I mean, it's cool to be optimistic, but there's been zero evidence that the program is headed in the right direction. Not sure where you're getting this grand vision of a successful SF tenure from. It certainly isn't based on any actual results.
Dingle explains it very well, the 3 recruiting classes under Mike Riley were a disaster. Just take a moment and think about what the task coach frost really inherited. Imo we’re dam lucky he took the job. It’s going to take little longer than most people want, but I truly believe he’ll get the job done
You're looking strictly at the W/L record. I see progress on offense. I see young O linemen getting much better . I see a very explosive offense that can score on anybody. On D I see a lack of talent and depth at linebacker and costly injuries at safety. BUT I also see very talented young guys being developed there. AT TIMES, I see things from our defense that I like. We HAVE to get more consistent play though from them and find a better kicker and punter. Heck just look at some of the guys who have come in and played as true freshmen lately.
Part of the reason they were a disaster is that Frost alienated a lot of the players, didn't get their buy-in, and had a bunch transfer. Hell, he's even had quite a few of his own highly regarded recruits transfer out already. Miles Jones, the two 4* Safeties, Bell, etc. That's an indication that he might not be handling things right.
It's all about the W/L, man. It's the only yardstick that matters.
We beat Iowa and perform decently in a bowl game then that is some real, tangible evidence that things are improving.
Short term it's the only yardstick that matters. IF you're looking for a long term coaching solution, I think that worrying too much about short term return on your investment is foolish. JMHO. Saban was mediocre at best at MSU. NOBODY back then would have predicted what he's done at Alabama.
The guys that left did so because they either weren't starting OR weren't even going to play. This roster needed a kick in the butt and they got it. Surely you can't be crying over losing Bell or Jones. Jones has talent but he couldn't learn his job. Safeties? Beat out and realized the freshmen we brought in were always going to play in front of them.

MSU was under sanctions when he coached there and he still led the team to a better record than they had previously. He was never a mediocre coach. LSU thought he was a good coach, that's why they hired him and it didn't take him long to have success there.

LSU was a dumpster fire when they hired him but yes he was a good coach. Great coach? Not then. Did you think he would become what he's become? He looked pretty bad when we kicked the crap out of MSU back then. Husker fans would have lost their minds IF we had hired him instead of Frank. I think virtually every Husker fan back then was in favor of promoting Frank.
I would have to look at participation reports. I didn't say they were playing this year. We've got several listed at corner who are likely going to end up at safety. When you get beat out by a walk on safety, there's yer sign. IF you don't want to put the work in, then you should pack your bags and they did.

Criticism of the staff is warranted based on W/L results thus far and just overall frustration built over the last 20 years, yes. Saying we will now be outcoached by Rutgers when Schiano talks started & MD will whoop our *** pre-game, however, is not criticism. It's blind hate. Glad you all see what I do about this 'straight shooter'.
The coaches have done a ***** job so far. The team has sucked badly. That is indisputable. There is no evidence to the contrary.

W/L is the only thing that matters. Things like recruiting success can give hope, but while this extremely important class started strong, it has floundered big time.
Hopefully your not a farmer or become one, you have to be optimistic to be one. You and I have had a couple little spat’s but I respect your opinions you seem to be a pretty decent guy. He has more access to the program than you do I can assure you that. I have not heard the Frost part, but it hasn’t really been a secret around Lincoln that JD may be on the way out after this year.
So you are saying JD will be here next year? Hope you’re right. If not, I’m afraid inexperience will surely be the excuse for next year if the offense falters again.

I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, that's part of what makes a message board enjoyable. An echo chamber with everyone in lock-step is no fun. Leading up to the season it was pretty much a Kool aid guzzling circle-jerk and when myself and others voiced opinions encouraging some brake pumping, people lost their damn minds and got pretty nasty. I think that's why I feel the need to confront the evil on the board.

If they take another guy that is in a similar mode of McCaffrey and Smothers, that tells me Frost is going to create a long-term vision of a powerful QB run game to go with an electric passing game that spreads the field.
That would be the smart attack, IMO. Wisconsin has shown over the last several years they can't stop an offense with a good, mobile QB that can hit the edges. NW can't stop it either.

I agree that this is where Frost is headed. And I applaud it. Also, you are correct that Wisconsin and NW cannot stop a running QB. The fact is.... very, very few teams can. If you have a really good dual threat QB, and you surround that guy with talent on the line and in the skill positions, it is deadly. Nobody can stop it.
QB recruiting is one thing that has gone well under Frost. Was really impressed with Martinez (until this year), and really like Luke and Smothers. Having a dynamic runner at QB is important. Now, if we could just get WR squared away!!

FWIW I don’t necessarily have that gut feeling about Scott but my gut isn’t sending out the opposite signal either. However, it may be a very, very long road until we are the glamour team in college football again if it does happen.

Lamar "not our" Jackson is tearing up the NFL. Need to recruit guys like him. And return to the option game.
I don't know that returning to the option game is the right way to go about it. Incorporating it into the offense like Frost has shown he can do is a good thing though.
Edit: plus, Lamar didn't really run the "option" at Louisville, either.

I agree. But a lot depends on what you mean by "the option game". The zone read running game is a form of the option too. It just doesn't involve "pitching the ball" at the last second to a trailing running back. If you mean the latter by the word "option" I see it as just one element of a much broader offense. Even Osborne's offense was not a pure option as we see today in the service academies or with the old OU teams. He had all kinds of different formations and "running the option" with the running back trailing the QB was just one formation of many.

Former Navy/G Tech coach Paul Johnson is on the Ravens staff, and they are definitely incorporating some awesome new-look option schemes weekly.
Fun to watch.
We need an identity. The zone read option is vanilla these days. Everyone runs it and defenses are figuring it out. Zig when everyone else zags. Maybe not full blown service academy style, but enough to make it a mainstay of our offense.
What I noticed is that Frost is adding more "option" attack but not exactly the way TO did it. For one he isn't relying on a TE to get the edge block and no fullback. He is going to use athletes to be more explosive.
