Oline to start the season

Assume for the moment that Cam's injury (the severity of which remains mysterious) put him on the sideline for at least the beginning of the season. Who are the five guys that run out on the field for the Oline? Have to figure that barring injury, three of them are Wilson, Matt F and Jaimes, with strong probability of Hixson being the fourth. Would think that one of three results are likely:
1. Will F (still a little light) or Miller at Center, with the other four staying in their positions
2. Wilson slides over to Center, with Miller or possibly Raridon at guard
3. Wilson at Center, Matt F slides inside to guard, Gaylord finally gets the call to start at tackle.
Has Bo ever done any work at Center? And how close is Gaylord to the other three upperclassmen in terms of quality?

Not sure. Of all the areas of concern. The O line is the biggest. Which is also why this addition of Rutgers TE is so confusing. Why not try and bring in a transfer with some O line experience, especially center position.

It will be interesting to say the least. Hunter Miller missing spring ball was maybe good for Jurgens but bad for the position.
If he can come back strong my guess is he’d be at Center if Jurgens cant go. I dont see Will Farniok being ready.

Why were some counting on a freshman who has never played a collegiate snap, who was recruited as a TE, and is proving to have a difficult time staying healthy during even off season workouts, let alone a full season of power 5 play to shore up the offensive line.

Surely the staff has a better plan for this position than a converted freshman TE and a JUCO who never came close to setting foot on campus (Bland).

Dude. This tight end is MORE athletic than any tight end on the roster. Good Lord man..... Stop being so obtuse and thinking Nebraska just brought in a charity case.

Secondly, Transfer and Grad Transfer Linemen are a crap shoot. There are no viable options better than what Nebraska has at Tackle and Guard. And there were no legit Big Ten Centers available in the portal.

agreed. just assuming Stoll is a starter-caliber tight end in this offense when he's CLEARLY a plodding block-first type with no ability to stretch the field and who wouldn't start anywhere else in the conference is insane to me. all the other TEs stink, too, if they can't beat him out.

as for o-line, Frost will start the 5 toughest, nastiest dudes we've got. it's June. if Jergens suffered an injury, so be it, he's got plenty of time to get healthy. if not, who cares, next man up

What information do you have to prove he is more athletic? Im assuming you only have access to the same info that the rest of us have seen. I have seen nothing that screams "more athletic than any tight end on the roster"
As I said I don't know what Frost has planned for him. I am going to trust he has a valid reason for bringing him on. In my basic knowledge/observations, opinion it appears our need at this current time would be on the O-line vs TE. Especially since the TE can't play this year anyways.

Don't forget about Hixson at center, I have a feeling you're gonna end up seeing him on Saturdays. My suspicion is that the 5 who start game one won't be the same 5 starting in November if only for health reasons.

Cam's injury woes are rough, how many years in a row has NU been trying to fix up the C position with duct tape and chewing gum? Last really good NU center was what, Dom Raiola?

We'll see what impact Benhart can have at RT. He's a true freshman but he's also really freaking big, he could be somebody who pushes into the rotation by late fall. You'd like to get Farniok inside to be a better G than he is T but you need somebody to do it better out at RT before you can do that.

kid's a matchup nightmare, played the slot in HS. 6'7" redzone target for Martinez.

or, Stoll, at best an outlet receiver who can't get downfield to save his life

Did Stoll bang your wife or something? Good grief nobody's trying to call him Tony Gonzales but he's a perfectly fine TE. Don't look now but Vok's numbers are nearly identical to Stoll's.

I won't disclose premium information. Its a violation from this board. A LOT of high profile programs wanted him, but couldn't make the scholarship numbers work this late in the game.

.........in an offense that's 5x less productive. thanks for proving my point.

last I checked, 'perfectly fine' isn't exactly what we're going for at any position. or perhaps I'm mistaken?

Rutgers total passing yards: 1,586
Nebraska total passing yds: 2,966

So not quite twice as productive but nice try with "5x"

Stoll yds per catch: 11.8
Vok yds per catch: 11.5

Stoll TDs: 3
Vok TDs: 2

Stoll rec: 21
Vok rec: 16

Stats say they're about the same. For funsies if you double Vok's numbers so they're even with NU's almost-double passing yards, he has 2.6 catches per game and 4 TDs for the year. So one more catch per game than Stoll and 0.08 more TDs per game.

that's exactly how extrapolation works considering Rutgers' QB is exactly the same as Martinez and their offense creates the exact same number of opportunities.

folks, we've got a regular math genius in our midst!

The fact the two are even anywhere close is a gigantic indictment of Stoll as a complete afterthought in the offense.

Of course he was only half as product on the ypc stat as was Jerome Washington, the starting Sr TE on Rutgers last season. Who by the way only played in 7 of 12 games.

With Jaimes, Farniok and Wilson...I’m not as worried as some about the oline. Right now we need to basically find a center. We do that, the oline should be fine. Jaimes is as good as any tackle in the BIG and Wilson isn’t far off with the top Guards either. Farniok is no slouch himself. We got talent there...there is some options...maybe young but there’s some options. Austin will have to find a guy or two that’s ready to rock. I remember in the late 90s, early 2000s when the a lot of the NFL teams had centers that where light...like 260-280 light. Will Farniok could do just fine if needed. I believe he was the other guy battling Jurgens for the starting spot.

