If AM2 leaves early for NFL draft...

Let's assume AM2 is as good as advertised. If he leaves for the NFL draft after next season, his Junior year, who would you like to be his replacement. This is the only way I see Noah Vestal ever getting significant playing time. Now they are in the same class on the field, so the only way he has a shot at being a starter is if AM2 leaves early. He would be a fifth year senior and a home grown prospect. Maybe by that time Luke is ready for the job? What are your thoughts?

As long as Frost and Coach Verduzco are here our QBs will always be solid. I have a feeling that they will take a QB in every class, so for now it would likely be McCaffery in 2021 ( year 3 in the system for him) and then Smothers (year 2 in the system for him). But who knows. If we get another dynamic true freshman in the 2021 class, it could be that guy. No matter what it will be the best guy who gives us the best chance to win.

I dont even want to think about this until next year. I dont think Vedral is a viable #1, not sure about McCaffery. Thing is neither of them have really had a chance to show their stuff yet. Vedral didnt prep to play last year, and it showed when he got in the game. Luke hasnt even held a clipboard yet.

Even then I doubt Vedral plays. I think Mcaffery for sure, and Smothers possibly pass him on depth chart by that time.

Highly regarded QBs tend to transfer if they don’t play early in their career. So having Vedral in the fold is a good thing in that respect, because what looks like a deep position today might not be tomorrow. But whether Martinez stays 3 years or 4 years or gives up football tomorrow, I just don’t see Vedral being the #1.
That is a good point, I don't see him leaving, even if he doesn't start. He is a good backup plan if the QB room suddenly becomes sparse for transfers.

It's going to be hard to keep both McCaffrey and Smothers here. Smothers had a big game last night.

That Smothers runs like a brother.

After Martinez leaves, we will see a HUGE offseason battle between Smothers and McCaffery for the next man up. Right now...I’m giving it to Luke McCaffery. Coach V And Frost both have been very high on McCaffery and saying he’s much better then they initially thought he would be. They say he creates things like it’s magic, and that’s with his legs and arm. So as of now, I’m going with Luke McCaffery as our next starting QB. Definitely a great problem to have.

Not to take anything away from Smothers performance that game, because I do think it was impressive. BUT, he was playing against a team that was two divisions lower than his. Muscle Shoals is 6A (second highest division) and Deshler, who they played, is 4A.

I think we have a massive QB battle that off season. Vedral will be a 5th year senior (and 5th year in the system), but I don't think he'll win. Luke will probably be the back up in 2020 and assumed front runner for 2021. Smothers will be in his 2nd year and will get a legit shot. Then I think Frost and Coach V will go out and get a DUDE in the 21 class. If I had to bet, I'd say 4 star Dematrius Davis is who they're after. In the end, I think Luke or Smothers will either transfer or switch positions if they don't win the spot. Regardless, we will continue to have excellent QB play.

I think Vedral will always be a back up barring a transfer or injury. He will never be the long term answer just a plug and play guy for a game or two.
I'm willing to guess vedral knows this too and is cool with it

I don't see him leaving early. Two Heisman trophy's and a national championship later, yes
Yeah I agree, we need to convince him to stay. I think there is a good chance he will stay his senior year, especially if we have a shot at a national title. A lot of our success in the past can be attributed to having guys stay their senior year that could have went pro.

Tell me if I am incorrect, I thought the coaches were impressed with how well McCaffery was learning the O. He hasn't had the opportunity to dodge bullets yet and to compare a kid who has had a spring and part of a fall at camp to one who just played his first game of his senior year is a bit difficult.

Exactly. Something tells me that when Frost and Verdo tell prospective QB recruits that this offense produced a Heisman trophy winner, the highest scoring offense in the nation, and Adrian Martinez's results, I think we'll be OK at QB for the foreseeable future.

Heck, I kinda hope Frost has a string of QB's good enough to leave early.

They probably will list Luke 3rd, behind Vedral this year. If Adrian is out short term, you will probably see Vedral come in. If it is a longer term situation, I think Luke is the real #2. It is possible, he is even better than our first string guy.

Next, I'll read an article about McCaffery as a Heisman candidate this year.
