My thoughts on how to fix this

Here is my very non professional, completely opinion based logic on how to go about maybe fixing this.

1. Chinander has to go, I get the bend don't break D. I get that this up tempo offense put D in a bind. You can't allow 30+ points every game. The problems is that mentality worked fine in a crappy AAC where you could get a few take aways and outscore them. In a league like the BIG10 you have to at least have a competent D. The odds you are going to be able to put up 40+ every games probably isn't going to happen when you are playing against top 10 Ds every week.

2. Dewitt has to be let go. I understand he has been battling health issues, so in all fairness he probably hasn't been able to put in the hours needed. The Special teams and LB are by far some of the worse areas on this team.

3. Frost needs to be an HC over all the units and not just the offensive side of the ball. He either needs to let Walters be an actual OC or he needs to hire one. There is a reason most teams have an OC and DC. It is so the HC can focus on all sides and manage the game.

4. I do think there is still a MR mentality on these upper class men. This, I think Frost is trying to do already and as quickly as possible. He needs to get those guys out and off this team as quickly as possible. As has been going around twitter, Frost said Carlos Davis told them before the game he wasn't healthy enough to play today. This is the type of stuff we have basically been hearing while MR was here. You don't want to lift, don't lift. You don't want to play, don't play.

5. Recruit Recruit Recruit. Frost is attempting to bring back the walk on program. I love the idea of this. However, if anyone thinks this is going to turn around on the back of the walk on program people will probably be disappointed. Also going after mainly "under the radar" hard working 3 star kids, probably isn't going to cut it. Yes Iowa, and Wisc have shown you can have success with that. History says if you want to consistently win conf championships and contend for a NC you need to have top 10 classes. Look and Wyatt Mazour you won't find a harder working kid, but heart only goes so far. You have to have a team full of God given, talented athletes as well.

6. Martinez, I saw Frost finally made a comment maybe confirming something we have all suspected. " Adrian hasn't been 100% health all year and has been dealing with a lot." If he has been battling injury that is completely different and gives me hope he can be the QB we saw last year. If not Frost needs move on and move on quick this off season and into fall camp. Between Vedral, Mccaffrey, and Smothers there better be a strong QB competition.

7. TIME/ and Patience. We as fans have to be patient and not run him out of town too soon. I think most of us knew this wasn't going to be fixed completely in 2 years. I don't think any thought we would still be this bad and showing little to no progress. I love that Frost was given and extension. It shows to the players, the fans and most importantly recruits that this is our guy for the long haul. This program needs HC stability, anyone calling for him to be fired is an idiot. He needs time to get a full team of his players. He needs time to figure out how to succeed and adapt to the BIG10.

I’m with you an all of them except #3. Frost is a great offensive mind and play caller (it’s my option no need to hijack the thread arguing about it). He just needs a good enough DC, that can handle his job, so Frost doesn’t have to micromanage it.

I'll give Chinander and Dewitt another year. Defensive scheme wasn't too bad today. We just can't tackle and seem to ride people to the ground instead of dropping people. Too many lunges and whiffs. Dewitt has the shortest leash for me right now. But wouldn't change anything right now. Recruiting or lack of closing might change my mind. We desperately have holes that need to be filled fast

Maybe not Dewitt. Feel bad about the cancer but he seems to be a very weak link, especially in recruiting

ST have been piss poor. Frost needs to give way more attn to it. It's cost us close games and will continue to.

I think Chins got dealt a bad hand. We need to outscore people until the talent gets upgraded on D. We can't bc the offense has stunk most of the year.

Hopefully our coaching in training gets it figured out. If he doesn’t, it’s just more of the same, cause he’s going nowhere. Right now, PennsyHusker looks like the only smart one on this board.

I will still voice my questions though:
  • Why did Mills only run the ball 4 times in 2nd half when he is averaging 11yds per rush?
  • Does "No Fear of Failure" cover an attitude of "Giving up less than 30 is ok"?
  • What the heck is going on with AM2?
I thought the team played with heart today and never quit. That is improvement.

Defense showed up? We gave up 37 points. There's crappy offenses all over the country as well as in this conference. Yet even without having top offenses on those teams and putting their defense in bad situations, the Big 10 still has had several top 10 defenses. It doesn't really matter what situation the defense faces, their job is to stop the offense. Our defense isn't very good at getting stops in general but it gets even worse in critical situations. Our defense had several chances to get a stop and change the game but they couldn't do it. Frankly as long as Chinander is here I don't see that changing.

Frost doesn't need to micromanage the defense, but he does need to have more oversight of it. I agree with you Frost is a great offensive mind and playcaller. We don't need an offensive coordinator to call plays imo.

We can split hairs and debate O vs D but I didn't think either one were good enough to win today. The offense moved the ball at times but ultimately left a ton of points on the field. I had to cover my face at times for a respite from watching Taylor move 5-6 guys down the field because they literally couldn't bring him down. Meh.

Dude, it’s obvious we are struggling majorly on D and ST. No need to discuss. Something needs to be done. It’s the same **** we’ve seen through Riley to today. We look bad against bad teams in each of these depts. I’m not worried about the offense other than some play calls. Our D and ST will get us buried in this conf. We are playing against too many good staffs to struggle with these two facets

He is my very non professional, completely opinion based logic on how to go about maybe fixing this.

Reflects special teams bc it is special teams. Defense wasn't great by any stretch, they gave up 300 yards rushing. Not surprising knowing what we know about this defense and Daniels being out.

What? How does that reflect defense?
If KO coverage or punt coverage give up a touchdown, it counts against the defense. It's the same as any team in the country. Most of the guys on coverage teams are on the 2 deep on defense. Some might even be starting. We have the same exact problems of not being able to tackle on special teams as we do on defense. It's obvious to me our special teams coverage play reflects our defense. It's the same for most teams around the country too.

So everybody is a defensive player?

this system's success is highly depended on how the QB does.. Scott has even said so back when he was being hired. Make sure the new guy is a competitor first.

if you keep the current guy, nothing will change and in two more years, no one is going to care anymore.

we could be approaching that threshold already.
I think Adrian holds on to the ball too long but blaming him for the entire shitshow is too much. At this point he should be a one read then take off guy. If we had a traditional run game and better defense he'd be fine.