Research is your friend. 3 of the 4 top receivers were RB, TE and back up TE.

Comparing Stoll to anyone on Rutgers is apples to oranges.

do you not understand that's my entire point?

do you think we'd purposefully neglect the TE if he was a game breaking talent? or do you think, like any rational person with a single iota of football knowledge, teams throw the ball to their best players?

hmmm I wonder if Rutgers just hates the WR position OR maybe those are their best players?

Coach Frost sent a TE to the NFL with 60+ catches at UCF. He utilizes his best players. pretty clear Stoll doesn't fit that description.

research is most definitely my friend. it's proving my point very very clearly, even when it's you who's doing it.

And what is the deal with John Raridon? He was what, a top 100 offensive guard from Iowa. And he’s barely played a down. I know, I know...ratings don’t always mean everything...but he was supposed be as sure fire as we could get of a guard and he’s now a junior.

Stoll was the 3rd leading receiver on Nebraska last year. Is Washington not one of the best players? ozigbo? Williams? Warner?

You are just making assumptions that Rutgers’ TE were dynamic. But the fact is they had below average TE numbers. Their ypc, receptions and total yardage was very pedestrian. That team just sucked all the way around. Their 4 TEs combined for 37 catches and 558 yards and 2 TDs.

Stoll had 21 for 245 and 3 TD by himself.

All I’ll say here is, Frost obviously wanted the TE from Rutgers and so did a number of other D1 programs. Why??? No clue but if Frost wanted him...then I say so be it. Frost knows what he has and doesn’t have. Just trust the man to do what’s best for our team. He obviously feels confident about the oline and RB spot.

So we are still at the point where Frost can’t be questioned? C’mon. So no one else is allowed an opinion because Scott Frost picked up a TE?

I really don’t care that he went with a TE. I just took exception to the fact that some on here want to make this kid the second coming of Gronk and are ready to shove aside Stoll as if he is just a piece of garbage TE.

On this point, no. And why can’t he be?? Because the staff knows what they have and don’t have. Us fans don’t have a clue how practice is going and progress being made. If the man feels good about what he has at RB and the Oline. then there’s probably a reason for it.

it's not my assumption, bub, the proof is in the offers.

and add Warner/Williams to the list next to Stoll of position players who shouldn't get too comfortable getting consistent playing time.

Now I’ll say this...if the season rolls around and our oline is getting torched and our RBs aren’t doing a thing or both...then by all means. That’s when us fans should be questioning his decisions. But for now, we have to assume he’s liking what he has at the oline, at RB position, or ILB or on the Dline and there’s a reason for it. I fully trust Frost, maybe that’s my down fall.

The WR position will be exciting to watch this year. We added what, 3-4 4 star WRs with track speed?? Plus the guys we return?? This could be a very young but explosive unit. I fully see W Robinson being as dangerous for us as Moore was for Purdue. The guys are identical in almost ever way...with Robinson being a notch better his senior year. Get the ball in his hands and give a little room and he’s gone or he will drop the joke down to defenders ankles and fly right on by them. This is going to be fun :)

What offers? Iowa, KSU and Missouri St? And a blueshirt offer at Nebraska? See I can just take what is out there and make the options seem less than they are too.

There is nothing wrong with trusting Frost. Just not blindly. You are assuming that he went with the TE because he was fine with OL and RB. But what if the transfer options at OL and RB just weren’t upgrades to what was here already. There are several reasons as to why he went with TE that don’t include he felt confident with OL and RB.

as much as we hate Iowa, and we hate them a lot, if they're offering a TE it's a big deal. they've had easily the best recent run of TE talent in the conference, and probably the country.

they had more TEs picked in the first round this year than we had total players drafted. if you simultaneously think Stoll isn't garbage and an offer from Iowa for a TE isn't a big deal, then perhaps you don't deserve an opinion.

And none of us have clue why on that and wont know. And I wouldn’t call it blindly trusting him. The mans the Head Coach of our Huskers. He sees first hand everything that’s going on. So yeah, I wouldn’t exactly call that blindly trusting him. I’m just trusting him do what’s needed to be done.

he just said it: the transfer at TE is very very obviously an upgrade over what we currently have.

it's pretty simple guys. good players > bad players. we want the good ones.

if change is going to come, it's going to happen first in the depth chart. and that means some familiar faces aren't going to keep their jobs for long.

Me too. But I can still have an opinion that other positions were of higher priority, in the transfer market, than TE and still trust that he will do what needs to be done.

Right and either Frost didn’t see any upgrades on the oline or at RB so he didn’t go after any transfers there. He either likes what we have now (which is very possible, we have talent on the oline, maybe young but we have options there) or two: he didn’t see any transfers being better then the guys we have now. Thats why I said, I just trust him in making the right calls. That’s all.
