Considering our class this year, I guess the net result of having an "early" signing day is just that the old/late signing day has been moved up. It's really all said and done by the early date now. They could have just moved it up and dropped the late day.

Pretty much, yeah. One benefit I hadn't really calculated is that recruiting "crunch time" comes when the weather in Nebraska is still pretty good. I imagine selling Lincoln to the southern half of the country in January is a bit more challenging.
I was happy that Frost did not feel the need to reach on the last remaining slots. He can now looked to transfers or have some more schollys for 2020. We went after some targets and missed and that is ok. I would rather have an open scholarship for one year, than a player on scholarship for 5 years who does not contribute.
At least how it has played out recently, the huge benefit is that your class doesn't seem to get raided by newly hired coaches in late January or by bigger programs late as much. A newly hired staff at a big programs used to be able to poach in late January, now they can't. Also, it seems like the bigger programs aren't doing late January poaching as much. It is more of a wait to see who signed and who is available game. I really like the new system. I think it benefits Nebraska. And it benefits G5 schools that used to have Bo Pelini go dumpster diving in late January.
The early signing period is a HORRIBLE thing for schools who have to hire a new coach. Formerly they at least had some chance at salvaging a class, now they have virtually no chance. I'm sure glad we've got a guy who will likely be our head coach for the next several decades.
