OT: "Momo" Challenge & News

I am posting this right now on this message board, because my son had a nightmare about "momo" a she was a robot that was chasing him around in his dreams. I said "Did you watch a video of it?" He said, "No I saw the picture of it and what it does on channel 7 news."

Thanks a lot "media" my kid is freaking out about a fake challenge on youtube. This is ****ing ridiculous, and I feel bad for him right now. Basically he said don't go to sleep dad I'm scared. Been awake since 1:40AM because the news shared this info and scared the s*** out of him.

I basically have been telling him all night it is a urban legend and not even real. It was created by a "person" and a really dumb person at that. Reinforced that he has so many people that love him, just in case "suicide" was actually in his head. I am beyond frustrated right now!

Agreed. My 8 year old has spent the last week sleeping on the floor in our bedroom because she’s scared that Momo or Slender Man are going to come in and kill her. My wife and I try telling her it’s just a story and not real, but she’s still scared out of her mind. It’s crap being perpetuated by media and social media. Fortunately my wife and I take a hard line on screen time and don’t allow our kids to watch YouTube, so she’s never actually seen Momo, but kids at school talk about this crap.

It’s gotten to the point that her school district send a district wide email saying that they are now considering the Momo Challenge a threat to the safety of kids. When I was a kid stuff like this came and went without incident. Now, with social media, it almost gives life to these urban legends making them much more dangerous.

In fairness to the Channel 7 News, I don't think their target audience is young children. They were showing something to inform parents who might be up at 1:40 in the morning wondering WTF is "momo" and why is my kid so scared of it. As the other poster said, it is social media that is behind the sensationalism of urban legends.

My mother, after watching a news piece on this, was nice enough to call my kids to warn them about the dangers of this thing.

Neither of which had ever heard of it until her call. Now they're both creeped out.

My son was freaked out about it last week, it popped up in a video he was watching. We try to monitor screen time, but not eliminate it. This is the world now and he has to be equipped to deal with it somehow. The best cure for it was all of his buddies at school talking about how they had seen it and saying what a bunch of BS it is. Momo IS kinda freaky looking though!

When i was a kid, this creepy MF was on TV (in the early 90s)... My parents told me to get over it when i got . Your kids will get over it quickly just like every other child that gets scared of something they saw in a movie or on TV.

I get your frustration but when I was kid, not sure how old your kid is, it was Freddy Krueger that kept me up, and Jason Vorhees, and Michael Meyers (The comedian too)...Even just seeing the VCR and Beta covers of those guys scared me, the posters at Blockbuster scared me when I saw those guys.

It was ghosts and monsters that kept me up that I heard about at the bus stop and from friends...

I'm not being a jerk here, but seriously, just turn off the TV when your kids are awake. You'd be amazed at the problems you avoid.

Kids being scared of the dark or something they see on tv is nothing new. Every single one of us went through some form of anxiety/fear while going to bed. It’s pretty amazing what kids can imagine in their head these days.

When I was a kid, this is what scared the hell out of me,


Kids will eventually figure out that it’s not real and nothing like that will ever “get” them.

Never experienced a lot of fear from these things as a kid, but if there was a movie that had me a little nervous to fall asleep it was this one.

Listening to the audiobook right now and loving the hell out of it. Think I'm about to go on a Stephen King tear.

I used to have nightmares about ED209 from Robocop and sometimes dinosaurs from Jurassic Park.

When I was real young it was that my stuffed animals and toys were coming to life and flying around all creepy. I also had this wallpaper with cartoon animals, and they were all fine except the zebras. The goddamned zebras' eyes would follow you wherever you went because of how they were drawn and I had SO MANY nightmares about those zebras.

I for one would like to thank the media for telling us about it. If I hadn't heard about it, I would not have known. I do have to say that I wish they would put on a disclaimer before they broadcast it though.

The concern is not that kids are afraid. That is a concern but not the primary concern. Basically Momo pops up in different videos and tells kids to harm someone, themselves, and at times even tells kids to commit suicide. If they don’t Momo will come and kill them. It’s a scary thing for parents because we understand that it’s not real, but when it’s online enticing kids to violence it becomes much more real than anything we delt with growing up.

No, I get it, I teach for a living so I get it and we have talked about it.

I mean, it is just the new version of the kids at the bus stop and at school that tell fake scary stories to the other kids.

Problem is, it was a hoax. It was told like it was happening, but there were zero actual proven times that it happened.

Just based on how YouTube works, there is really zero chance of it popping up in a normal kids video that wasn’t placed as a hoax.

Honestly, with all the hype and probable fakenews blowing up for a story; does anyone actually have a link to said "horrors"?!

Yeah. Took 5 minutes and tried finding this challenge and nothing but youtube ad cash farmers.

This is complete bull. Fake news.
