I agree, on paper and all things considered. This should be an easy win. We have better players, better overall talent, better coaching staff, more experienced coaching staff (by far). I know some say if we lose it isn't that big of deal. For a conference standpoint no it really doesn't matter. From the overall health of the program it matters a lot. This is a game that Frost should not lose if he has the ship pointed in the right direction. No excuse, and yes if we do lose there will be excuses...... Riley, trashed the program so bad, it is going to take years to rebuild. We have tons of young talent. While all very much true. This is still a game that should be won. Year 2 these type of games should be almost expected wins. Im not one of those that demands results now. I am willing to let Frost build this the right way. Im not expecting wins against teams like Ohio St, or WIsc or even Iowa year 2. We have to starting winning these type of games against vastly inferior opponents and coaches. The question was is this the most important game THUS FAR ...
Those citing future games are changing the question
Dating back to the 2006 season - Colorado has had a total of one winning season in this time span
We should absolutely win this game. No one is calling for anyone to be on the hot seat if we lose, but perhaps Moos could subtract what Colorado's coaching staff is being paid from what our staff is making and the difference be considered a generous donation by our staff to the facilities upgrade.
Also maybe put a bit aside to host CUs staff over the summer to provide some mentoring.
People are way too uptight about this game. Go back and look at CUs history, the coaching resumes of their staff compared to ours. The price the market commanded for their staff versus ours. And then go back and look at last years game and realize they are starting over and in game 2 as opposed our staff being in year 2.
I can see why wins over Iowa or Wisconsin this year might have been marked in pencil but the Colorado game has been labeled a W in permanent ink since the middle of last season.
My gosh - people are so afraid to set even the lowest of expectations for this program for fear they might fall short.
That's fine, but NW last year is certainly the exception and not the rule. CU is a straight up bad football team. Lose tomorrow and there's some serious concerns about this year's team moving forward.this makes little to no sense.
as many have referenced, Northwestern, not 12 months ago, lost every non-con game on their schedule only to go on and win the West.
so, with that in mind, this game is big in that it will either make us 2-0 with a national ranking or 1-1 and drop out of the top 25. that's all.

I agree with all of this. I'm glad you're cocky about it because I still have my doubts about this game.
I'm just remaining patient on the staff. If we lose this game, so be it. I still believe this team needs to grow, a lot. A lot. I'm not drinking kool aid any more. I manage my expectations now. I have to be honest with who Nebraska has become. I don't see this as a team, YET, that can just go out and beat who they're supposed to. I'd love for them to change my mind.
In the back of my mind I somewhat feel that way too, but Im trying to think of valid reasons why? Is it just the inexperience and youth? Is it the poor S&C for 3 years that will take time to rebuild? Is it the coaches trying to figure out what works and doesn't work in the BIG10? In my mind I just cant fathom Nebraska had fallen to bottom of the ncaa pack? Indiana, KU, and CU levels. That it could take 3, 4 or 5 years to rebuild and finally get to winning again. We have still recruited top 25 talent almost every year. With Frost at the helm, year 2, I would think bare min that should be enough to beat out lesser teams like Southern Bama handily and CU with a new coach and way less talent. If this year heaven forbid goes south. I wonder how long the excuses for why we keep losing, are valid.I agree with all of this. I have great faith that if we hired the quality of coach that we and the national media have all proclaimed then it should not require dipping into any of the Kook aid stash to envision being a huge favorite to win this game. I agree if some are having doubts about the ability of this staff then they might be fearful when going against one of the worst power 5 teams in the last decade and half

we finished the last half of the year 4-2. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who would be throwing out a bunch of caution about the prospects of playing Colorado at the end of last year.
Our staff has had another offseason of S+C, a spring and fall camp and their staff is in their 1st year and very inexperienced - win the game
4-2 misleading. There is almost zero chance we beat Michigan state in a normal weather environment considering our defense had allowed 30 points in 20 straight power 5 contests. And another win was against BC...so not actually a real opponent. We started 0-6 so any wins showed improvement but the most impressive wins had to be considered illinois and minnesota...not the stuff of high expectations.

