule is brutal.

I don’t think that’s the sentiment, but if it is Scott frost should be fired.

Look how he defended him to the media throughout the year. It was almost like Frost took it too personally when Adrian was criticized.
He knows what Martinez has dealt with injury wise. He's had 2 significant injuries he's dealt with the whole year. One supposedly will require off season surgery. McCaffrey and Vedral have been banged up too. It's been a tough year on QBs at NU.

Storylines for the off-season?

- Frost will proclaim that he has never seen a group come together like the one coming up and that he can’t wait for the season to begin.

- Puffdaddy Duval will post pics of guys lifting weights like they did on the 70’s proclaiming how physically dominating they will be.

- We will year about great new recruits and transfers that ultimately do not produce.

- A few players will flap their jaws that we will be in the B1G championship and will beat Iowa, while getting their *** spanked live on national TV.

- We will hear how every position is an open competition and they best player to help the team win will play.

- We will hear how we have a group of captains that will lead and bring out the best in the team.

In other words, we will win the off-season, just like we did last year.

And there are several here that will suck that koolaid down just like we all did last year.

Don’t forget we will row some boats and make a bunch of hype videos with ugly mullets.

This offseason we just need two semi out of shape players (waldoch and Armstrong?) to make a boat video on a catamaran. Get two females on that boat and make a ****** rap video. That way we don’t spend all offseason drooling about these hype videos and twitter pics of someone squatting 3 hundo.

So will Bill Moos say the goal is 6-6 again? Pretty low standards for Nebraska especially paying 5 million.

None of this matters if Frost and his troops dont figure out how to manage the roster. This team plays with a better attitude when McCaffery is in the game. Im guessing they have more confidence in him. Put him on the field more often. Mills has proven he can run up the middle, get him, McCaffery and WanDale on the field at the same time along with JD. Guard 4 of them at the same time. Good luck.

Defensively, teach them to tackle with heads up and not looking at the ground.

Gopher fans seem to think Spielman wants to go back to the State of Minnesota. Can't say I'd blame him.

Either way he's still made horrible decisions and has played with zero confidence. Even if he's injured, there's no excuse for either of those.

And what transfer portal surprises?

Surprises? I'll say Tannor and Pola-Gates.

Spielman will grad transfer.

Other transfers that wouldn't surprise me - David Alston, Jaylin Bradley, Jaevon McQuitty.

There will be no QB Competition. Frost didn't even consider benching Martinez today after McCaffrey's TD. Frost is still butt-hurt about 1996 and he's taking it out on this team.

This time of night after a loss, the stupor of drink and the misery of self pity start to get a wee bit rank.
