With Barnes turning down UCLA to remain at Tennessee and many top coaching hires off the table, where do they turn?

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin is rumored to be the next guy up. St. Mary’s Randy Bennett is a dark horse name I've seen. Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Texas Tech’s Chris Beard are also available to talk to now. Someone's going to take the crazy money the Bruins are throwing around.

But their AD needs to stop finding new ways to **** the bed. The national media were already calling it the dumbest coaching search [UCLA] could possibly conduct, and that was before Barnes turned them down. It really has been a bizarre and utterly incompetent string of events when you examine the details.

Just one more reason to be thankful we have Moos. Smokin

I wonder how an AD pitches the job to "the next guy up".
After you run through your first few choices, you cannot really be authentic and say you really want the guy when he is your 4th or 5th choice. I guess money would entice. Puts the Callahan hire in perspective.

I thought they got Barnes then I saw this thread and found out he isn’t coming either. I’ve read that UCLA likes to go cheap and think the honor of being the coaching of their legendary program is enough reward. I think they are pretty delusional and if I were Cronin I would think twice before taking the job. If they get Randy Bennett the roster will be filled with Aussie players. Check out his teams at St Mary’s.

I can picture some ******** like this:

"Previously, we were going after the biggest names out there. But what's more important is finding the right fit for UCLA's unique culture..."

But it will probably go more like:

"Here's a huge pile of money. Do you want it? Please take it."

How? With some coach bending them over after he writes his own contract for anything he wants and makes UCLA sign it.

The center of power in college athletics has shifted to the southeast. It’s hard for schools in other areas to compete now, especially teams in the west.

UCLA has sky high expectations. 0 patience and did Steve Alford dirty. He put a lot of great teams together and they cut him loose in the beginning of the season. Moos is right saying that if a job is open more than a week or 2. It starts to look like a job nobody wants. You start to hear about all the challenges and shortcomings. Once you get turned down by 2 or 3 people the job looks unattractive. Why are good coaches saying to a historic program? That sends the message to other coaches they shouldnt want that job either. Thank the Lord for Bill Moos.

More than one team has been waiting for the game to end to go after Beard today. There are much better places to coach than Lubbock

Hmmmm...1 Sweet 16 in like a decade? Is that right? I like him as a coach but don't know if this is a sweet hire.

UCLA fired their last 2 coaches because they weren't satisfied with only making the Sweet 16.

Then they hire a coach who always loses in the 1st or 2nd round.

The school is not as big of a deal to coaches anymore because you can get paid at pretty much any school. So UCLA knocking on your door is only a big deal if it is a huge bump up in pay or if you want a fresh start.

Six-year, $24 million contract. We got a relative bargain with FH.

Still, despite only one Sweet 16 appearance, Cronin has solid credentials. And he's still a young guy (47). I'm sure UCLA fans are underwhelmed, but he's solid if not exciting.

From ESPN:

Cronin heads to Westwood after 13 years at Cincinnati. He has won at least 20 games in each of the past nine seasons and has an 89-18 record over the past three seasons with the Bearcats.

The Cincinnati native is one of six coaches to lead his team to the NCAA tournament in each of the past nine seasons, along with Mark Few, Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski, Bill Self and Roy Williams. Only once did Cronin advance past the first weekend of the tournament (2012).

Before joining Cincinnati, Cronin spent three seasons at Murray State, where he led the Racers to two NCAA tournaments.

I doubt anyone is making a long term coaching decision because Bronny is 4 years away from college.
Not to mention the fact that one and dones will likely be gone by then and kids will be able to go straight to the nba from high school again. Cronin is a petulant ahole and underwhelming coach, I would hate to have to root for him, he makes Bo look agreeable.