A loss to CU would represent a data point in the wrong direction in the ongoing evalution of the Frost hire. A legit national coach of the year whose success is translatable from mid major to power 5 should not be losing to a Colorado program 2 games into their own rebuild.
I understand upsets can happen and if we finish with 8-10 wins then a loss to CU could be chalked up to an unfortunate upset but I’m not sure it would bode well for the rest of the season.
In the event of a loss to CU I’m not buying a narrative heavy on blaming Riley, culture and all the other things we heard in the midst of a 4-8 season.
A nice win tomorrow would provide the first evidence that we have an upgrade from Riley which up to now all of us have been certain.
what if we win?
This is where expectations from fans and media can hurt the trajectory of a program. 1. 5 star...Ryan Day...basically given the best players in the country who have won, expect to win, with a ready made system already in place.
2. 4 star...Urban Meyer...Takes over for a coach that shouldn't have been fired but falls into a great situation only needing slight improvements in system and recruiting
3. 3 Star...Bob Stoops...takes over for a team with a poor record but with multiple good to great recruiting classes...needs to improve attitude, system but can win right away.
4. 2 star...Scott Frost UCF/or Bo Pelini NU...complete dumpster fire but previous coach quits or the firing is extremely logical and so team is ready to buy in to new coach...also recent success or good recruiting classes has stocked the cupboard with more talent than the rest of the conference.
5. 1 star...Scott Frost Nu: complete bottoming out of program due to multiple system changes, and multiple coaches in a short time span. Most recent coach was given less than a complete recruiting cycle and classes are weak, unfilled..resistance from current team also exists because fired coach is perceived as not having a chance...high attrition occurs and buy in is slow.
Can you imagine Scott Frost with Bo Pelini's situation? Or Urban Meyer's or Ryan Day's. He was given an awful situation...we haven't played like Nebraska since 2011...so treating us with Nebraska expectations is stupid. The loss of 34 players hurts a ton and will hurt for 4 years...
You make valid points and I agree with almost all. As far as the CU game goes. Based on your star ranking. I would also put CU at that 1 star level. Now to add to that they also have a year 1 HC with zero HC experience. CU is a bad football team with much going against it right now. I know what Frost walked into was a dumpster fire, but so is what Mel tucker walked into. We have a program who is a year ahead of where they are with a more seasoned HC and staff. We need to start seeing this team and Frost taking baby steps forward. CU should be one of those baby steps. This is where expectations from fans and media can hurt the trajectory of a program. The loss of 34 players hurts a ton and will hurt for 4 years...the 2021 team will be Frost's team...he should win 9+ games at that point...be disciplined, and play smart. Fans just aren't patient enough and are so impulsive that they think 18 months is enough time to rebuild a winning program. They see the N on the helmet and realize all their happiness rides on the success of these young men and they lose it. Be patient, cheer on your team..if the team is still inconsistent and careless in two years then flip your ****.
Dating back to 2011 we had won 9 or more games 5 of the 7 seasons prior to frost taking over. Colorado has had one winning season since 2006. No one is asking for miracles but the list of coaches who could have went 4-8 last year and be 1-0 going into this years Colorado game is very very long and includes Mike Riley - it is time to start seeing some separation. Our coach is the 2nd highest paid coach in the conference with a QB that has been mentioned as a heisman contender - it isn’t too much to expect to at least be decent in year 2.
Jeff Brohm took over a team that had won a total of 3 big ten games in the prior 4 seasons and has taken them to back to back bowl games. Frost would have to win 9 games this year to match Brohms win total his first 2 years
Get out of here with this isn’t Frosts team until 2021 ... that’s ridiculous
"in life there is a scoreboard ..." Scott Frost
See this is the problem...lets say AM doesn't get his leg twisted and we beat colorado and Troy last year. We finish with 6 wins and go to a bowl game. Does that mean the team was better? Does that mean Frost was better? No...it just means we were slightly healthier and could beat the few pathetic teams on our schedule. Bo felt the pressure to win immediately because we are "Nebraska". So instead of performing a full rebuild, which was needed, he kept the offensive staff on board to win a few extra games in year 1 and 2. Of course the lack of vision and direction was a staple of his tenure but it meant we never gelled on offense and defense at the same time. Frost could have diminished attrition and instituted some policies to keep some of the 34 lost kids on board. He decided to start at square 1...that certainly pushed away some kids who are starting at other D1 schools. Frost has literally no junior class and his senior class is very weak. It is pretty hard to win without your two most important classes being even half full of participants. These aren't excuses, they are reality. His best talent is young, that is a great sign, but idiotic fans "expecting" these kids to win a random number of games doesn't help them reach heights that actually matter. The team is what it is...no kids are playing half ***, or jacking around...it is highly likely they just aren't that good yet..a few are..but most are transfers or Riley hold overs.
Jay Johnson OC-Johnson, 49, is a veteran coach and administrator of 24 seasons, including nine as an offensive coordinator at three previous Football Bowl Subdivision institutions in addition to coaching quarterbacks, running backs and tight ends as a position coach. He came to Colorado from the University of Georgia, where he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the offensive analyst for quality control. As I have said numerous times - this game is very big
You can’t explain away a 4-8 inaugural season to growing pains, as has been done by the fan base, and then lose to a program in almost the same situation we were in last year with the exception of their coaching staff being extremely green
No prior head coach experience
Off and Def coordinators are promoted analysts for quality the last couple of years.
Yeah, kind of answered that to the other fella. Next year, we should be beating lesser opponents. His recruits will now become upperclassmen and be on their 3rd year in the system, plus adding dynamic underclassmen along the way.
I could be entirely wrong, but this year is a tweener for me. I doubt we'll win 10 games but could see it. I also doubt we'll win less than six, but heaven forbid I can see that too.
I guarantee your expectations haven't been met since 2010. That is a very sad existence for a fan. To me it is the definition of crazy to place yourself in the path of misery expecting something to happen that hasn't happened in nearly a decade. Hopefully you are happy tomorrow.Great - so the narrative that is already locked and loaded just in case we happen to lose tomorrow is that Frost is building the right way while the CU staff must just be interested in short term gains.
Man I hope that by the time Frost retires he has us in a position where we can consistently be bowl eligible. What a turn around that would be.
I didn’t think it was possible to set the bar any lower but man you actually digging a trench just so it can be as low as possible.
I agree that beating Colorado should be expected because they are bad. Hopefully we can see what others see as the potential of the team, it did not show whatsoever last Saturday. . College football is becoming more and more like the NFL. Any team can beat or at least hang with any other team. Back in the day there were 10 maybe 15 top programs all others couldn't compete. Nebraska was lucky enough to be in that top group. Now days there are 1 or 2 top teams and all others are pretty equal.I agree that beating Colorado should be expected because they are bad.
