Here the ESPN article that prompted the rant:

Tim Miles, Nebraska Cornhuskers (110-108 in seventh season)
What his detractors would say: He has gone from the fun coach who used to tweet at halftime to the coach whose team has experienced high turnover and won more than 20 games only once. Nebraska, which has reached the NCAA tournament only once under Miles, has lost seven in a row. Plus, Nebraska can shred the final year of his deal by paying him a $2.5 million buyout this offseason. The school would owe Miles nearly $4 million total if it made the move after next season.

Why his firing would be unjust: Nebraska has opened a great arena and practice facility within the past five years. The school has invested millions to rebrand itself as a viable basketball program. That's not easy to do for a program that's never won an NCAA tournament game. Firing Miles could erase the momentum the program has built during his time in Lincoln. -- Myron Medcalf

If someone can explain how Miles had anything to do with the new arena and practice facility being built, or the "momentum" for which he is responsible, I'm all ears.

Yeah, we don't want to erase the momentum of a 7-game losing streak.

I didn't realize his buyout is that much lower if we fire him this season, than if we fired him after next season. He's a dead man walking.
Pretty entertaining and very true

Im just happy there's another thread other than Washington. Oh, Miles can eat a bag a dicks. He is more qualified to be a clown at a children's birthday party..

I am not sure how that works. I am guessing he/Moos negotiated a lower buyout for the extension. And he was pretty sure he'd be successful this year and be safe. IF that's the case, nifty move by Moos

I was never a Miles apologist, I just thought the team could have a lot of success this year. I was wrong.

Look brother, i said earlier in the year, this team is not that good. I got bashed big time. Good for Husker standards? Maybe, not of national relevance by any means.

Their argument as to why his firing would be unjust is actually a reason we should fire him. We have opened a state of the art arena and practice facility in 2013 and his team went 19-13 and made the NCAA tourney. Since their magical run, Miles record is 61-77 overall and 33-52 in conference. That's pathetic. That's momentum the wrong way.

Will Moos be allowed to search and hire the next coach? Or will it be a committee, and a search firm ?

Severe said the same thing. The writers are grasping at straws, it's a foregone conclusion in coaching circles that Miles is a dead man walking. He is going to finish with a below .500 record at a power 5 program with top 10 facilities and probably a top 10 arena in the best conference in college basketball that can pay a coach $4 million plus a year. He has been a monumental failure of a hire and I hope he enjoys his next stop in the summit league.

Moos has said before that he has a short list he keeps for football and basketball coaches available when needed. Other sports he gets help from a committee.

Assuming NU finishes this year with a losing record, which is not much of an assumption given recent performance, Miles will have just 2 winning seasons in 7 years at NU. His ratio of winning seasons to total seasons coached is the worst since Jerry Bush was coach in the 50s/60s. For the 2 winning seasons he's had, he returned the core of his team the next year, and proceeded to make them worse, significantly worse. Despite our lack of historical success as a b-ball school, the program is at a new low.

For perspective, Severe has on several occasions called Miles a "horrible person" on the air and has said he doesn't like him and wants him gone. I don't know what happened between Miles and Severe, but the part about being a "horrible person" bothers me because Severe normally seems pretty fair to me.

no kidding. the University, let alone Miles had hardly anything to do with the new arena. It was paid for by the residents of Lincoln(and it's been fantastic).

If anything the University extorts the arena. They are a tenant with cheap rent for a lot of days. Some non UNL bookings are compromised for practice times(despite the brand spanking new practice facility). Additionally, the U during Yori days asked for two different courts - one for men, a different one for women...I forgot which one wanted a bouncier court, and honestly don't know if they ever got the second. It was however a real request the U, or bb programs, made of arena. The product on the court isn't even living up to the cheap rent....men or women teams.

The only thing the University controls is 'in arena marketing during athletic events', and of course the product on the floor. In arena means ribbon board, scorers table, score board. The concourse and other public spaces are not considered 'in arena'.

Monumental failure is a bit much. Dude did take us to the NCAA tournament.

Didn't know that. I have heard rumors of Miles being a scum bag but not from anyone with inside info. Even though Severe may detest Miles at this point it's hard to disagree with him.

I hope he gets fired. He is not a good game coach, and we can do much better. That being said, all of my family members have bumped into him out in public and outside of basketball activities. He talked to everyone of us and was extremely friendly. I hope he does well, bit haven’t heard anything bad about him personally from anyone. So I will definitely give him that.

Something had to have happened for Severe to say that. I know there was a rumor floating around about an affair but I would be surprised if that was what set Severe off. I don't know if it was the locking the players out of the locker room episode or what. Miles is a quirky guy and that was kind of fun for a while. He's gotten rich working for NU and will get a nice parachute if he's let go. Whatever Moos does is fine with me.

As if Moos needed another reason, but yeah, especially after they botched the Riley lump sum deal. Time to save some money on a buyout for once.
